LEGAL ASSISTANT SOCIAL SERVICES GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES This position directly supports the attorneys in the agency and is responsible for sending out notices for all court hearings, typing court orders, issuing subpoenas, maintaining court files and assisting with pre-trial conferences. This position requires an increase in the degree of independence and knowledge of the legal system regarding Child Welfare and Adult Services. Work requires a significant knowledge of office procedures and practices as well as office programs, organizational structure and the ability to initiate, monitor, review and maintain a variety of documents to comply with case standards. This employee functions independently while under the supervision of a Social Work Supervisor III. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED Employee responsible for typing court orders on a weekly basis and mailing them to the appropriate judge. Responsible for sending out notices for all court hearings. Responsible for scheduling pre-trial each week. Responsible for completing necessary steps for newspaper publications Responsible for typing subpoenas and sending them to be served either by this county, another state or by certified mail Responsible for completing criminal record checks within the county and state. Responsible for typing all legal documents, correspondence, and filing all legal documents for juvenile and adult cases. Employee must be able to work closely with paralegal, staff attorneys, supervisors and social workers. Employee must have a thorough knowledge of juvenile court documents and adult incompetent documents to know which documents to use and when. RECRUITMENT STANDARDS Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Employee in this position should have significant knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, and spelling to compose and/or proofread correspondence, court orders, and other materials. This position requires the ability to learn and work independently. The employee must possess the ability to work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties that may be sensitive in nature. Must possess a Legal Asst Social Services thorough knowledge of Federal/State Child Welfare standards regarding specific language required in court orders, and the appropriate time frames for filing legal documents within the judicial system, MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least two years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
