Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama,
Communication Interns
Background:
The Girl Scout movement started over 100 years ago and is the preeminent organization in the world for
training young women in leadership skills. They strive to build girls of courage, confidence and character
who make the world a better place. Girl Scouting has impacted the lives of thousands of young women.
The Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama encompasses 30 counties in central and southern Alabama, from
Mobile to Auburn. They are one of two service centers, the other located in Montgomery. They have
traditional programs for troops, outreach programs with the Housing Board and Strickland Youth Center,
and in-school programs at underserved schools.

The Girl Scout organization released a curriculum series, “It’s Your Story, Tell It,” which covers
topics, such as the media, writing, story boarding and communications in general. An intern
would help develop a program around this series to either offer to troops as a weekend event or as
a module that leaders could work on with the girls.
There is also an organization called, “Press Reps,” comprised of girls of all ages. These girls write
articles and take pictures to submit (internally to the organization) about events and activities.
Sometimes, they appear on radio or television interviews (external to the organization) to discuss
cookie sales and other events. An intern would work with the girls by making and collecting
assignments, helping them improve their skills and possibly arranging some guest speakers or
field trips for them.
The intern would be expected to help with the planning of programs by making contacts, creating
and maintaining spreadsheets, sending confirmations, etc.
He/she may also be expected to write some brief articles about events and programs for
publication in the Virtual Volunteer, Girl Blog and GSSA Weekly.
The intern may be expected to write some press releases promoting upcoming events.
This is not a paid internship.
