Physics 480, Quantum Mechanics, Fall 2015 (Iowa State University) Instructor: Chunhui Chen, Office: Zaffarano A423; Tel: 515-‐294-‐5062 (Office), 515-‐441-‐0170(Cell), Email: cchen23@iastate.edu Office hour: 2:00pm – 4:00pm every Monday and also by appointment. TA: LuWen Jiang, Email: jianglw@iastate.edu Course webpage: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~cchen23/ISU/Class/Phys480_Fall_2015/ Text book: Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, David J. Griffiths (Prentice Hall) 2nd edition Class: Physics 39, MWF 12:10pm – 1:00pm Prerequisites: PHYS 322 (Introduction to Modern Physics II), MATH 385 (Introduction to Partial Differential Equations) Credits: 3 Course goals: This is the first semester of a full-‐year course. In this course you will learn: a systematic development of the formalism and applications of quantum mechanics; solutions to the time independent Schrodinger equation for various one-‐dimensional potentials including the harmonic oscillator; operator methods; Heisenberg picture; angular momentum; the hydrogen atom; spin; symmetry properties. Learning objectives: In these days the concepts and techniques of quantum mechanics are essential in many areas of engineering and science. This course is a substantial and rigorous introduction to quantum mechanics and how to use it. It is specifically designed for students who are interesting in scientific and engineering careers in academia or industry. Homework assignments: Once per week, assigned on Wednesday. The homework is due next Wednesday and the solution of the homework will be made available afterwards. There are typically several problems in each homework assignment. Each problem carries equal points. The total point of each homework is 10. Exams: Two midterms and one final. Exams are open book. You can use the textbook and lecture notes. No other materials are allowed. Typically there are three problems in the midterm exam, and four problems in the final exam. One problem in each exam will come from the homework problem sets (very similar but not necessarily identical). Please note that no makeup exam will be offered unless you have a legitimate reason (with proof) to miss the exam, such as medical/personal emergencies... Grading: Midterms are 30 points each, final is 70. All problem sets add to 20 points, so the maximum point is 150. It is not possible for me to set a correspondence between points and a letter grade now; however one-‐half of all points will guarantee you to pass.
