11. In the space below, please add any comments related to University facilities.
11.1)
Comments
On the whole my teaching situation at South is more than adequate for my needs.
* Noisy outdoor and/or construction work needs to be more sensitive to ongoing classes and in-office discussions, especially in the
summertime. Staff should not have to go out and tell them; should be the other way around, with some advanced planning/notification (as
with a power outage, a "quietness outage").
* ILB heating/cooling has always been screwy for as long as I can remember. Especially during the transition in seasons, the students are
too cold or too hot in the classrooms.
* Projection in rooms have never been satisfactory; projectors in physics classrooms and room 140 are old and dim, requiring killing all
lights.
* The cleaning staff in ILB are reliable and do excellent work! However, you probably need more staff to keep restrooms clean.
A lot of electricity is wasted keeping HAHN too cold. The automatic handicap front door often does not work.
A/C is erratic and uncontrollable at times
Dust falls out of ventilation, contaminating laboratory samples and live cultures
Constant noise from construction
Fumes from delivery trucks are sucked into the building near the intake and flow through the building (impossible to keep cultures
uncontaminated)
Inadequate hook-ups for chemical work (gas/vacuum)
Water is loaded with particulates/very difficult to do any analytical chemistry
Lighting in room 119 is too dim
Chalkboards only/no whiteboards available
Projector screens cover up chalkboards forcing instructors to chose between either power point or chalkboard (can't do both)
Elevator is unreliable
Windows leak
Constant construction noise (banging, drilling, hammering, etc.)
At times, room temperature was extremely hot for teaching conditions. Other times, the temperature was just fine. But after 6 p.m., there
was no one on campus (or within the Communications building) who could help me out and there was no way for someone like myself (a
part-time instructor) to correct the situation and to address student concerns (because I had no answers...my classroom's temperature
could not be regulated on its own).
Bathrooms in Shelby Hall have no exhaust system. Faculty offices have no sound insulation and, therefore, have very little privacy.
Because of distance issues, students are present at MCI rarely (typically if they are involved in a research activity).
Building is kept too cold. Projectors are quirky and are set up in a place where they project small as a TV screen. "Smartboard" has
NEVER worked to my knowledge . We have to lug laptops to class - classes should already be equipped with computers. Wireless is
slow, Computer services guy way too smug. On occasion he will tell you "things (ie: smartboard on second floor) are working- you're just
doing it wrong" when in fact things are just obviously broken. Otherwise nice guy.
Classrooms don't have overhead projectors
Disability access for toilets--the seats are too low. It is very hard to get up. This requires a trip home to useies. appropriate facility
Disability access in the Humanities building is not great, particularly in the History side; there is only one women's bathroom on second
floor of 3 floor building which can be difficult for students with limited mobility to access. Elevators seem to be better maintained than in
the past, but still have broken down lately, which means students with limited liability do not have access to their classes. Hallways to
offices are narrow and really, offices are too small for a wheelchair to maneuver around.
Lighting from Humanities building to the parking lot needs improvement for security of students, staff and faculty, and lights in the lot need
regular checking (i.e. more than once a year). The plastic toilet seats in the women's bathroom are eroding or degrading on both sides of

the Humanities building and should be replaced.
The administration took down our chalkboards and replaced with dry erase boards. Why? The function remains the same---just more
markers for the landfill and harder to clean boards. Better to have kept chalk board and added smart boards so we could at least use both
technologies.
The staff does a great job keeping Humanities Building clean and tidy.
Facilities are very adequate for what I need to do.
Floor tiles are buckling in front and back access areas creating hazards and poor appearance.
For as many students that take classes I. HUMB, we. Ertainly deserve a new building. We touch ever student that comes to the university,
surely this warrants a more modern and up to date a better accessible space?
For one of the departments on campus with one of the highest enrollments, I've always wondered why we (biology) has the most
antiquated rooms and facilities. The Life Sciences lecture hall and classrooms are stuck in 1965. Broken desks in life sciences lecture
hall and chalk boards in most if not all of the classrooms. We don't even rate dry erase boards or better yet interactive boards, such as
Smartboards.
For whatever reason, the library is exempt from following the academic calendar and that has caused a problem for me twice this
semester. The started spring break the Sunday before it started and were closed. My students needed to meet in the library to work on a
project. They also opted to close on Easter Sunday, yet the university does not recognize Easter as a holiday. In addition, security is a
huge concern after discovering the university does not conduct background checks on students. I had a registered sex offender in my
course in the fall, which I discovered after being detained for over 30 minutes the first night of class. I was alone with him on the 2nd floor
of an empty building. I had a bad feeling after that conversation and did some research myself that resulted in the discovery he had just
got out of prison after serving 15 years and he lied on his application. I was told the university doesn't conduct background checks due to
the expense. In my opinion, every new applicant should be charged a fee to cover a background check. The application should state they
are paying for that, which in itself would deter students with serious criminal backgrounds from applying. If any student is out for more than
one semester, they should have to pay for another background check to insure they were not in trouble while not going to school. I no
longer feel safe teaching on campus especially due to USA's current standing on the most dangerous university campus list. More
proactive security measures need to be taken.
