MIT Fraternity, Sorority, and Independent Living Group Office Graduate Assistant Position Description The MIT Fraternity, Sorority, & Independent Living Group (FSILG) Graduate Assistant (GA) will work directly with the FSILG Office staff to provide leadership and educational development for MIT’s FSILG community and the FSILG student governing councils. The primary role of the GA is assist the FSILG Office oversee logistical and operational activities throughout the Academic Year. Through this experience, the GA will gain experience in event planning, office operations, and engaging in opportunities to better understand fraternities and sororities in a residential system. The GA will collaborate with a variety of functional units as well as multiple internal and external stakeholders. This position will report to one of the Assistant Directors for Fraternities, Sororities, and Independent Living Groups. Duties will be congruent with fulfilling the mission and vision of the FSILG Office, the Division of Student Life, and MIT. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Co-advise one of three student governing councils 2. Provide administrative support, referrals and resources to community members, including students, alumni, parents, and neighbors 3. Assist with recruitment initiatives (as needed), including event management and logistics, marketing, assessment, and Panhellenic Recruitment Counselor training 4. Support FSILG Office committees and programs including the Chapter Alumni Risk Management Advisor (CARMA) Program, Graduate Resident Advisor (GRA) trainings, and Community Relations. 5. Coordinate FSILG Office Operations including communications, roster management, event registrations, and awards. 6. Collaborate on strategic initiatives as assigned. 7. Meet with supervisor as appropriate and attend office staff meetings 8. Other duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university Acceptance and enrollment into a Boston-area Master’s program or above with Ability to work well independently and as part of a team Effective written and verbal communication skills Effective organizational, planning, and conceptualization skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Google products, and web-based social media applications Willingness to work nights and weekends Willingness to learn about the fraternal movement and independent living groups at MIT PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Commitment to diversity and social justice Participation in a master’s program with a focus on Educational Leadership/Higher Education/College Student Personnel, Non-Profit Management, or related field Experience with assessment, research, event planning, advising college students, presenting, facilitating, and/or teaching Interest in advising fraternities and sororities in a future student affairs position Demonstrated leadership as a member or professional staff member of a social Greek-lettered organization ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The time commitment for this position will be approximately 10 - 20 hours per week for an academic year-round appointment (August 8, 2016 – May 26, 2017) with possible renewable for one additional year based on satisfactory performance. Availability during the 9:00 am – 5:00 pm workday, dependent on academic course load of the candidate, is preferred. Some night and weekend opportunities may exist for additional hands-on work with student groups. Compensation will be $16.00/hour and negotiable professional development support.
