To satisfy the minimum requirements for this course, you should be able to:
Explain the following basic chemical principles:
• the differences between: a) substances and mixtures,
•
• b) elements and compounds,
c) heterogeneous and homogenous mixtures (Pg. 7),
d) atoms and molecules (Pg. 8)(Prob. 1-16).
•
the characteristics of the three states of matter (Pg. 9)
Use math to solve chemistry problems. Examples include being able to:
• determine the number of significant figures in a measured quantity and know how to
express a measured or calculated quantity using the correct number of significant figures
(Pg. 19, Prob. 1-36)
•
know the difference between accuracy and precision (Pg. 23).
•
convert between units using dimensional analysis (Pg. 23, Prob. 1-40).
•
perform calculations involving density (Pg. 14, Prob. 1.22)
