Dublin Core (DC) v oorziet in e e n e e n v o u d ig e g e s t a n d a a r d is e e r d e s e t van e le m e n te n die 'd i n g e n ' zo
beschrijv en d a t ze online te r u g t e v inden zijn. DC w o rd t z e e r veel g e b ru ik t om digitaal m ate ria a l te
beschrijv en zoals t e k s t, b e e ld e n , video, geluid, websites,... De t e besch rijven 'd in g e n ' w ord en hier
v e r d e r 'r e s o u r c e s ' g e n o e m d . T o e p a ssin g e n van DC m a k e n v a a k g e b ru ik v a n XML- of RDFs tru c tu re n .
De D C -stan d a a rd b e s t a a t uit tw e e niveaus:
S im p le Dublin Core b e v a t 15 e le m e n te n : co ntribu to r, c o v e ra g e , c re a to r, d a t e , de scription,
fo rm a t, la n g u a g e , identifier, publisher, relation, rights, so u rc e , s u b je c t, title en typ e.
Q ualified Dublin Core v o e g t hier 3 e le m e n te n a a n to e (a u d ie n c e , p r o v e n a n c e en rights holder),
e n vo orziet in e e n verfijning v a n d e D C -elem en ts: d e qualifiers. Het principe bij h e t specificeren
v a n d e D C -e lem e n te n (h e t D um b-D ow n Principle) ste lt d a t e e n to e p a s s in g die d e specificatie bij h e t
D C -elem en t niet 'b e g rijp t', d e z e qualifier m o e t k u n n e n n e g e r e n e n h e t D C -elem en t zelf m o e t
k u n n en b e h a n d e le n alsof h e t e e n unqualified (b re d e r) e le m e n t zou zijn.
Qualified Dublin Core b e v a t bo ve n d ien e e n a a n ta l 'E ncoding S c h e m e s' die e e n D C elem en t op e e n
specifieke m a n ie r k un nen definiëren. Deze s c h e m a 's k u nn en w oo rd en lijsten zijn, th e s a u ri,
n o ta tie re g e ls , lijsten van to e g e la t e n w a a r d e n , e n z o v o o rt. Een m e t a d a t a w a a r d e die in e e n

2. Mapping van de sectorspecifieke m e ta d a ta sta n d a a rd e n
A lgem een w erd g e s tr e e f d n a a r e e n m a pp in g v a n alle v e ld e n / e le m e n t e n van d e ve rschillende
s t a n d a a r d e n n a a r de DC (Qualified) e le m e n te n . De re d e n h iervo or is d a t h e t binnen elke s e c to r
m ogelijk m o e t blijven o m m e t a d a t a in t e v o e re n v o lg en s de eig en specifieke v e r e is te n en
granu lariteit. Indien m e n enkel zou o p te re n v o o r h e t m a p p e n van D C -e le m e n te n n a a r specifieke
c o re -v e ld en of e le m e n te n binnen ie d e re s e c to r s ta n d a a r d , d a n zou e r o n h e rro e p e lijk inform atie
verloren g a a n (onvolledige invulling, v e r k e e r d e in te r p r e ta tie bij d e k e u ze v a n h e t invoerveld, ...).
De m e ta d a ta die uiteindelijk via d e m a pping in D C-records te r e c h tk o m e n (en g e to o n d w o rd e n ), zijn

Mountain Division, Mountain Training Group during winter training exercise designed to test
the men's readiness for winter conditions in the mountains by having them ski from Leadville
to Aspen, Colorado. According to the photographer's caption, this was probably taken on the
morning of the second day near Mount Champion.

<p>In this one page autograph signed letter, January 10, 1826, Thomas Jefferson, Monticello,
Virginia, writes to Edward A. Turpin, enclosing a copy of the laws and construction of the
University of Virginia and a
notice of the terms of board and tuition, and expressing disappointment at not seeing Turpin
during his return to Albemarle County in the spring.

<p>Jefferson's comments show the obvious pleasure he took in both professors and students at
his University, "Could you now visit our neighborhood you would see our University in a very
different state from what
it was when you were here. We have been very fortunate in the selection of the Professors
which we received from abroad. They are men of the highest qualifications in point of science,
and in character correct and
amiable. Before the vacation we had 120 students, at first a little unruly, but soon set to
rights and latterly perfect examples of good order and application."
