ENROLLMENTUPDATE
DirectAdmissionofnewstudentsforSpring2016willbeginonMonday,November16th.In
addition,ourAdmissionsOfficecontinuestoreceivephasesofadmittedstudentsfromthe
University.AspartofourongoingfocustoexpandrecruitmentofstudentsfromNassau
County,wehaveassignedadedicatedrecruitertodeepentheconnectionsbetween
potentialfeederschoolsandtheCollege.
AcademicAdvisementandRegistration:ContinuingStudentAcademicAdvisementfor
Winter/Spring2016iswellunderway.Registrationisalsounderwayforstudentswitha
2.0GPAandover.OnThursday,November12th,studentswithaGPAlessthan2.0willbe
abletoregisterforclasses,providedtheyhavemetwiththeirrespectiveacademicadvisor.
TheannualQCCOpenHouseforprospectivestudentsandtheirfamilieswillbeheldon
Saturday,November14th.CoordinatedbyourAdmissionsOffice,thiseventinvites
prospectivestudents,theirfamiliesandgueststovisitourcampus,tourourfacilitiesand
attendpresentationsontheAcademies,workshopsonHowtoPayforCollegeandmore.
FacultyHonorsandAchievements
TheChancellor’sFallReceptiontohonor2014-15CUNYAwardandGrantRecipientswill
takeplaceDecember8,2015attheCooperHewittMuseum.Thenomineesfrom
QueensboroughincludeDr.AzitaMayeli“InternationalConferenceonHarmonicAnalysis
andApplications”(NSF);Dr.MonicaTrujillo“PathwaystoGeoscience”(NSF),Dr.Marie

SeveralcolleagueshavebeenacceptedtopresentattheAssociationofAmericanColleges

Equity,InclusiveExcellence,andDemocraticRenewal,”January20-23,2016,in
Washington,DC.AmyTraver(SocialSciences),ElizabethDiGiorgio(Art&Design),Andrea
Salis(OAA/HPED),ArthurCorradetti(SPAIE),LauraBruno(AdmissionandRecruitment),
BrianKerr(StudentAffairs)andFrantzAlcindor(AcademyAdvisement)willpresenton
theQueensboroughAcademiesincludinghighimpactpractices.Morethan360proposals
werereceived,andfewerthan25%wereaccepted.Theproposalsselectedforthis
conferencerepresenttheworkoffacultymembers,administrators,andhighereducation

thecountry.
GRANTOPPORTUNITIES
PSCCUNYResearchAwardCycle47WorkshopstookplaceonOctober14,2015.Richard
Markgraf,ProgramAdministratorforthePSC-CUNYawardsfromtheResearchFoundation,
conductedthisworkshop,whichwasattendedby28facultymembers.Afollow-upsurvey
wasconductedtoobtainfacultyfeedback.
MeetingsarebeingconductedwiththeDepartmentChairstoobtaininputastogrants
practicesandprocedures,particularlyintheareaofwritingandsubmissiontimetables,ongoingsupervision,andcompliancewithfundingsource’sregulations.
InFY2016,theNSFwillissuemulti-directoratesolicitationstosupportintegratedresearch
underthethemeofInnovationsattheNexusofFood,Energy,andWaterSystems
(INFEWS.)Thetotalamountallocatedis$74million.Inconjunctionwiththat,the
AmericanAssociationofCommunityColleges(AACC)andNationalScienceFoundation
(NSF)havepartneredtooffertheCommunityCollegeInnovationChallenge.Thiswill
encourageteamscomposedofcommunitycollegestudents,afacultymentor,anda
communityorindustrypartnertocompetetoproposeinnovativeSTEM-basedsolutions
forreal-worldproblemstheyidentifywithintheINFEWStheme.Finalteamswillbe
invitedtoattendafour-dayInnovationBootCamp.TheapplicationperiodisOctober15,

