Departmental procedures for conducting assessment
1. Our syllabi specify learning outcomes for each course. The department participates in reviews of all programs that require
mathematics courses as part of their curriculum.
2.The department has an on-going procedure for assessment. The Assessment Committee is responsible for developing
specific questions for comprehensive finals, along with rubrics to evaluate student outcomes on the questions. The syllabi are
then adjusted to reflect students' learning issues with the course.
3. This year the syllabi for MA 120, MA 440, and the Calculus sequence were revised and approved by the department.
Departmental participation in self-study/program review
Program(s): Reviewed Liberal Arts and Sciences
External Agency: Middle States
Date: 05/10/2011
Conclusions of Self Study: Articulation with CCNY Engineering Program needs work. Continued study for
ways of increasing passing rates in remedial mathematics is needed.
Conclusions of External Reviewers: There are articulation problems with the Linear Algebra course at CCNY. More
work is needed to improve the passing rates in MA 005 and MA 010.
Action Plan: MA 005 will become 80% workshop model which has had excellent results.
MA 010 changes will be instituted and current changes will be evaluated.

Course Assessed: MA 440 and MA 120
Educational Objectives: Students will be prepared to continue in the Math Sequence for their curriculum with the goal
of increasing graduation rates.
Curricular Objectives: Students will be prepared to succeed in the next math course in the sequence needed for their
curricula.
Results: On-going
Action Plan: Revise syllabi to allow more depth in topics students struggle with.
