I felt like I had to compare them to themselves at the midterm and end of the semester, and their knowledge definitely progressed. But rating them in the 3 column would not mean the same thing as rating HA 203 students in the 3 column. Do you think maybe we need to reconsider comparing classes in the future? Maybe we should assess each individual course? BI 330 - Laboratory Virginia Cowen Included are data for 29 students who were still enrolled at midterm and 26 who remained through the final exam. I have found it to be most valuable to help the students focus on a weekly basis. • • • • • The syllabus was visited weekly The goals of the current class were repeated, along with long-term goals that form the big picture. Students were asked weekly if they were successfully carrying over the information from Myology to their hands-on classes. Students who had challenges with English, as well as students who found the material challenging, were encouraged to attend tutoring and also to get the accompanying CD and/or DVD to their text, where the author palpates muscle origins, insertions and actions. In this way, repetition of the material was encouraged, students with language challenges were encouraged to repeat the words with the author and/or record themselves repeating the muscles groups. When asked if they had found this helpful, they said that they did. The Practicum rubric was briefly covered. The intention was to have students begin thinking of the big picture and to further emphasize the importance of the current class and carryover from previous classes. Practicum I • • Students were encouraged early on to discuss and list what they believed it took to be successful in clinic. After a short discussion I informed the class that a rubric would be created with these goals. I believe this helped the students focus and prioritize. Students were asked to reflect on what advice they would share with their lower classmen to be successful in Practicum I. I feel this helped them to focus and evaluate their own performance and to set priorities. I also believe that this increased their confidence by enabling them to visualize how far they had come. It is important that they become critical thinkers and independent practitioners.