Great place to work!
HPE Building is least updated facility on campus and it is extremely difficult to provide instruction to students. Poor facility flow patterns,
limited classroom space and ancillary areas, and accessibility issues preventing both traditional students and disabled students from using
building for learning purposes exists. Building limitations present many challenges to teach, advise, and conduct research.
HVAC system is horrid. Many rooms are either freezers or ovens - and it varies which rooms fall into which categories on which day.
Thermostat in office doesn't control temp. Temp varies drastically from day to day.
Humanities North is always cold
I actually enjoy this old building and feel sad that we will be moving out in a couple of years. My office is large and I have my own
bathroom. I have plenty of storage space and it is quiet. Having our clinic downstairs and faculty offices upstairs is a bit awkward but it
has been managable. We are in serious need of newer computers and office furniture.
I am a professor, but I share an office with a number of graduate students. It is cluttered, unprofessional-looking, and out-of-the way. I
avoid meeting with students there whenever possible.
We have had no safety drills. I had very brief instruction on where the exits were, and that's about the extent of my training on how to
protect my students in the event of a tornado or a shooter on campus.
I am teaching online communication courses from the state of Washington. The Sakai help team has been wonderful. It has been a real
privilege to be a part of this important teaching environment. And, it has been a great learning experience for me! Jeanne S McPherson,
PhD
I am very proud of our campus facilities and grounds.
I appreciate this survey and hope the results can be used to make improvements across campus. I have taught in many buildings on
campus over the last couple of years, ranging from MCOB to Humanities, to Chemistry. Humanities is much improved, Chemistry could
use some work. MCOB could use some work as well.
I can feel air through the window in SHEC 2015 when the wind blows.
I do not have an office and studio space in the same building as my other tenure track or tenured peers have and I feel at a disadvantage
It is difficult to do my research as there is no space to work on an ongoing project in the building- currently I have to carry a project that is
made of sometimes a hundred pieces or more back and forth from the sculpture lab- which always dislodges the pieces
I have never had the ability to work on research during time when other classes are going on as there is just no space in which to move
Miss Phyllis who cleans our building does an excellent job- she is very thorough, pleasant, and takes pride in her work
The hot shop machinery we have is working well now and our studio is very good for hot glass work
We have little studio space for students, and very little space for students doing their thesis work or directed studies unlike many art

schools I was asked to clear out from my original studio table in the corner to make space for students
I don't believe the Medical Sciences Building would pass an ADA audit. Many of the last modifications for technology were made with no
input from anyone with regard to ADA requirements.
I have experienced a lot of difficulty working the projections system and particularly linking with the audio system. As I teach in the evening
there is no IT/technical support available: they have been are very helpful when I have gone to the classroom early to meet them but some
of the difficulties persisted over the semester.
I have nothing positive to say about Humanities Building, except that the staff people do the best they can with such a terrible building,
terrible in every way! Please spend money on Humanities Building!
I have placed 8 maintenance requests over the last two years because water leaks into my office whenever it rains. Our secretary and the
janitors have placed many requests as well. I still have a leak. The only "solution" has been to tape garbage bags over my bookshelves to
deflect the water to the floor. There are rusty water marks on my door, walls and floor as a result of this leak and disgusting rusty water
drips on me when I enter or exit my office. Life sciences is currently being renovated but the building still leaks when it rains. What is the
point of spending all this money on renovations without first addressing the leaks? We spend so much money on landscaping campus but
cannot keep rain out of the life sciences building?
It's embarrassing to have colleagues or external candidates visit my office.
Other issues-The fact that the hating and cooling system keeps breaking down is inconvenient and not good for some of my experiments or equipment.
The fact that the building doors are never seem to be locked anymore is a safety/security issue.
In general the life sciences building no longer meets the needs of my department. The fact that there are no safety showers is a problem.
In many labs the eye wash station is inconveniently located in the middle of a bench that many students would have to climb up onto to
reach. Furthermore, there does not seem to be any periodic inspection of the eye washes.
