To help ensure excellence in teaching and learning, Queensborough engages in on-going assessment, promotes research on community college pedagogy, and supports scholarly accomplishments and professional advancement. (Excerpt from the QCC mission statement: http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/about/mission.html) The Fall 2013 student enrollment was 16,291 students out of which 14,354 were degree and certificate seeking students. Sixty-seven percent of the degree and certificate seeking students were enrolled fulltime. The curricula with the highest enrollments were Liberal Arts and Sciences (A.A.), Business Administration (A.S.), Criminal Justice (A.S.), Health Sciences (A.S.), and Liberal Arts and Sciences (Mathematics & Science) (A.S.). A total of 1,937 students were non-degree. The majority of this group were high school students who were part of the College Now program, which enrolls high school students in college courses. Queensborough is a very diverse campus with students from 143 countries. The majority live in Queens. Thirty-eight percent report speaking a language other than English at home. Queensborough is an open-admissions campus; over seventy percent of the incoming freshmen require at least one remedial course. In the academic year 2012-13, 64 percent of all first-time full-time freshmen and 48 percent of all degree students received some form of financial grant aid. The six-year graduation rate for the Fall 2007 cohort is 28.7 percent from Queensborough with an additional 8.8 percent that graduated elsewhere in CUNY or outside CUNY. This brings the overall six year graduation rate to 37.5 percent. QCC graduates usually go on to other CUNY senior colleges like Queens College and Baruch College, but also enroll in non-CUNY colleges, e.g., SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, Adelphi, Cornell, NYU, and St. John’s. QCC graduated 1,968 students in the academic year 2012-13. The curricula with the most degrees were Liberal Arts and Sciences (681), Business Administration (298), and Criminal Justice (146). Fifty-eight percent of the full-time faculty at Queensborough have earned doctoral degrees. Another 21 percent have terminal degrees in such fields as nursing, engineering, and the performing and visual arts. Student learning at Queensborough is supported by the Academies, the academic support centers, honors courses, student research programs, learning communities, academic service learning projects, collaborative assignments and projects, required writing-intensive courses, diversity and global learning, undergraduate research, and the common intellectual experience. 1 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 A. QCC Enrollment Queensborough Community College has seen significant enrollment growth, especially since the economic downturn of 2008. After an enrollment peak in fall 2011, fall 2013 had the second largest enrollment in the history of the college. A total of 16,291 undergraduate students were enrolled in 34 associate degree programs, seven certificate programs, and for-credit programs such as College Now. Dual/Joint Transfer degree programs more than doubled enrollment from 677 in fall 2008 to 1,867 in fall 2013. Transfer degree programs overall saw an increase in enrollment. The Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAAA) program is by far the largest with 5,464 students enrolled in fall 2013, many of whom are enrolled in prenursing courses. The Business Administration transfer program (BT-AS) has seen steady enrollment over the years and is the second largest program at QCC with a total of 1,659 students in fall 2013. The fastest growing transfer degree program is the Criminal Justice program (CJ-AS). Over the past five years, career degree programs have seen a decline in enrollments with the exception of the Computer Engineering Technology program (CT-AAS), the Mechanical Engineering Technology program (MT-AAS), and the Medical Office Assistant program (MA-AAS), which have recently seen growth in enrollment. Finally, we saw an increase in certificate students from 58 in fall 2012 to 83 in the fall of 2013. Over five years, however, certificate program enrollment is less than half what it was in fall 2008. Fall 2013 has seen an increase in the percentage of full-time associate degree students from 66 percent in fall 2012 to 67 percent in fall 2013. Ten percent of first-time freshmen were part-time in fall 2013 compared to 8.5 percent in fall 2012. We saw a 3.7 percent growth in headcounts from fall 2012 to fall 2013. More female students were part-time than male students in fall 2013. 