STEMcourses.ThegoaloftheseSTEMWaiversistopromotecreditaccumulationinSTEM
courseswhilenotjeopardizingTAPeligibility.QCCstudentsingoodacademicstanding,
whoarelegalresidentsofNewYorkCity,andenrolledinacreditprogram,canreceivea
tuitionwaiverforoneSTEMcourse(includinglab)duringthewinter2016intersession.
Uponcompletionofthecourse,thetuitionwaiverwillbeapplied.
Toencouragetimelydegreecompletion,QCCstudentswhobegantheirdegreeprogram
Spring2015andhavecompletedbetween26and29creditstowardstheirdegreeasofthe
endofthisfalltermareeligibletoreceivea2016Winterscholarshiptotakeacreditcourse
intheirdegreeprogramatQCCduringtheJanuary2016intersession.Thescholarshipsare
intendedtosupportastudentreachingthe“thirty-creditmilestone”ofhis/her
Queensboroughdegreewithinonecalendaryear.Alleligiblecandidatesmustsubmita
completedapplicationtotheOfficeofAcademicAffairsbyDecember4.
BTECHUPDATE
TheBTECHfallsemesteriswellunderway.The2015freshmanclassincludes110ninth
gradestudents,enrolledinhighschoolcoursesinEnglishLanguageArts,Algebra1,
Physics,USHistory,PhysicalEducation,IntroductiontoBusiness,andaCollegeandCareer
Seminar.Mostofthe10thgradestudentsareenrolledinhighschoolEnglishLanguage
Arts,Geometry,Biology,GlobalHistory,ArtandanIntroductiontoBusinessTechnology1:
Entrepreneurship(aMicrosoftOfficeSoftwareCertificationprogram).Inaddition,for
thosestudentsworkingatorbelowgradelevelinELAandMathematics,Academic
LearningLabsareprovideddaily.Lastmonth,meetingswereheldbetweenhighschool
teachersandcollegeprofessors,includingDr.SasanKarimi,QCCChemistryDepartment
Chairperson,toclearlydefinetheIndicatorsofStudentReadinessneededtobepracticedby
highschoolstudentsforoneyearpriortoeachcollegecoursebeingofferedinthefallof
2016.ThenextCurriculumPlanningCommittee(CPC)meetingwillbeheldatQCCon
November18that2:30pm.AspartoftheBTECHrecruitmentprocess,QCCfacultyDr.
WendyFord(Business)andProfessorRobertKueper(EngineeringTechnology)
volunteeredatthefallHighSchoolOpenHousestodiscussQCCdegreeprogramswithboth
prospectiveBTECHstudentsandtheirparents.BTECHmid-termassessmentsarebeing
measuredwithparent-teacherconferencesinprogress.Asalessonineducational
accountability,self-advocacyandpresentationskills,studentsarepreparingforand
leadingtheirownparent-teacherconferences.ProfessorAndreaSalisandAssistantDean
LauraBrunohavebecomeactiveco-chairsoftheTransition,InterventionandEnrichment
(TIE)sub-committeeplanningtodevelopsupportprogramstoassistthehighschool
studentstransitionfromhighschooltocollege,andlatertotheworkforce.Academic
EnrichmentprogramsintheformofServiceLearningprojectsareunderwayandprograms
thatwillsupporttutoringinterventionsarebeingstructured.SAP,thecorporatepartner,
presentedQCCandBTECHwithaYearTwoMentoringprogramtobeinauguratedwinter
of2016.Inaddition,discussionsareunderwaywithlocalSAPclientsviatheSAPUser
Group(ASUG)tobecomeactiveparticipantsontheBTECHIndustryAdvisoryCommittee.

STRATEGICPLANNINGATQUEENSBOROUGHandatCUNY
TheQCCstrategicplanningprocessisunderway.Focusgroupshavebeenconducted—with
facultygovernance,academicchairs,HEOs,andstudents—toencouragesharingideas
aboutandprovidinginputtothestrategicplanfor2016-17,organizedaroundthesix
collegefocusgoalsestablishedlastyear.Thesixgoalsare1)facultyandstaffdevelopment,
2)curriculum,3)QueensboroughAcademies,4)collegereadiness,5)useoftechnology,
and6)institutionbuilding.ThenextCollegeAdvisoryPlanningCommittee(CAPC)meeting
isscheduledforNovember18,whenapreliminarydraftofthestrategicplanwillbe
reviewedanddiscussed.Asinthepast,openhearingsforthecampuscommunitywilltake
placeinthespring.
InadditiontoQueensborough’sstrategicplanningprocess,CUNYisundergoingitsown.At
thistime,theUniversityissolicitingfeedbackfromtheentirecommunitytoits“strategic

FACILITIESUPDATE
Asalways,thereisalotofactivityregardingourfacilities.ThefirstphaseoftheScience
BuildingCourtyardprojectisestimatedtowrapupbylatewinter.Planningisunderway
forseveralprojectsduringthewinterbreak,includingrenovationofseveralChemistrylabs
fundedbyStateSenatorTobyStavisky.And,plansandapprovalsareinprocessforthe
reconstructionofourathletictrackoverthewinter/springseason,aswellasre-pavingthe
mainparkinglot#1nextsummer.
UPCOMINGEVENTS
TheQueensboroughAlumniAssociationissponsoringaQCCalumninetworkingreception
onFriday,November6from6:00p.m.to8:00p.m.intheOaklandDiningRoom.Invitations
tothis‘reunion’eventhavebeensentouttoalumniresidinginthefiveboroughsand
surroundingareas.
OnTuesday,November10at6:30p.m.intheCenter,theKupferbergHolocaustResource
CenterandArchiveswillholdacommemorationofKristallnachttohonorthememoryof
theviolentanti-Jewishpogromsthattookplacein1938Germany.Therewillbeapanel
discussionbysurvivorsofvariousgenocidesandhistoricaltraumas.
Mr.EdwinGonzalez,StudentLifeSpecialistintheOfficeofMilitary&Veterans’Services,
willaccompanyseveralofourstudentveteransattheAnnualVeterans’DayParadeon
Wednesday,November11thinManhattan.Theparadehonorstheserviceofourveterans
andsalutesthosecurrentlyonactiveduty.Thisyear’sparadewillcommemoratethe70th
AnniversaryoftheendofWorldWarIIandthe25thAnniversaryofDesertShield.The
UnitedStatesNavyisthisyear’sfeaturedmilitarybranch.TheArmy,Marines,AirForce
andCoastGuardarealsorepresented.

TheDepartmentofNewStudentEngagementwillhostaWelcomeSessionforprospective
studentsandtheirfamiliesonWednesday,November11that3:00p.m.inOakland.The
sessionisdesigned:tointroduceQCCapplicantstotheplacementtestprocess,toinform
thosestudentswithplacementtestresultaboutplacementoptions;toguidestudentsand
theirfamiliesthroughtheclassenrollmentprocess;toeducatestudentsandtheirfamilies
oncollegerelatedfinancialresponsibilities;andbegintheorientationofnewstudentsand
theirfamiliesforasuccessfultransitiontocollegelife.
Komediant,adocumentarythatlooksbackattheglorydaysoftheYiddishstagethrough
thelivesofatheatricalfamilywillbescreenedattheKHRCAonThursday,November12th,