I marked great dissatisfaction with the white boards and smartboads simply because there are too many of them. The smartboards are all
horrible in terms of projecting materials, and the whiteboards are universally deplored by teachers. Admin stupidly put these in without
adequately consulting with teachers. There are no markers, and when we go to the dean's office in HUMB, we are reprimanded for using
too many, and heaven forbid you should ask for something other than black ink. I just don't give my students the info any more and hope
they take notes.
I rated lighting low because the fluorescent lights in our building (I assume they are the same University-wide) give me headaches and
students have noted the same. I use my own lamps in my office, but the overhead lights in the classrooms do give me the headaches after
a while.
I rated temperature low because it always seems to be freezing cold in our building regardless of outside weather.
I taught in the computer lab on the first floor. The temperature is almost unbearably hot.
I teach TBL in room 160 (the Team Based Learning room) which contains excellent equipment which enhances learning through
interaction, information access and exchange. The only problem with room 160 that I have noticed is the temperature; the room is
uncomfortably cold for students and for me. Other classrooms in the communication building (formerly EGCB) need newer computers and
sound systems. Desks are uncomfortable and large, bulky, and heavy. Desks hinder student mobility and interaction with me and with each
other. The building is convenient and clean. I and students suggest better signage outside so that students and visitors can easily identify
buildings .
I teach a night class. When class is over and I have securied the building, there is no one in the parking lot of the Commons building. It
would be nice to see a USA police care in the Commons Parking lot from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
I teach in a room which has had mole spores and after years of requests still has the ceiling tiles with mold mildew damage in the ceiling.
NO handicapped access and I have had several student complaints about this situation. I am teaching in a old storage space with the
original carpet from the 60's and because it is upstairs they rarely vacuum. I bring the trash cans down the stairs or they don't get emptied.
Yes all this has been reported for the last 10 years and the nothing has been done except for garbage cans to catch the water when it
leaked last year.
The noise factor is the band and activities that go on in the gym.
I think that our facilities department does an excellent job maintaining our buildings.
I wish MCI has a good class room
I would like my office to be cleaned periodically. I think that during this academic year the floor of my office has been cleaned only one
time. I had to personally request some staff in charge of the cleaning to clean my office.
I would venture that most USA students take most of their Gen Ed courses in HUMB. Thus it is the academic building that they encounter
first at South. It also contains the core of the University - A&S - the largest college by # of faculty, # of majors, % of teaching, etc. Yet is is
also the ugliest and least comfortable and least friendly building on campus. It is TIME TO REPLACE IT! The current situation not only
makes South that much less appealing to students in those first two years who might be thinking about finishing up somewhere else, but
also sends a very clear signal about what the University deems to be important academically (nice buildings for the professional schools)
and not (crap for the liberal arts and sciences - i.e the things that make civilization work). I understand that a new science building has to
be a priority right now, but we need a new HUMB in the next decade, at the very latest.
I'd love to be able to actually open the windows in my office or in the classrooms.

I'm lucky to be in one of the new buildings!
In UCOM 2000, we have multiple roof leaks- everytime it rains we have to place buckets in work and therapy rooms. Lots of water damage
present on the ceiling.
In both the Mitchell center classrooms, and in other classes that I've taught in, I find computers to be dated with ports that are not always
easy to access. They are not always configured for latest physical or digital media playback whether that be DVD, mp4, Blu Ray, or USB 3.
Speaker or sound control are not always obvious. Wireless remotes would be a plus for PowerPont and other similar presentation/
playback.
Standard hard seats for students are not the most comfortable, especially over long periods. They don't conform to my posterior!
In general, the Humanities building is in bad shape. Black gunk falls out of the air vents, there is no heat in the winter and too much AC in
the summer. My eyes burn after being in the building too long--the air quality cannot be good.
Interesting survey. This is the first time I have ever been surveyed for my opinions about the university facilities.
It is absurd that the side of the Humanities building where I teach and work has one women's restroom with four stalls for the entire
building. It is not enough.
Lack of reliable heating/cooling is a serious concern/problem for biology, as we have to regulate temperature for live organisms, and for
our everyday lab work/chemical reaction conditions.
Door hinge/regulator is broken, allowing outer/building door to SLAM shut just outside of Marine Science office (it has also cracked the
glass above it).
