A highly educational/engaging and entertaining week featuring selected
keynote addresses, numerous plenary, concurrent, and poster presentations,
several panel discussions, educational and training workshop opportunities,
vendor exhibits/displays, and other special sessions (e.g., film festival,

and contemporary fuels management programs designed to reduce
risks to communities and to improve and maintain ecosystem health.
• To provide current fire environment trends as context for benchmarking
lessons learned against future challenges and increased risk to
communities.
• To raise awareness of the diversity of approaches, issues and ideas in
wildland fire management.
• Develop innovative ideas for management and research.
• To foster new collaborations between managers and researchers and
between groups in different regions and countries.

3RD F I RE BE HAVI OR AND F UE L S CONF ERENCE
The International
Association of
Wildland Fire is
committed to
minimizing the
environmental impact of
its conferences and meeting through:
• Reducing the amount of solid waste
produced by the event;
• Reducing energy and water
consumption at the event;
• Minimizing or off-setting harmful
emissions resulting from vehicular
transportation and energy consumption associated with the event;
• Disposing of solid and liquid waste
in an environmentally responsible
manner;
• Selecting facilities who have
developed a sustainability policy;
• Buying environmentally aware
products; and
• Educating participants and
exhibitors.
We invite our conference participants
and vendors to join us in this goal of incorporating environmentally responsible procedures and practices and in
the use of environmentally responsible
products while participating in this conference. Working together, we can
make this a successful 'Green' event.
Please remind yourself and help
others to remember to reduce, reuse,
and recycle!

The first two IAWF Fire Behavior and Fuels Conferences held in 2006
(Portland, OR) and in 2007 (Destin, FL) presented valuable opportunities for
sharing information about wildland fire globally. The third installment in this
special series holds the same potential.
The 1910 fires in the Northern Rocky Mountains were a precedent setting
event and have since had far-reaching implications on how the wildland fire
community and society as a whole views and deals with wildland fires
regionally, nationally and internationally. It seems only fitting that on the 100th
anniversary of this historic event we reflect on lessons learned from the past
as we implement innovative and contemporary best practices with managing wildland fires in the future.
The conference will feature some 90 oral presentations and an approximately
equal number of poster presentations on virtually every aspect of wildland
fire research and operational experiences related to the themes of this
conference and the conference series in general. This will include contributions related to the physical, biological, and social sciences, was well as
from the field of economics.
“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
– George Santayana (1906)
The International Association of Wildland Fire is proud to partner
with the International Fire Relief Mission whose mission is to provide
life-saving assistance to active-duty firefighters and rescue
personnel in countries lacking adequate education or equipment;
provide specialized demonstrations on using donated fire and
rescue equipment in accordance with internationally recognized standards;
and ensure successful, long-term assistance by developing international
partnerships and collaborations for continued support, preparation and
accountability at the receiving country.
