Position Title: Outdoor Recreation Graduate Assistant
Reports to: Andrew Martin, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator

Terms of Employment:
 Academic year stipend, plus summer hourly employment
 Twenty hours/week
 One Year Period; a one year renewable option
Compensation: WRS is able to pay the GA stipend (is $9204/academic year for 2012/13), plus
summer hourly wages. Professional development opportunities may be financially supported
to some degree.

activities, educational programs and services, skill and leadership building activities and

and recreational programs and services directly to UNI students, faculty, staff, retirees and their

Position Description:
 Trip, Clinics, and Activities Program
o Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First-Aid Certified preferred or willing
to obtain before start date
o Good driving record
o University 15 passenger van certification training within 1 month after start date
o Assist with coordinating and implementation of UNI Outdoors trips and field
clinics. Trips include, but are not limited to, rafting, kayaking, backpacking, rock
climbing, hiking, caving, canoeing, and skiing. Clinic topics include, but are not


limited to belay, lead belay, kayak rolling, trip planning, and backcountry
cooking.
o Assist with the hiring and training of UNI Outdoors Trip Coordinators
o Manage Trip Coordinator Development Training Program.
o Assist with the development and implementation of campus-wide trip
promotion through emails, website, and fliers.
o Coordinate outdoor youth camp
o Perform other duties assigned.
Equipment Rental Program
o Assist with management of the Outdoor Recreation equipment room including
large reservations such as canoes, trailers. etc.
o Inventory, repair, and maintenance of UNI Outdoors equipment, such as tents,
canoes, kayaks, stoves, etc.
o Keep an accurate record of all equipment.
o Assist with interview, hire, train, and scheduling UNI Equipment Rental
employees.
o Manage rental of gear for individual and class use.
o Assist in providing bike maintenance for patrons.
Climbing Wall Program
o Assist with the interview, hire, train, and scheduling of UNI Climbing Wall
employees.
o Assist in the general operations of the climbing wall.
o Assist with scheduling all climbing wall special events.
o Coordinate and instruct belay and lead climbing clinics.
o Maintain climbing wall participation records.
o Manage and organize inventory of climbing wall closet.
o Assist with the inspection and maintenance of the climbing wall, including
routes, holds, and general wall structure.
o Coordinate and manage annual climbing competition.
Qualifications:
 B.A. in Leisure Services, Recreation, or related field required
 Experience assisting with program planning, marketing and implementation
 Must be a full-time, degree-seeking student in a graduate program (e.g., Postsecondary
Education: Student Affairs; Health Promotion, Leisure/Recreation or other related field
preferred)
 Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00
 Possess strong interpersonal and organization skills
 Demonstrate evidence of competent written and oral communication skills
 Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and to conduct oneself in a highly
professional and ethical manner
 A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