Let's be honest, the Humanities Building needs to be plowed under and start anew. The cosmetic face-lift it received a few years ago
helped in terms of cleaning-up the space, but it is a dump overall. The housekeeping crew has been a much better job in the last few
years-- kudos-- but honestly, I looked at the same hairballs and dusts in the return vents in the stairwells for the last decade. They seemed
to have been cleaned out recently. I hear of my colleagues who have "black junk" falling out of their air vents. And mysteriously the mold
disappeared with the face lift but is the root of the problem solved? The most heavily used building on campus and one that generates the
most revenue for the university, yet it is the worst in terms of facilities along with Life Sciences. Students and faculty in this building
deserve better. Unfortunately we don't have big money like Allied Health or Shelby that is required to get a new building; however, if the
university wants to grow in enrollment as it says it does, then we will have to get a new building. We are busting at the seams in
Humanities. Most importantly, myself and colleagues worry about the air we breathe in the building given the particles falling out of the
vents in classrooms and offices. We don't want a situation 20 years down the road because of breathing compromised air. Unfortunately, I
know of a lot of colleagues who limit their time in the office because of what they believe to be bad air quality. In the end, it hurts students
and departments. We need a safe non-toxic environment.
Life Science Building is an embarrassment.
Lighting in all rooms and offices in LSB needs to be updated. It is not bright enough and in the classrooms there is no option to turn off the
lights at the front of the room while leaving the back lights over the students turned on. This makes it almost impossible for students to take
notes.
The ventilation system works ,but it is ALWAYS on, there is no "off" option. It is either A/C or heat. Many times it just needs to be off. Then
the blower is at the front of the room so I cannot hear the students questions because the blower is ALWAYS on. We have no whiteboards
(I don't even know what that is referring to) or "clickers" (again, no idea what that is).
Most University facilities do not receive the upgrades that are needed for a student population our size. While there are improvements,
many seem to be the minimum and are often not done with Sustainability in mind (short of the Dining Hall and limited others).
Much of the space in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center is shared. More faculty offices/teaching space, ensemble rehearsal space,
performance space, and practice rooms are desperately needed.
My classroom is always cold. Desks are very crowded, making it difficult to get to the middle of the rows and makes it very easy to see the
person's work who is next to you. I have to make two different versions of the test in order to make it more difficult to cheat. There are
broken desk tops, if everyone attends, some students sit where there is no desk top. Larger students have a problem fitting in the seats.
My office has often been as low as 61.5 degrees. When requested facilities personnel have adjusted it. Thanks!
My office is in the ground floor of the Humanities Building. The temperature is unbearable all year. It is extremely cold. I've had to meet
students outside or off campus due to the unbearable coldness. Very dofficult to funtion ir even think clearly within this type of
enviornment.
My office is too warm, winter and summer, and gets very little air. It's ridiculous since it is a new building...
Our classrooms are too small for our students and their equipment, and we have no way to change configurations. Students sit on top of
one another, and there is no room for their books, computers or notes. Test taking is very difficult, as students can not protect their work
from others' eyes. And I've never heard a good reason why there are no clocks in any of the classrooms.
My office rug has not been cleaned in over 10 years and it is almost always like an oven.

Office space for part-time English faculty completely inadequate. Part-timers allocated 6-8 persons per tiny, disused spaces w/out
individual desks, bookshelves, computers, phones.
Our roof leaks, kind of a lot.
Outdoor areas around visual arts very dark at night, even though there are still classes in the evening. Would feel more safe with better
lighting. Also the work tables in the drawing room are not conducive to easily arranging the room for different projects and tend not to work
properly. They are very loud, bulky, and often unbalanced.
Overall the facilities at this University are adequate. Our program would have difficulty increasing class size due to the lack of adequate
and available space. We are at capacity now for our classroom size.
Please note that the Life Sciences lecture hall (the large one) really must be updated. I had problems this semester with the main lights
and with the computers for the projector. Sometimes they simply did not work! This is a huge problem since I teach in the evenings when
no support is available. Thank you.
Please replace moldy ceiling tiles. Requests were put in months ago and nothing was ever done.
Projectors in the classrooms project on to whiteboards that are not designed for this purpose. As a result, the projector bulbs reflect off of
the board in a glare into the students' eyes. On the occasion that I am sitting at the student tables (e.g. during student presentations), is
very annoying and distracting. It results in seeing spots when you look away. I feel bad for the students who have to endure this in every
class.
An additional problem that results from projecting on to the whiteboard is that the whiteboard is then not available for other uses. As an
engineering instructor, I often solve long problems in class, requiring the entire space of the board. Having to share this space for
projection is a detriment to my teaching.
Repairs to Terrazzo floors in ILB could and should be done throughout the building. Flooring in bathrooms attracts dirt. It should be deeply
steamed and sealed. Hallways are conduits for sounds that distract students and faculty. The building is inadequately marked by signs on
campus.
Rooms are frequently oppressively hot, even when exterior temperatures are comfortable or cold. In-room thermostats controls do not
seem to impact room temperature.
Several things can be improved on:
1. Availability of clickers in lecture rooms and corresponding softwares on faculty members' computers. Having the softwares (eg turning
point) on our work computer makes it convenient for faculty members to make the lectures more interactive for students and residents.
