Basic Skills Learning Center
The Basic Skills Learning Center's mission is to provide course mandated and course
non-mandated reading, writing, study skills, and ePortfolio support services to
Queenscorough Community College students who are enrolled in Based Educational Skills
courses so that these students may exit remediation and enroll in Queensborough
Community College's gateway courses in a timely manner.

BES students. Spring pass rates

38% for non-native speakers,
and 49% overall (32 BE 112

Increase the number of

immediately after exiting
the course.
98 out of 107 (91.6%) BES
reading fall 2010 students with
grades of NC immediately
registered, participated, and
completed a 20 hour ACT
COMPASS Reading Workshop in
January 2011.
The BSLC provided
Continuing
information concerning
the January 2011
workshops to faculty
through emails and hard
copy. Students were
notified through the
faculty. The
departmental deputy
chair emailed and sent a
hard copy concerning the
importance of faculty
intervention in
registering students for
the January 2011
workshops and to
support the enrollment of
exiting fall 2010
students. Schedule a
meeting that will present
the findings of this
strategy with new
department chair and
deputy chair. Set
policies and procedures
for the upcoming
academic year in
reference to maintaining
compliance of students
with grades of NC in
completing their remedial
process. The first-time
pass rate (54%) was
slightly higher than the
pass rate that included
multiple retesters (52%).
ACT COMPASS
Reading Retesting
Scores
Maintain a 50% or better
pass rate on retesting for
students who enroll in an
ACT COMPASS Reading
Workshop. On average,
students will raise retest
scores by at least 6 points.
The retesting pass rate for the
academic year (July 1, 2010 to
June 30, 2011) is undetermined
at this time as the June
workshops are presently in
session. As of June 1, 2011, the
pass rate is 68%. The number of
BE students with grades of NC
who completed a 20 hour
workshop is 419.
Students have been
informed that there is a
time limit on resolving
the grade of NC.
