Accelerated Learning Program Information -‐ Fall 2016 http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/alp What is ALP? ALP stands for Accelerated Learning Program. In the ALP model, students with only one remedial need in reading or writing can enroll concurrently in an upper level writing (BE112) or an upper level reading (BE122) and English 101. Because the English 101 course that ALP students take is connected to a specific BE112/122 course, ALP students will get the support they need to succeed in English 101 as they develop their writing/reading skills and prepare to take the CATW/ACT. The goal is to give students the opportunity to complete in one semester what normally takes two. In order to succeed in the program, students who enroll must be highly motivated and willing to complete intensive assignments. What are the benefits of ALP? ALP allows students still in need of passing the CATW/ACT to take English 101, a course that is credit-‐bearing and that fulfills a general education requirement. ALP classes are a little smaller than other classes, creating a strong class community and allowing students a lot of time to work one-‐on-‐one with their instructor. In addition, ALP students have two opportunities during the semester to take the CATW/ACT, in order to ensure that students have a passing grade in English 101 and have passed the CATW/ACT by the end of the semester. Who is eligible for ALP? ALP is open to ESL and Native-‐English Speaking (NES) students. Even though ALP BE courses are listed as BE112 and BE122, ESL and NES students may register. No faculty recommendation is needed. Eligible Students for the Writing ALP: • Incoming students who received a CATW score of 46-‐55 and have completed their reading requirement • Current students who have completed BE111/203 and have successfully completed their reading requirement Eligible Students for the Reading ALP: • Incoming students who received an ACT score of 60-‐69 and have completed their writing requirement • Current students who have completed BE121/225 and have successfully completed their writing requirement How can I register? Eligible students may register with their advisor. Students may also register in H-‐239 with Jose Holguin, the Academic Literacy Advisor (718-‐281-‐5558). FALL 2016 ALP Courses In the fall of 2016, we will offer eight Writing ALP courses and five Reading ALP courses. Eligible students may enroll in these courses with their advisor or with Jose Holguin (Mon-‐Fri, 10am-‐12pm in the ALLC, H-‐239) once the fall registration period begins. We recommend that you take this sheet with you when you meet with your advisor. What is the enrollment cap for Fall 2016 ALP courses? The enrollment cap for the fall ALP-‐designated BE112/122 courses is 14 students; however, there will be an additional 10 students who are traditionally eligible for ENGL 101 in the ALP-‐designated ENGL 101 courses. See the other side of this handout for a list of fall ALP Courses.
