Minutes of the Student Activities Committee Meeting of February 22, 2007
MINUTES
PRESENT:
Barbara Blake-Campbell; Shaun Bruney; Andrea Cohen; Beth Counihan; Sharon Reeves; Gisela Rivera.
ABSENT:
Dean Paul Jean-Pierre, Dean of Student Affairs
The first meeting of the Spring 2007 semester was called to order at 2:20 P.M. by Beth Counihan, President
of the Student Activities Committee.
The new student government member, Mr. Shaun Bruney, was introduced and welcomed.
Minutes of the December 7, 2006 meeting were read and approved.
I.
Updates were given with regard to the following issues:
A.
The Student Bill of Rights document:
1. Dr. Counihan reported that the Academic Senate voted against adopting the
document in its present form;
2. Ms. Rivera stated that the student government would continue to work on revising the
document.
B.
Ms. Rivera reported on the recruitment of student government officers:
1. She informed on the loss of several student officers, including the treasurer and the
president. The executive vice-president is now serving as president;
2. She announced that the next elections for student government officers are scheduled
for April. At the present time, there are three candidates for the office of president.
For the first time, students will be able to vote on-line. In March, faculty will be
formally asked to recommend interested students.
C.
Prof. Blake-Campbell reported that the New Student welcome packet is complete, as
originally distributed to students.
II.
Ms. Rivera reported on club events for the month of February 2007:

A.
Approximately one hundred students participated in the Club Fair on the 14 , despite the
inclement weather;
B. At least 107 tickets were already sold for the February 22 “Mardi Gras” student government
party.
III.
The following reports and suggestions were made with regard to Student Competitions and
Achievements:
A. Dr. Counihan reported on her collaboration with Anna May Jagoda and Ruth Griggs-Fontana
to publicize college-wide announcements that highlight student competitions and
achievements;
B. Dr. Counihan cited that there have been a few responses since January. Of special note, is
the agreement between QCC’s Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts and
the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. to permit QCC students to
perform at the center;
C. Dr. Counihan would like to see an increase in the number of original submissions to
Queenszine, the on-line journal of arts and ideas that highlight student achievements in a
variety of artistic and literary expressions: graphic arts; video and film clips; music; as well as
poetry and prose. Dr. Counihan not ed that student winners receive prizes. Queenszine is
sponsored by the Department of English, and Dr. Counihan serves as its editor-in-chief.
1. Ms. Cohen recommended making announcements about Queenszine in all ST 100
classes;
2. Ms. Rivera suggested that regular announcements about Queenszine could be made
through the installation of an electronic kiosk in the Student Union building.
IV.
New Business:
A.
Ms. Rivera reported on the increase use of Tiger Mail by students;
B.
Committee meeting dates tentatively scheduled for the Spring 2007 semester were
reconsidered and approved.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 P.M.
