EnrollmentUpdate
TheCollegehasconcludedamostsuccessfulspringenrollmentcycle,havingmetor
exceededmostofourtargetsandprojections.AsofFebruary2,wehaveenrolled14,590
students,including1034freshmenand856transferstudents.Includedinthisnewest
cohortoffreshmenare135studentswhosuccessfullycompletedtheCUNYStartprogram.
TheOfficeofNewStudentEngagement,ledbyDr.CarolAllyne,hadanotablelaunch
offering500newlyadmittedstudentsinformation,resourcesandsupport.Workingclosely
withtheOfficeofAdmissions,TestingandAcademyAdvisement,NewStudentEngagement
SpringactivitiesconcludedwithaWelcomeWeek--anexcitingline-upofeventsand
activitiesduringthefirstweekofclassesdesignedtosuccessfully“onboard”thenewest
membersofourCommunity.
TheOfficeofAdmissionsisnowfocusedonFall2016,havingalreadyreceivedourfirst
groupoffreshmenapplicationsfortheFallsemester.
Faculty/StaffHonorsandAccomplishments
•
GoodNews!OurNCLEXpassratefor2015was91.01%,thehighestinCUNYand
mostofNewYorkState,whichhasanaverageof80.57%.Queensborough’spassratewas
alsohigherthanHunter(89.1%),Lehman(81.2%),andLaGuardia(89.7%).
•
TheQCCPresidentialFellowshipProgram(PFP)isintendedtoprovidesupportfor
mid-careerfacultywhorequireadditionalresourcestoengageinscholarlyactivities,to
enhancetheiropportunityforpromotion.Thegoalofthisprogramistoencouragemidcareerfacultywhoareworkingtodevelopastrongrecordofscholarlyactivityfor
promotiontothenextrank.Threefaculty,HamidNamdar(EngineeringTechnology),
PatrickWallach(MathandComputerSciences),andConstanceWilliams(Library),were
recipientsofthePFP.

TheQCCAwardforExcellenceinFacultyScholarshipisawardedtotenuredfaculty,
andrecognizesa“sustainedanddistinguishedrecordofscholarshiporcreative
performance,evidencedbypublications,professionalpresentations,and/orcreative
works.”Itisofferedeverytwoyears.Thisyear’srecipientsforthisprestigiousawardwere

MoniChauhan(Chemistry),andNidhiGadura(BiologicalSciencesandGeology).Therewill
beaceremonyonApril5,2016tohonortheiraccomplishments,
•PleasejoinmeincongratulatingDr.UrszulaGolebiewskaforsharingthe2016
BreakthroughPrizeinFundamentalPhysics.Thisextraordinaryprizeofthreemillion
dollarswasawardedtoatotaloffiveteamscomprisedofmorethan1,300individual
physicists.Urszulawaspartoftheteamthatinvestigatedneutrinooscillation,andall
memberswillshareintherecognitionfortheirwork.
•CongratulationstoProfessorJulesAllenonhisnewbookMarchingBands,a
photographicessayonblackmarchingbandsacrossAmerica.Thebook,whichwas
publishedincollaborationwiththeQCCArtGallery,hasreceivedglowingreviewsinThe
NewYorkTimes,amongotherpublications.FourofthefivebooksbyProfessorAllenwere
publishedbytheGallery,includingtheGallery’sfirsteverpublishedbook,HatsandHats
Not,whichaccompaniedProfessorAllen’sfirstQCCArtGalleryexhibit.
•Anothernewbook,TheConMen:HustlinginNewYorkCity,iscoauthoredby
ProfessorTrevorMiltonoftheDepartmentofSociologyatQueensboroughandProfessor
TerryWilliamsoftheNewSchoolforSocialResearch.Theywererecentlyinvitedtogivea
readingandlectureaboutthebookattheNewYorkPublicLibraryonthesociological
reasonswhyconartistsplaytheirgamesandthepsychologicaltrickstheyusetowin.
Prof.MirnaLekić(Music)wasawardedaCUNYDiversityProjectsDevelopment
FundgranttosharecontemporarychambermusicfromArmenia,Azerbaijan,China,India,
Iran,Japan,TaiwanandTunisiawithresidentsofNewYorkCity.Twoconcertswillbe
presentedtothepublicfreeofchargebyEnsemble365,agroupcomprisedofCUNY
GraduateCenterstudentsandAlumni.
Student/AlumniHonors
•WecongratulateQCCstudentsYueliChenandYiJiang,whowerenamedPhiTheta
Kappa/USATodayAll-NewYorkScholars.Thispastsummer,YiJiangparticipatedina
ResearchExperiencesforUndergraduatesinternshipatVanderbiltUniversitywhereshe
conductedresearchonbiohybridsolarcells.Shewastheonlycommunitycollegestudent
participantintheprogram.IamgratefultoDrs.EmilyTaiandParisSvoronosfortheir
tirelessworkasadvisorsandmentorstothestudentsinourLambdaSigmachapterofthe
nationalPhiThetaKappaHonorSociety.
•InJanuary,EngineeringTechnologystudentsKelvinHenryandBrianMunevarwere
selectedastwoofeightfinaliststomakeittothefinalphaseoftheCUNYCapOne
CommunityCollegeInnovationChallengecompetition.Morethantwentyteams
participatedintheChallenge,whichwasheldatBaruchCollege.InMay,thefinalistswill
competeforover$25,000inprizemoney.TheCUNYCapOneeventfeaturedkeynote
speakersSteveBlank,creatoroftheLeanStartupmovement,andHarrySmithofNBCand
CNBC.BothparticipatedasaresultofspecialinvitationsbyQueensborough.Drs.Christine

