Introduction

A survey of the manufacturing employment opportunities reveals that there is a strong need for personnel with advanced manufacturing skills. Available positions include setup and process personnel, equipment operators, CNC programmers and technology managers.

The analytical nature of the required skills makes it difficult to develop them with on-the-job training as a sole source. The programs offered at Queensborough

Community College (QCC) are ideally suited to provide the technical training required. The primary purpose of our programs is to prepare our students for immediate employment and job advancement upon completion.

In this sourcebook, we will explore the basics of CNC, showing you what is involved with using these sophisticated machine tools. Our goal is to explain to you how CNC works and what role it plays in improving our lives.

Our objective is to give you a working knowledge of CNC technology. While our main focus will be on the two most popular forms of CNC machine tools

(machining centers and turning centers), the concepts can be applied to virtually any kind of CNC machine.

3

What is CNC?

Numerical Control (NC) has been used in the industry for over 50 years.

Simply put, Numerical Control is a method of automatically operating a manufacturing machine based on a code of letters, numbers, and special characters.

A complete set of coded instructions for executing an operation is called a program.

The program is translated into corresponding electrical signals for input to motors that run the machine. The program is delivered to the control via a punched tape.

A Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine is a NC machine with the added feature of an on-board computer. The on-board computer is often referred to as the Machine Control Unit (MCU). The machine functions are controlled by the electronic elements built in into to controller. The MCU usually has an alphanumeric keyboard for direct or Manual Data Input (MDI) of part programs.

Today, computer numerical control (CNC) machines are found almost everywhere, from small job shops in rural communities to Fortune 500 companies in large urban areas. Truly, there is hardly a facet of manufacturing that is not in some way touched by what these innovative machine tools can do.

4

Why learn CNC?

Everyone involved in the manufacturing environment should be well aware of what is possible with these sophisticated machine tools.

The design engineer, for example, must possess enough knowledge of CNC to perfect dimensioning and tolerancing techniques for workpieces to be machined on

CNC machines.

The tool engineer must understand CNC in order to design fixtures and cutting tools for use with CNC machines.

Quality control people should understand the CNC machine tools used within their company in order to plan quality control and statistical process control accordingly.

Production control personnel should be abreast of their company's CNC technology in order to make realistic production schedules.

Managers, foremen, and team leaders should understand CNC well enough to communicate intelligently with fellow workers.

It goes without saying that CNC programmers, setup people, operators, and others working directly with the CNC equipment must have an extremely good understanding of this technology.

5

What are the benefits of CNC?

The first benefit offered by all forms of CNC machine tools is improved automation. The operator intervention related to producing parts can be reduced or eliminated. Many CNC machines can run unattended during their entire machining cycle, freeing the operator to do other tasks. This gives the CNC user several side benefits including reduced operator fatigue, fewer mistakes caused by human error, and consistent and predictable machining time for each part. Since the machine will be running under program control, the skill level required of the CNC operator

(related to basic machining practice) is also reduced as compared to a machinist producing workpieces with conventional machine tools.

The second major benefit of CNC technology is consistent and accurate workpieces. Today's CNC machines boast almost unbelievable accuracy and repeatability specifications. This means that once a program is verified, two, ten, or one thousand identical parts can be easily produced with precision and consistency.

A third benefit offered by most forms of CNC machine tools is flexibility.

Since these machines are run from programs, running a different part is almost as easy as loading a different program. Once a program has been verified and executed for one production run, it can be easily recalled the next time the part is to be run.

This leads to yet another benefit, fast changeovers. Since these machines is easy to setup and run, and since programs can be easily loaded, they allow very short setup time.

6

What Does a CNC Specialist/Programmer Do?

Since the CNC Specialist/Programmer decides how the item will be produced, he must be thoroughly familiar with different aspect of manufacturing. Here are some steps a programmer must go thru:

Study part drawing(s);

Decide on the methods and sequence of operations;

Choose a CNC machine;

Decide on the methods of holding the part while machining;

Select the tools for machining the part;

Calculate cutting conditions (feeds, speeds) based on the material being cut;

Write a program (manually or by using a CAD/CAM system);

Prepare set-up and machining documentation for the production personnel;

Transfer the program to the MCU;

Assist (if needed) the set-up person in setting up and debugging the program:

Work with the inspection department to assure the quality;

Assist production personnel if problems arise.

