Shift: smock dress female clothing 2. ‘als’ – alias 3. £ S D: Pounds Shilling Pence (old pence). Therefore 2:10 meant £0, 2 shillings and 10 old pence. There were 20 shillings to a pound and 12 old pence per shilling 4. Supervision of prison hulk convicts was passed on to an ‘Overseer’. The Overseer was a private businessman used by the government to run the hulks. There was also a separate arragement for a contractor to supply food, shelter and clothing to the convicts. Often both roles were fulfilled by the same person (thus William Cowdrey’s signature on the inventory). 1 Sic - ‘clothes’
