DEPARTMENT: Academic Advisement 2012-2013 ACADEMIC YEAR
MISSION
INSTRUCTIONS:
Your mission statement should be no more than 80 words in length.
The purpose of Academic Advisement is to assist both degree and non-degree students in
developing meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals, both short and
long-term, and aiding them in dealing with related areas such as career goals, motivation, and
advanced study. The ultimate responsibility for making decisions about educational plans and
life goals rests with the individual student. The academic advisor should assist students by
helping to identify and assess alternatives and the consequences of their decisions.
A. DEPARTMENT CORE ACTIVITIES AND PERFORMANCE
Core Activities
Key Performance Indicators
Indicators to Be
Assessed
Briefly list the major
activities conducted or
performed to support the
mission of the
department.
Briefly list the corresponding Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs) that measure the effectiveness of
the department’s activity. Key performance
indicators are not outcomes—for example, a KPI
might be “volume of service,” whereas an outcome
might be “increase volume of service by 5 percent”).
Increase the volume of service provided to
continuing students each semester. Evaluate this
activity by studying enrollment data, and measuring
student success outcomes.
Point of service surveys help to assess this core
activity.
Yes or no. Indicators
to be assessed should
come from the
previous year’s
report, part F,
column 4.

office.
The Advisement
Center has
created an
internal degree
audit system
which promises
to raise the six
year graduation
rate by at least
2% points each
year.
Actual outcome(s)
Recommended
action plan
The office was
successful in meeting
its goal of increasing
services to students by
10%. During the spring
13 semester,
The office was
successful in reaching
out to and advising
90% ((4100 out of
6300) of the continuing
students by May 31st.
The latest Institutional
Research "Fact Book"
showed a slight 1.2%
increase from 2004 2005.
For Spring 2013
commencement, there
were just over 300
more graduates.
We've learned that
it's important to set
dates with students.
If you inform them
of deadlines, the
majority of students
will react positively
and take care of
school related
business.
It's imperative to
work with other
units in Student and
Academic Affairs to
devise a way to
assist students
towards degree
completion. The
Academy Advisors,
Four-Year Transfer
Coordinator, and
Degree Audit
members should
come together on a
twice a semester
basis to review
student transcripts
and encourage
graduation.

**To be more effective and meaningful, assessment efforts should focus on selected KPIs each academic year; over time, assessments should be
rotated through all the department’s KPIs.