CNC machining is not just programming

Tooling Scheduling

Documentation

Work holding

Process planning

Manual programming

Tool path simulation

7

Skills required for CNC?

A CNC Specialist/Programmer must be able to:

¾ do process planning;

¾ do scheduling;

¾ design tooling;

¾ create work holding devices;

¾ write documentation;

¾ to handle troubleshooting technical problems that happen;

¾ learn any skills that are needed.

He must have:

¾ CNC machine tool programming experience;

¾ Computer language programming experience;

¾

CAD/CAM programming software experience (Knowledge of Mastercam a

PLUS!).

He must be:

¾ Creative and effective problem-solving skills;

¾

Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and as a team member;

¾

Detailed oriented.

¾ Quick learner.

And last, but not the least: have a POSITIVE ATTITUTE.

How Does One Pay for College

You and your family are responsible for your college costs. If you qualify. financial aid can help you pay for tuition, room, board, transportation, books, supplies, activity fees, and personal expenses. If you need help paying for college, you may be eligible to receive financial aid. Financial aid is available from the New

York State government, the federal government, from colleges, and from private sources such as businesses or community organizations.

Grants - Financial aid that does not have to be paid back-based on your demonstrated financial need. New York’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is the nation’s largest state grant program. TAP is based on student/family net taxable income.

Scholarships and Awards - Aid that does not have to be paid back. Awards may be based on your test scores, grades, special talents such as sports or the arts, outstanding leadership qualities, or your community service record.

Loans - Money you borrow that must be paid back with interest. Student loans are available at a low-interest rate. Some loans are based on financial need; other loans help cover the family’s expected contribution toward college.

Work-Study Jobs - On-campus or off-campus work, based on financial need, that helps you earn money to meet college costs.

Other Programs - Tax credits, savings programs, payment plans and other programs are available to help you pay for college.

Your college will determine the types of need-based aid for which you qualify and will suggest other programs if appropriate. First, you must be accepted for admission and apply for financial aid. Your college can also tell you about the programs which are not based on financial need.

9

How To Apply for Financial Aid

If you want to receive government or college-based financial aid, you will have to apply using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and possibly other application forms. Some colleges may have their own financial aid application. Make sure you complete all required applications. Check with your high school counselor or the financial aid office at the college you wish to attend. You can apply online by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSA applications for next year-the year you are attending college-are available by December of the preceding year.

Complete your applications. Assemble the following information:

• Previous year federal and State income tax forms for you, your parents, and your spouse.

• W-2 forms, or end-of-year pay stubs (if estimating income).

• Records of untaxed income, for example: child support and untaxed income from such agencies as Social Services, Social Security, and the Veterans’ Administration.

• Bank account balances; list of stocks, bonds, and other assets; and the estimated value and mortgage balance of your other real estate (not including your home).

You can start anytime by applying for a Federal Student Aid Personal

Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov. Your PIN will arrive in about one week. Then you can complete and submit the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or use the paper FAFSA to apply. You can also link to this from www.hesc.org. If you are a New York State resident applying to a college in New York State, you will be able to complete your TAP Application online located at the end of your FAFSA or

HESC will send you a pre-printed Express TAP Application (ETA) after you submit

10

your paper FAFSA.

Meet the deadline. Most colleges have one. Check with each college to get its deadline. To meet the filing deadline, you may file your financial aid applications using estimated income if your tax forms have not been completed. Accurate, estimated income figures may be taken from end-of-year pay stubs or W-2 forms.

Give yourself plenty of time to fill out the applications accurately and submit them by the deadline date. Ask the professionals. If you have questions, contact the financial aid administrator at the college you plan to attend, or your high school counselor. These professionals have the latest information and are available to assist you.
