Graphene Membrane Program Large-area membranes Global market for membrane separa,on technologies will grow to USD 25.7 billion annually by 2017. Applica, ons include environmental rehabilita,on, chemical processing, pharmaceu, cal and water treatment (waste water & agriculture). Water treatment makes up the vast majority of this market. As water shortages and environmental degrada,on con,nue to threaten billions of people around the world, the challenge will be to find more effec,ve technologies to address these issues. Our goal is to develop graphene membrane technologies to improve the health and well-‐being of people world wide. Research Exper,se Applica, ons Partnerships Our graphene membranes program is well advanced: § Research has been under way for 2 years’ § Received an Australian Research Council industry linkage grant with Ionic Industries § Patent pending in Australia – IP Licensed § Current capability to create 130 x 140 mm membranes § Scalable process with technology to create large-‐area graphene membranes. § Monash is targe,ng applica, ons in several areas of importance to the Australian economy : § Removal of natural organic maRer from water which can result in carcinogens when water is chlorinated § Removal of hormones and chemicals from water that can have detrimental health effects § Recovery of precious metals from water used in mining processes § Separa,on of lactose and proteins from dairy products § Produc,on of lactoferrin products for medicinal purposes § Wine processing including smoke taint removal and tartrate stabilisa,on Our Team § A/Prof. Mainak Majumder § Abozar Akbari § Professor Dibakar BhaRacharyya (Center of Membrane Science, University of Kentucky) § Dr. Anita Hill (CSIRO) § Professor Huan,ng Wang § Dr. Zhe Liu Our next steps Key Contact A.Prof. Mainak Majumder Department of Mechanical And Aerospace Engineering +613 9905 6255 mainak.majumder@monash.edu Scale-‐up of membrane manufacturing Membrane tuning for targets and tes,ng Membrane module development Module retrofiRed to bench-‐scale filtra,on set-‐ups Technology transfer to end-‐user industry Our work has been greatly facilitated by our industry and academic partnerships: • Ionic Industries • Australian Research Council • CSIRO • University of Kentucky, USA
