Assessment Results Evaluation
Midterm and Final assignment: Students will submit CD’s of their work in AR 473, as for my other classes, must utilize skills necessary to meet several of the above listed QCC
Educational Objectives as well as the above listed Curricular Objectives. In our
Departmental Learning Outcomes, we break these skills down into two main categories: form and content. “Form” refers to the primarily formal aspects of putting together a college-level and professional presentation of their work on CD at Midterm and Final.
Thus, students must exhibit the four following sets of skills in order to get a high grade on their work:
1.
Proper use of grammar, syntax in speaking about visual work
2.
Knowledge of resolution and how to work with high resolution files and make duplicate files that are optimized for the internet
3.
Understanding of all selection methods and use of layer masks
4.
Learn how to resort a badly damaged photograph
Students need to follow instructions. A Handout sheet is given to students telling them what they need to submit for their midterm and final. Many need to follow directions and represent their work in a professional manner. Attendance is key, we build on out skills,
Student’s who miss too many or early classes place themselves at a disadvantage, missing valuable content.
Our students are from the most diverse county in the world: Queens. This diverse adds to the difference of cultures we have in this community. Sometimes this diversity is also about skills. A byproduct of open enrollment also means that anyone with a High School
Diploma or equivalency is accepted into a CUNY College. This sometimes contributes to the diversity of our student body. While we are an Art and Design Department, this is not an Art School. My goal is to teach my students to have them learn these skills so they may compete in the work force or continue their education to a Bachelors degree. I like our students. They are real; often they are the first in their families to go to college. Often my students have complicated lives, where college is just one aspect of their lives, often they have families, family responsibility and jobs,
Sub categories that are important in our studies are:
1.
Ability to articulate visual literacy
2.
Knowledge of resolution
3.
Ability to choose selection methods and work with layer masks
4.
Restoration of damaged photograph
It is always an uphill battle to develop a visual literacy. Choosing studies in a visual area one enters a language that is more studio less academic. Students need help in understanding resolution and the difference between downloading an image form the web and scanning or acquiring a digital image. Sometimes it is simply easier or lazy to download an image than the other higher resolution input. The use of layer masks allow for the ability to hide or reveal parts of an image, which may be changed. Students generally do well in restoring an image.
Many of our students are engaged in their studies. This class: AR-473 is the study of
Photoshop. This is an important software, that all have to understand and learn as a foundation to any digital area of study.
2. My Final Exam: is their submitted CD which challenges students from multiple perspectives. In my 14 years of teaching at Queensborough. I am please with the dialogue which this class permits in the study of software.

The General Education objectives this project speaks to are:
1. communicate effectively through reading, writing, listening and speaking
The first part of this assignment is to write what is wrong with their photo (ie. if it is torn, discolored, or stained etc.). This permits a written way to articulate and communicate effectively.
5. integrate knowledge and skills in their program of study
They are Digital Art and Design students. During their career they will encounter some images that they will need to enhance or restore. Photoshop is a standard in software’s and is the foundation of many digital careers.
10.
apply aesthetic and intellectual criteria in the evaluation or creation of works in the humanities or the arts
This is the process part of the class, where they restore an image with the skills and tools they have learned.
Action Plan
I continue to develop myself as an artist and a teacher and ways of reaching our students.
There is only gain here. In this project I will make sure they write what the problem is with the image before they do anything to it. I will also insist that students utilize adjustment layers and clipping paths as methods of adjusting values. Despite that they are given handouts, they need to be more closely supervised. I also find many do not bring in any image for this restoration project. So I need to supply them with an image. I have told them from the first day of class about this assignment which comes toward the end of the semester. I also say that most people have a family photo that needs to be restored. I instruct them to bring in three so they may speak to their instructor and make the best choice as to how to proceed. I say if they do not have a messed photo, maybe their boyfriend or girlfriend families have one. I say their in-laws will love them for this, and that holidays are coming and this would make a great gift.
