SUMMARY
THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES’
RECORDS DECISION PANEL, 23 NOVEMBER 2015
Department for Transport – WWII War Risks Insurance Records
The Panel agreed that the following records from this collection should be
selected as they contain unique information that cannot be found in The
National Archives’ existing holdings:




Cargo Insurance Claim index cards
Cargo Insurance Claims
Hull Claim files
Volumes, Ledgers and loose files – these will require further
investigation to check whether they should all be preserved.
The Panel concurred that these records will be of great interest to historians
and family researchers. They will also provide an important comparison with
the WWI War Risks Insurance Records already held at The National Archives.
The Panel agreed that the Enquiry/Casework index cards and Department for
Transport casework files should not be selected as these were files created
by Department for Transport to log enquiries from the public about the War
Risk Records.
HM Land Registry – 1862 Land Registration Act Registers
(284 leather bound volumes and c400 maps)
The Panel were advised that, in 2014, HM Land Registry had scanned and
released the 1862 Act registers. Accordingly, The Land Registrar could now
discharge his duty to keep the original paper records and it was proposed to
transfer these to The National Archives for permanent preservation.
The Panel agreed that the original registers and c400 title plans should be
selected for preservation at The National Archives, as only they can
demonstrate how the 1862 registers actually worked and how the short
comings of the 1862 Act informed procedural change. In addition, these
records will be of considerable interest to family and house historians.
Department for Transport – Great Western Railway record
entitled “GWR Particulars of junctions with other railways A-G”
The Panel agreed that The National Archives should accept the donation of
this volume from The Friends of The National Archives. The volumes for
“H-O” (RAIL 253/368) and “P-Z” (RAIL 253/369) are already held at The
National Archives and this will complete the series.

(1 box, (0.14 metre) covering the year 1963)
The Panel agreed that these duplicate files can be destroyed, but only after it

transferred to The National Archives.