MooneyandEdgarTroudt,AssistantProfessorintheDepartmentofTourismand
HospitalityatKingsboroughCommunityCollege,areCo-PrincipalInvestigatorsofagrant
thatissupportingthecompetition.CongratulationsChristinefortheoutstandingworkyou
dowiththesestudents.

•FormerChemistrystudentEmilyHughesYoshhasbeenacceptedintoRutgersNew
JerseyMedicalSchool.OncompletingQueensboroughin2008,Emilymatriculatedintothe
HonorsCollegeatSUNYStonyBrookandwasacceptedintotheirhighlyregarded
pharmacologyprogram.There,herresearchinosteoporosisledtopublicationand
presentationsonthedevelopmentofanovelcompoundtotreatthisprevalentdisease.
Congratulationstohermentors,Dr.JunShinandDr.ParisSvoronosoftheDepartmentof
Chemistry,andDr.ReginaSullivan,oftheDepartmentofBiologicalSciencesandGeology.
•RenzoSamame,whoearnedhisLS1(Chemistry)Associatedegreein2007,wenton
toobtainhisbachelor’sdegreeinOrganicChemistryfromHunterin2009.Hewasthen
acceptedwithafull-timegraduatefellowshipattheUniversityofCalifornia-Irvine,where
heco-publishedtwopeer-reviewedjournalpublications,alongthewaytoearninghis
doctoraldegreelastNovember.Hewillcontinuehiscareeronapost-doctoralassignment
atUCLA.WhileatQueensborough,Renzopresentedhisfindingsatmorethaneight
AmericanChemicalSocietyconferences.Dr.LuisVargasandDr.Svoronoshadthepleasure
ofwitnessingRenzodevelopintoafuturepotentialfacultymember.
•KevinChavez,Classof2012andaBiochemistrygraduatefromStonyBrookis
completinghisfirstyearinMedicalSchoolatStonyBrookonatuitionfreescholarship.
Another2012graduateMarjorieMoralesisalsoaBiochemistrygraduateatStonyBrook.
SheisfinishingherfirstyearinMedicalSchoolatAlbertEinstein,herchoiceamongthefive
differentMDprogramsinwhichshewasaccepted.
•Dr.HodaMirafzal,a2003Queensboroughgraduate,isaLecturerinPhysical
ChemistryatCaliforniaPolytechnicStateUniversity.Sheearnedherbachelor’sinscienceat
CooperUnion,andsubsequentlystudiedattheUniversityofCalifornia,Merced,whereshe
earnedherdoctoraldegreein2011.AtQCC,sheconductedresearchunderDrs.Sasan
Karimi,PedroIrigoyenandParisSvoronos.
Opportunities/ResourcesforStudents
NowthroughApril15,2016,SingleStopwillmakeFreeTaxPreparationavailableforQCC
studentsintheStudentUnion,UpperLevel.Inaddition,wewillhaveoneSaturdaysession