2. Availability of smartboards, projectors to which we can easily hook up our laptops
Shelby Hall houses College of Engineering and School of Computing with a fairly large number of faculty members. There is NO faculty
director telling students where to find a particular faculty member. VERY occasionally the monitors flash the faculty office assignments
across the screen but this is totally inadequate. I have visited many universities and have always seen faculty directors at the main
entrances, why not in Shelby Hall?
Since we, USA, want to encourage Team Based Learning (TBL) in the classroom; I hope there are plans to remodel more classrooms that
are conducive to TBL Trying to utilize TBL pedagogy in auditorium seating presents many issues.
Some of the rooms in the Communication Building are unbearably hot pretty much at all times. It bothers both the instructors and the
students and detracts from the educational goals and efficacy.
Students in wheelchairs have a hard time making the corner from the main office down the little office hallway to my office (HUMB 330).
I'm not sure what can be done. The last time I had a student in a wheelchair, I met with her regularly in the classroom or in the language
lab.
TERRIBLE in almost every way. Most high school science labs are superior.
Tanya does an exceptional job keeping LPAC clean! My office and classroom are always clean - you can count on Tanya!
Temperature adjustment has been an ongoing challenge for years.
Temperature control in both Alpha Hall East and North are poor, especially in North.
Temperature regulation, or the lack thereof, in MSB has frequently been commented upon. We have frequently been told that there is
nothing definitive that can be done. So in the winter every office is running a space heater and every summer the fans are turned on.
There must be tremendous increases in electricity consumption in the middle of winter and summer. I find this situation to be intolerable.
We have complained and complained. I guess that we realize that our complaints are not heard or at least ignored. Some of the
overhead from grants should be given back to the investigator because the institution is abdicating its responsibility to provide an
environment suitable for study and research. OSHA would probably be appalled. Build us another building with proper temperature
regulation and tear this one down!! If you are really interested in learning about this issue, come to MSB and interview those people who
work here. Surveys are unable to give you the appropriate "flavor".

The Baldwin Country Classroom setting and overall environment is well-managed and maintained. The facilities would not however be
what they are without the staff that supports the surroundings. The security guard, Ralph McDonald is excellent. Always present, always
available, courteous, professional, efficient, positive, and always willing to adjust to the needs of faculty and students. I also find other staff
(i.e. Dr. Cindy Wilson, Angela Rand, Kathy Ferniany, Carol Frush, among others) similar in their professional, positive, and helpful
approach in creating a healthy and enjoyable academic environment for the students and other staff.
The Health Sciences building is beautiful and well kept. We do apparently have a limited number of office spaces for full time faculty. I
share an office which is fine with me. My seating/desk area is a little tight. I can easily live with this, since I do not have to use my office
often. So please understand that I am not complaining. But since the survey is about facilities, I am letting you know.
The Humanities Building is an embarrassment to our university. The majority of USA students spend their first 1-2 years in this building,
yet it is completely unwelcoming and does not serve to attract or retain students, particularly in Humanities-related fields. My students
describe my office as looking like a room in a homeless shelter, and I can hardly blame their assessment. My classrooms consistently
have technological and maintenance problems that prevent me from teaching more effectively. How can these students have respect for
their professors, their classes, and these departments in such a space? How can the university expect to attract and retain faculty in such
an environment?
Additionally - I have heard from multiple Humanities students that they envy other buildings for their welcoming, comfortable study spaces.
The Humanities building needs a space where students can study, work, or relax between classes.
Finally - my students consistently complain about the amount of smoking that goes on in the courtyard between the Humanities buildings.
There is no enforcement of the rules regarding how far away from the doors one must be to smoke. This makes for an unfriendly
environment to our non-smoking students that encourages them to spend time away from the Humanities Building.
Thanks for your time.
The Humanities Building serves all students on campus, but it is deplorable, particularly regarding space, collaborative learning, and
atmosphere. The lack of technology is disgraceful.
The Humanities Buildings are extremely lacking in technology. A new computer that is easily accessible in each room with an easy-to-work
projector would be great. Many of the rooms don't even have a computer and require you to hook up your own laptop which is absolutely
terrible. I don't want my students seeing my personal laptop screen every time I want to show them something on the computer. And, half
the time the personal laptop hook-up doesn't even work. It messes up my screen and is difficult to manage, which takes time to fix out of
class time. Surely USA can provide a computer in every room?
The Life Sciences Bldg is a campus eyesore. As a prospective student, I would walk in and walk right back out again! The faculty do a
wonderful job of cobbling equipment and supplies together, but a Research I facility?! Not a chance. I graduated from a PUBLIC high
school in the Northeast with better equipment and technology... the status of this building is embarrassing.
