Purpose for
the guide
First Year
Council
Welcome to the University of South Alabama! We could not be any happier that
you chose to attend school here! We, the First Year Council of 2013-2014, have
created this guide for first year students like you to help ease the transition
from your senior year in high school to freshman year in college so that you are
more comfortable and confident on campus. This guide includes everything from
advice from current students and various maps of campus to different clubs and
organizations on campus. We want your first year to go as smoothly as possible
and we hope this guide helps you with just that.
The purpose of First Year Council is to serve as the sole voice of the freshman body
at the University of South Alabama. Working hand in hand with South’s Student
Government Association, First Year Council will strive to improve the freshman
experience at the University of South Alabama. As First Year Council members
work alongside SGA, they will also gain valuable insight into the executive, legal,
and judicial branches of SGA. Furthermore, the President of First Year Council also
serves as Freshman-at-Large and gets a vote in SGA senate proceedings.

Why we love South
"I like the relatively small class sizes and how the school is expanding and constantly updating things like
residence halls, new rec center, etc." -Kayla W.
"Everyone makes you feel right at home and the amour of school pride
amazes me." -Hannah B.
"My major/classmates" -Emil K.
"The diversity on campus."
-Marques I.
"It's a growing campus with limitless possibility and disc golf."
-Colin Al-Greene
"Location-Beach, lots of outdoor
parks." -William Pearson
"Class size!" -JuWan R.
4
"It's a home away from home!"
-Coleman Wolf
"Everyone, students and staff,
is so welcoming! The campus is
quickly growing and it is great
to be able to experience it first
hand." -Hannah Fabbro
"USA is like home. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, it's hard to feel
out of place, and the spirit is awesome. Professors are exactly as I
hoped they would be, and nothing beats calling myself a Jaguar!"