AtitsFebruary5,2016,meetingtheGeneralEducationAssessmentTaskForcereviewed
resultsfromthefacultysurveyontheGeneralEducationOutcomesaswellasresultsfrom
theFall2015DigicationPilot.TheTaskForcewillbeconveningaforumforallfacultyto
discussthemesfromthesurveyandpossiblerevisionofthecollege’sgeneraleducation
outcomes.
TheTaskForcewillbesendingrequeststoalltheacademicdepartmentsforparticipation
intheSpring2016collectionofstudentwork(artifacts)tobeevaluatedaccordingtothe
fouroutcomerubricscreatedbytheTaskForceandpostedontheAssessmentwebsite,at
http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/assessment/geatf.html.Thisyearstudentartifactswillbe
loadedintotheePortfolioplatform,Digication.Facultydevelopmentsessionswillbe
offeredinsupportofthisproject,andstudentsupportwillbeprovidedbytheACC.
AssessmentUpdate
Asinpastsemesters,theAssessmentInstituteforQCCfacultywillbeheldthisspring
semesteroverfoursuccessiveFridays—February19and26andMarch4and11—from12
noonto2:00p.m.inLB24.AninvitationtothefacultywassentoutonJanuary28,andthe
cohortisbeingformed.Interestedfacultyshouldasktheirdepartmentchairstoforward
theirnominationstoDeanArthurCorradetti.Sinceitsinceptioninfall2014,overone
hundredfacultymembershaveparticipatedintheinstitute.
BTECHUpdate
OnFriday,January29th,74BTECHsophomoreslaunchedtheircollegecareersby
attendingtheirfirstcollegeclass,(SP-211)SpeechCommunication.Thesesophomores
weredeemedqualifiedtoattendthecourseatthistimeasaresultoftheiracademic
standingatthehighschoolandtheirperformanceinthecoursespecificIndicatorsof
StudentReadiness,designedanddevelopedbythecollegefacultyandhighschool
teachers.StudentswhoarenotcurrentlyattendingSP-211willhaveanopportunityto
enrollinalatersemester.Earlierintheweek,studentsandtheirparentsattendeda3.5
hourQCCOrientationatwhichconsistentthemesemergedfromallthespeakers:the
recognitionthatstudentsareresponsiblefortheireducation;thattheymustadvocatefor
themselves;andtheymustbehaveasresponsibleadultswhileoncampusandin
class.VicePresidentDeniseWardkickedofftheeventwithadvicethatthisisaturning
pointintheireducationalcareers;one,inwhich,theyneedtobeginowningtheireducation
throughself-advocacyandstrongcommunicationwithfaculty,advisorsandsupportstaff
oncampus.Inaddition,Dr.AndreaSalisandAssistantDeanLauraBrunodescribedthe
threecomponentsoftheAcademies;Dr.CarolAlleynediscussedcollegereadiness;Dr.
BrianKerrandtheOfficeofPublicSafetyspokeaboutsafetyandsecurityoncampus;and
theirfaculty,AssistantProfessor,JodiVanDerHorn-GibsonandLecturer,ElaineThompson,
reviewedthecourseRulesofConductandSyllabus.AshleyLegitime,BTECHCollege
LiaisonandAdvisor,walkedtheaudiencethroughtheStudentConsentFormsandthen
overtosmilefortheirQCCIDs.Additionally,allthehighschoolteachersandstaffmembers

ofBTECHwerepresent.TheBTECHstafffeedbackpraisedtheconsistentmessageand
cultureofQCCbeinggeneratedbyallspeakerswhich,goingforward,theywillfully
supportwhenthestudentsareatthehighschool.WithtimeforQandA,theOrientation
provedtobeaninformativeandveryworthwhileeventforallinvolvedandservedto
strengthenthepartnershipandteamworkbetweenBTECHandQCCstaff,teachersand
faculty.
Grants/GrantOpportunities
Queensboroughfacultysubmitted64proposalsforthePSCCUNYResearchAwards,up
from58submissionsinthelastround.Apost-applicationsatisfactionsurveyisunderway
toobtainfeedbackandimprovetheGrantsOfficeservicestofaculty.
TwonewCUNYgrantprogramswereannouncedinDecembertoreplace,theCIRGandthe
3CIRGgrantprograms:
1) TheInterdisciplinaryResearchGrant(IRG)Programseekstosupportand
encouragefacultyresearcherswhowilltackleglobalchallengesorproblemsthat
affecttheneedsofurbanpopulations.Thegoalofthisprogramistoprovideseed
fundingforprojectsthatwillbecomeeligibleandcompetitiveforexternalfunding.
CUNYexpectstoawardapproximately8-10one-yearawardsof$40,000each.
Deadlineforsubmissiontothefundingsource:March4,2016.
2) TheCommunityCollegeResearchGrantProgram(CCRG)willsupportfaculty
researchatCUNYcommunitycollegesthroughtwodistincttracks:pedagogical
researchandsupportoffacultyandstudentswhoparticipateinmentoredresearch
experiences.DeadlineforsubmissiontothefundingsourceisApril1,2016.