The Life Sciences Building is a disgrace. Where to even start? Bathrooms are circa 1960. Poor over sink lighting is a waste of energy and
there have been repairs made to floors using miss-matched tiles. Several water fountains were removed and never replaced. The others
don't work well. I wish we had white boards in our classroom. We still have chalkboards and dust covers EVERYTHING. Students and
faculty alike agree; Life Sciences is the worst building on campus. We have begun to ask ourselves, "what have we done to piss off Admin
because we are definitely being ignored". Heating and cooling is always screwed up in our building (across campus really), internet access
has low reception points (but overall is mostly OK), and there are water leaks in several rooms (check with Biology for locations). Many of
the chairs in our classrooms are broken (cracked backs), and lighting sucks. we NEED SPOT LIGHTS to highlight lecturers in LSCB 119
that are on a separate circuit so that we can turn them off when we go Powerpoint. In fact, we need separate lighting circuits for ALL
lighting in our classrooms.
The Life Sciences Building needs to be updated in terms of laboratory and classroom needs both for technology-based access and for
facilitation of Team-Based Learning and collaborative learning activities. In addition, the ability to control room temperature and lighting for
labs is basically nonexistent. The laboratory facilities need to be updated in terms of lab safety (safety showers, hood, etc) and computers
need to be updated and maintained.
The acoustics in the Health Sciences bldg is terrible, and there is not enough adequate lounge space for students. They are forced to sit or
stand around in the hallway. One teacher can hear another teacher next door.
The bathroom in Alpha hall east downstairs is very hot. The building does not have any doors that are easy to use by the disables person.
There are no automatic buttons to open the door. The ramp is very steep.
The building is old and ugly and badly needs renovation. Office spaces and some of the classrooms look really horrible, especially on the
4th floor--lots of old cheap flimsy wood paneling. The elevator keeps breaking. My office is very cold in the winter unless I keep my door
open, which creates a major noise problem since I'm across the hall from the copier.
The business building air conditioning and heating system never seems to work well. It is either too cold or too hot to work there. It works
well for a few days and then it's back to either the Tundra or Sahara.
The carpet needs to be replaced throughout the university commons. I think replacing it with something other than carpet would be a smart
move to improve the appearance of the College of Education more often.
The chairs in UCOM have been there since it was occupied by the COE - 1994? They are OLD and hard and desperately need to be
updated. There is no padding and they are VERY uncomfortable.
The heat/AC system is never working correctly. People have heaters in their offices in the SUMMER. This is ridiculous and totally energy
07/16/2014
Class Climate evaluation
Page 14
USA Faculty Facilities Survey
inefficient. Someone need to do an audit and figure out the problem.
There are HUNDREDS of old computers in the attic area in COE. They need to be recycled. Surely the univ has a contract with someone
to do this.
Parking is great - we love it.
The chalkboards need to be replaced in the Mitchell College of Business and replaced with whiteboards or interactive whiteboards. Some
of the chalk boards are in such poor condition that you can hardly write on them. Also, many of the computers are extremely slow.
The classrooms have been constructed with poor quality sound proofing. Noise from adjoining classrooms often interferes with my
classes.
Each classroom should have two doors - front and back. HAHN classrooms have only one door, which is the front door. Students who
come late to class cause a disruption with their entries. I lock the classroom door immediately before my class begins to prevent these
distractions.
The cleaning staff does their best. They are way understaffed. My negativity has mostly to do with the building itself. The Humanities
Building probably needs to be replaced altogether.
The cleaning staff in our building does an excellent job in both cleaning and being cordial and polite in their interactions for faculty,
students, and visitors. Barbara is great!
The computers in CMC and midtown are slow and as a consequence its decreases efficacy
The drinking water quality in the water fountains is not good. Apparently they were never tested for safety and I do not drink this water.
The environment in which I teach is pleasant and the cleaning crew does an excellent job.
The temperature however is extremely uncomfortable. It is difficult to understand why the
A/C is at full blast in the winter! (The temperature drops dramatically in the evening and it
must be very challenging for my students to concentrate!!)
The facilities all need a face lift. What our facilities look like do not reflect the quality of care and services we provide.
The facility is infested with rats and roaches.
The grounds around our building are very poorly kept up. The campus is difficult to walk around. There needs to be signs on all campus
buildings and "you are here signs" near every parking lot.
The heat/air system does not function correctly. Most of our rooms (classrooms and offices) are too cold year round due to the main
building settings.
Additionally, the ventilation of several offices is a problem when the grass is cut. I do not have to hear or see that the lawn is being cut
because I smell it and my allergies are triggered.
