SELECTION: The recipients will be selected by the Curriculum and Instruction Department Scholarship Committee with its recommendations provided to the Chairperson of the Department. Recipients will be announced in the spring and awarded at the WIU Foundation Scholars' Recognition Ceremony in the fall. AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS AND CRITERIA: Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for African Americans (for currently enrolled & transfer students) − African American Student − Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU. − Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to the fall award. − Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Elementary Education (for currently enrolled & transfer students) − Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU. − Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to the fall award. − Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Mercer County High School Student (for currently enrolled & transfer students) − Graduate of Mercer County (Illinois) High School. − Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU. − Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to the fall award. − Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0. Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Rock Island County High School Student (for currently enrolled & transfer students) − Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU. − Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to the fall award. − Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 (includes transfer GPA for new transfers). − First preference given to a graduate of Rock Island Illinois High School. − Second preference given to a high school graduate from a county surrounding Rock Island High School. Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Sherrard Students (for currently enrolled & transfer students) − First preference to an African American student attending WIU with a 3.0 GPA or better with junior class status majoring in Special Education or Elementary Education who graduated from Sherrard High School, − Second preference to any minority student attending WIU with junior class status majoring in Elementary Education or Special Education with a 3.0 GPA or better (includes transfer GPA for new transfers) who graduated from Sherrard High School. − Third preference to any student attending WIU with junior class status majoring in Elementary Education or Special Education with a 3.0 GPA or better from Sherrard High School. − Fourth preference to any student attending WIU with junior class status majoring in Elementary Education or Special Education with a 3.0 GPA or better from a county surrounding Sherrard High School. John B. Beaver Scholarship(currently enrolled and transfer students) − Junior Status − Majoring in Elementary Education or Early childhood education − Minimum 3.5 GPA overall − Minimum 3.75 GPA in the major − Financial can be a consideration in awarding the scholarship. − Evidence of involvement in education related professional activities such as tutoring, work with youth group~ membership and participation in education related professional organizations, and participation in education related workshops, especially leadership roles will be considered in awarding the scholarship. − Additional consideration may be given to the student that has indicated an interest in or strong record in science. Courses taken in science and an interest in teaching elementary science, although not a major criterion should be considered in the final selection of the scholarship recipient Helen L. Buckley Scholarship in Elementary Education (up to $1,000 per year) Preference will be given to applicants from Bureau County. The applicant must provide a letter of application and two letters of recommendation, one from a former teacher and one from a friend of the family; and − be a freshman or sophomore majoring in Elementary Education with either the elementary or early childhood option; − have a grade point average of 3.6 or better; and − rank in the top 10% of his/her graduating class. Jessie Ferne Routh Grice Scholarship (up to $300 per year) The applicant must provide two letters of recommendation--if a freshman, one must be from a high school teacher; and − be an incoming freshman, an incoming transfer student, or a currently enrolled student classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior; − plan to teach at the elementary level; − if a freshman, be in the upper 25% of his/her class and have an ACT composite score of 25 or higher, and provide a high school transcript indicating class rank and total ACT; − if a transfer or currently enrolled student, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and provide most current transcript; − be enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours; and − to be eligible for annual renewal, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and reapply for each year of renewal; renewal will not exceed four years of continuous enrollment. Wrenn R. & Evelyn Grice Scholarship ($750; subject to change) The student must provide two (2) letters of recommendation for the scholarship with the application, with at least one from a former teacher or current employer. Must submit a high school transcript indicating class rank and total ACT (incoming freshmen) , or current transcript (current student). − Incoming high school graduate in the upper 25% of his/her class and have an ACT composite score of 25 or higher, or be currently enrolled having a GPA of 3.0 or higher − Must be a resident of Fulton or Knox counties − Must plan to teach at the elementary or secondary level Carol J. Grice Major Scholarship (up to up $300 per year) Applicants whose education was interrupted and are now returning to complete degree requirements and transfer students are especially encouraged to apply. The applicant must provide two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a former teacher or current employer; and − be an incoming freshman, an incoming transfer student, or a currently enrolled student classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior; − plan to teach at the elementary level; − if a freshman, be in the upper 25% of his/her class and have an ACT composite score of 25 or higher; − if a transfer or currently enrolled student, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and provide most current transcript; − be enrolled for a minimum of 6 semester hours; and − to be eligible for renewal, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and reapply for each year of renewal; renewal will not exceed four years of continuous enrollment. Leanne L. Grice Porch Scholarship (up to $300 per year). Applicants with home schooling are especially encouraged to apply. The applicant must provide two letters of recommendation; if freshman, one must be from a high school teacher; and − be an incoming freshman, an incoming transfer student, or a currently enrolled student classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior; − plan to teach at the elementary level; − if a freshman, be in the upper 25% of his/her class and have an ACT composite score of 25 or higher, and provide a high school transcript indicating class rank and total ACT; − if a transfer student or currently enrolled student, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and provide most current transcript; − be enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours; and − to be eligible for renewal, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and reapply for each year of renewal; renewal will not exceed four years of continuous enrollment. Mary L. Hinman Memorial Scholarship ($1,000; currently enrolled & transfer students only) The applicant also must write an essay explaining why he/she wants to be a teacher and how the scholarship will help his/her education.