We definitely still need the acoustics dampened between rooms. Voices can clearly be heard between offices, conference room and
classrooms. The spaces are small and being used efficiently but no real room to expand.
The lack of adequate temperature control in our offices and laboratories is a disgrace. We have to wear coats to work in the middle of
summer because the heat control is dreadful. We are nowhere near OSHA standards for workplace temperature. The faculty are just tired
of complaining because nothing ever happens. On the contrary, having the safety officers come through our building and site us for having
heaters in offices when the ambient air temperature in the workplace is 50 degrees is just downright insulting! I have often considered
suing the university but it would cost me too much money and I doubt that it would change anything. How dare you treat the faculty and
students so badly and with such indifference.
The landscaping around the Life Sciences building is non-existent. We have weeds - not grass. Mildew is growing along the stairways. We
need landscaping! Given how many faculty, students, and staff use the building, the appearance is dismal. Looking forward to the
renovations occurring on the inside of the building, but the outside needs to be upgraded.
The lecture has no suitable white board or chalkboard. I am forced to teach by power point. You can only see or har well in certain areas
of the lecture hall. Th rest of the building, including labs have no ceiling, NLT exposed pipes, so the acoustics are very bad. The lighting is
not good anywhere However, the bathrooms are always clean, and the projectors are nice. I would love to have moveable white or chalk
boards and a smart board would be a plus.
The main issue in Humanities is of course the heating/air-conditioning system. Faculty, staff, and generations of students have complained
about it during the last years, but this winter it was the worst.
I would also like to have the carpet in the office areas cleaned, at least once a year.
Another issue we have in this building on the third floor is the cleaning supplies storage: it is inadequate, because exposed all the time.
The supply cart is huge and it just sits next to the windows and staircase. It is not the first thing we need to see when entering the hallway.
The noise level in our classrooms, labs and my office is very bad. There is practically no sound proofing material in the walls. The noises
from the hallway is very hard on the students during their tests.
The restrooms in LSCB need to be steam cleaned or something. The floor tiles and "baseboards" are disgusting. Paint is peeling off the
stalls. This is years of ground in grime, not the fault of our custodial workers who are very conscientious.

The restrooms in the Life Sciences Bldg are exceptionally clean, but the floors need to be mopped more often. Due to the current
renovations, the facility has become extremely dusty and the indoor air quality has rapidly declined. Perhaps the air ducts could be
cleaned or replaced. In addition, it appears that the facility would be difficult to navigate for someone with a physical disability (wheelchair,
scooter, crutches and etc.).
The sharing of space with Athletics and the Marching Band has created issues. Our classes have, at times, had to work around athletics
and mostly, the band, for space. It has gotten better, but we need designated spaces for our activity classes and activity labs for methods
classes without having to schedule around the band or athletics.
The televideo system between USA Campus and DISL need to be better monitored. Prior to class a tech support person from DISL should
ensure the equipment is working, and one at USA should do the same.
The temperature of my office is unbearable most days. I think our hallways, in our part of ucomm are way too small.
The temperature settings in UCOM are such that if one room is comfortable others controlled by the same temperature setting are not.
Makes it difficult for all to be comfortable
The ventilation in Mastin can be quite poor. Given the building is a place for students and patients the are mornings were the odor in the
building can be quite repulsive. It is usually worse on the lower levels. I do not know if the roof has a been updated, but in the past when
ever there was heavy rain it was guaranteed to leak in some of the offices. A partner of mine lost his office computer and desk items
during one storm. On the second floor the classrooms are very variable. The lecture hall (218) has a projector, iClicker station but several
of the other rooms do not have computers or projectors. The later rooms still have traditional chalk boards in them. A lot of departments
compete for the one lecture hall with the equipment.
The wall to my office is shared with a classroom and it is very loud. I can hear the entire lecture and it can be disruptive for my work.
The waste of energy is appalling. The lights don't turn off and the air conditioning runs full blast whether it is summer or winter and is
always uncomfortably too cold.
The water that comes out of the tap tastes and smells terrible, especially on Monday morning after not being run all weekend. I hate to
think what chemicals are in the water. It would have been nice to have a filter on the tap to reduce this problem.
The white boards in the classrooms are frequently left uncleaned and messy. I have often gone into the bathroom stalls to find no paper.
The shredder is never emptied.
There also is an issue with security. There has been a continuous issue with the campus police not unlocking the humanities building on
time. The cleaning lady has reported this issue more than once to no avail. The day after the rape on campus (where I park), there was no
security and the humanities building was still locked at 7:20. Another female instructor was standing outside waiting for someone to come
unlock the door. We were fortunate that an administrative person came with a key.
There always seem to never be any hand towels in the restroom to dry your hands.
There is a few major issued with the sculpture/3D room. When we have a large amount of rain the room floods with at least an inch or two
of water throughout the entire room. The problem has been addressed but obviously not in an adequate manor since the room flooded
twice last week. It is hard for students to get any work done because we had to spend so much time cleaning and removing water.
My other issue is with the same room. There is not propper ventilation in the wood working or plaster mixing areas. When using the
sanders the room fills with fine sawdust and student complain about the air quality. I have them wear masks and goggles but even the
students not using the tools have to wear them to breathe and work.
There is not good handicap access, especially in bad weather. It is not clear whether our interior offices are cleaned, but they need to be
once or twice a semester.
There need to be male and female restrooms on every wing of every floor. Otherwise disability access is very poor.
The whiteboards accomplish nothing and are harder to use than the old chalkboards.
Wireless in the classrooms is disruptive as it allows students to surf the web -- a particular problem in survey courses. Anything a faculty
member wants students to view on the web is available through the wired connection to the podium computer, projection and sound
equipment.
They do a great job. When we need something repaired/pictures hung, is there a specific way we need to contact them (request form/
phone number, etc....)?
They keep the building too cold. It is a freezer and is very uncomfortable as regards to temperature.
This building is too old to function properly. A lot of people have raised frustration in the past and the school failed to improve the situation
here. Temperature could be sweating hot or shivering cold depending on whether the heating/cooling system behave that day. It's
incredible no one can fix the temperature issue. Another major problem is the condensation from the ceiling. We have expensive
laboratory equipment that may suffer from water condensation from the ceiling. Not being able to properly control the temperature in this
building is unbelievable and unacceptable.
Too often the handicap access main entrance doors don't work from the push button. And grad students are supposed to have after hours
and weekend entrance with their ID card. But the reader does not work!

UCOM is what it is, a refurbished big box dept. store in a strip mall separated from campus with a huge blacktop parking lot and no
windows.
USA Baldwin County should be updated with newer/nicer tables, chairs and classroom furniture like the rest of the classrooms on the main
campus.
Very satisfied with the space. Very nice floors for the activity. However, the ceiling is in need of repair, and the roof leaks.
Water in HAHN is not drinkable. We all bring bottled water rather than drink from the water fountain. The water is most often yellow and
murky.
We have no emergency plan if an episode of violence were to occur while on campus (e.g. mass shooting). All of the windows in new
buildings on campus do not open so students would be trapped in classrooms and faculty trapped in their office. We need some sort of
guidance on this.
Faculty furniture is leftovers from previous employees. The desk chairs are extremely uncomfortable and should be replaced.
We are out of space. The grounds are rediculios. When will WE move to the top of the list?
We are pleased to be getting new carpeting in UCOM. The ventilation system is clearly faulty and many folks in the department have
problems with the mold and dirt.
We could use more classroom space for the various Departments in the Humanities Building. Scheduling is sometimes difficult. Also, the
desks in HUMB 112 and 114 are very large, making it difficult for students to walk between them to their seats. They are exceedingly
difficult to rearrange in circles or in a semi-circle for student-student and teacher-student group interactions.
We desperately need new computers, printers, chairs and classroom furnishings (to allow collaboration and interaction) in the
Communication Department. I realize the continued budget cuts from the state are having an ongoing, negative effect. I believe the U.S.
A. Foundation should be approached for more funding (in addition to what they already give the university).
We need access to ice in HUMB.
"Elevator" in HUMB north is ridiculous. Lawsuit waiting to happen. I'm amazed we haven't been sued already. Stairwells that are used are
too narrow with the newly installed handrails---they allow for one way traffic only now?!?! And with elevator constantly not working, this is
a major issue.
3rd floor ladies' room needs to be open at 8am!!! ALWAYS closed for cleaning at 7:50-8am
Office carpet in FLL department is disgusting!!! My office, & offices of colleagues too, drops little black "gifts" from the air vent. Offices are
NOT private---even with doors closed, you can hear conversations.
We need better Wi-Fi access, especially in Collaboratory.
Computer Labs have fixed tables. Need to be able to move them.
Wi-fi is a significant problem in the auditorium size larger classrooms. This make use of iClicker difficult at best.
Yes - the sidewalk from the Student Rec Ctr that heads west along Old Shell Rd ends at the light. This sidewalk needs to be extended to
the intramural fields so that runners/walkers have a safe path.

rated projections in classrooms satisfactory with the EXCEPTION of the multimedia rooms. It is still very difficult to project due to the
lighting and the fact that the wrong projectors have been placed in there. We have complained multiple times but they have not been
replaced.