2 Enrollment¹ by Curriculum Spring 2008 to Fall 2013 QCC Code AF-AS BY-AS CJ-AS LE-AA NH-AAS SF-AS Sub total AM-AS BT-AS EH-AS FA-AS HS-AS LA-AA LS-AS PE-AS WE-AA Sub total BA-AAS BL-AAS BM-AAS BS-AAS CT-AAS DA-AAS DD-AAS DP-AAS EM-AAS ET-AAS KM-AAS MA-AAS ME-AAS MT-AAS NP-AAS NS-AAS PL-AAS TC-AAS TM-AAS TX-AAS Sub total Program DUAL/JOINT TRANSFER DEGREE QCC/John Jay Dual/Joint Accounting for Forensic Accounting QCC/York Dual/Joint Biotechnology QCC/John Jay Dual/Joint Criminal Justice QCC/QC Dual/Joint Education QCC/Hunter-Bellevue Dual/Joint Nursing Nursing QCC/John Jay Dual/Joint Science for Forensics Fall '09 Sp '10 Fall '10 Sp '11 Fall '11 Sp '12 Fall '12 Sp '13 Fall '13 A.S./B.S. New Student Profile The college enrolled 3,396 first-time freshmen (3,381 degree and 15 certificate seeking first-time freshmen) and 899 advanced transfer students (890 degree and 9 certificate seeking advanced transfer students) in fall 2013. Freshmen were 50.5 percent male and primarily full-time (90 percent). Only 10 percent of freshmen were part-time in fall 2013. Queensborough Community College is one of the most diverse campuses nation wide. Among freshmen, Hispanic students represented the largest ethnic group (30 percent), followed by an equal representation of Asian and Black students (22 percent each) and 18 percent White students. Six percent of freshmen were international students in fall 2013. Over 44 percent of the fall 2013 freshmen spoke a language other than English at home. Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Bengali, and Urdu were the most prevalent non-English languages among freshmen in fall 2013. The percentage of first-time freshmen entering with a GED as compared to a traditional high school diploma has declined from 9 percent in fall 2008 to 2 percent in fall 2013. Over sixty-five percent of freshmen (with a high school diploma) were New York City high school graduates and 51 percent of advanced transfer students came from a CUNY or SUNY school. Sixty-eight percent of fall 2013 freshmen were required to take a remedial math course, 22 percent remedial writing, and 22 percent remedial reading. 12 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 Profile of New Students Fall 2008 to Fall 2013 Associate Degree and Certificate Seeking Fall ’08 Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 First-Time Freshmen¹ Female Male 2,744 53.8% 46.2% 3,705 51.2% 48.8% 3,209 51.9% 48.1% 3,934 49.7% 50.3% 3,335 50.1% 49.9% 3,396 49.5% 50.5% Full-Time Part-Time 86.8% 13.2% 87.1% 12.9% 90.7% 9.3% 84.5% 15.5% 91.5% 8.5% 90.0% 10.0% 254 9% 339 9% 171 5% 184 5% 116 3% 68 2% Fall ’08 Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 55.6 74.1 95.8 21% 8% 31% 54.3 73.8 97.4 21% 7% 23% 53.9 74.5 96.3 23% 8% 13% 54.2 74.4 96 23% 9% 18% 54 75.2 96.7 28% 10% 17% 54.5 75.6 97.2 29% 12% 23% Fall ’08 Fall ’09 Fall ’10 2.47 3.00 2.45 3.00 2.53 3.18 2.48 3.00 2.59 3.27 2.50 3.00 Fall ’08 Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 Freshmen with GED % of all First-Time Freshmen High School Average (CAA) Minimum Median Maximum Have a H.S. average over 80 Have a H.S. average over 85 % without CAA Median First Semester GPA First-Time Freshmen¹ Advanced Transfer Fall ’11 Fall ’12² Fall ’13 Advanced Transfer from: CUNY SUNY Other 853 1102 610 1125 734 899 40.7% 14.3% 45.0% 41.8% 12.1% 46.1% 37.0% 10.8% 52.1% 39.6% 9.8% 50.6% 39.5% 8.0% 52.5% 41.4% 9.9% 48.7% Race and Ethnicity³ Fall ’08 Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 1% 18% 24% 27% 22% 8% 1% 18% 26% 27% 21% 7% 1% 20% 20% 29% 23% 7% 1% 21% 24% 28% 21% 6% 1% 21% 21% 30% 19% 7% 1% 22% 22% 30% 18% 6% 0% 24% 26% 20% 23% 8% 0% 19% 28% 21% 25% 7% 0% 26% 20% 17% 27% 9% 1% 23% 27% 25% 21% 3% 0% 22% 25% 26% 20% 7% 1% 23% 28% 25% 19% 5% First-Time Freshmen¹ Am. Source: CUNY IRDB 17 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 C. Student Demographics Queensborough Community College is one of the most diverse colleges in the nation. Our students come from 143 countries and speak 84 different languages; Twenty-six percent of the students were born outside the USA. They come from every corner of the globe including Asia, North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Australia. The top five non-English native languages are Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Bengali, and Urdu. Thirty percent of all degree students -- national and international -- are Hispanic, twenty-five percent are Asian or Pacific Islander, twenty-five percent are Black, and nineteen percent are White (CUNY Internal Count, page 20). In fall 2013, the average age of first-time freshmen was 19.5 years while the average age for all associate degree seeking students was 23.2. Only 21 percent of our degree students were 25 or older. Fifty-three percent of degree students were female in fall 2013. Among first-time freshmen, male and female students were represented equally. Certificate students are primarily female and significantly older than associate degree seeking students. The vast majority of our students are New York City residents and most live in Queens. About 18 percent of students commute from other boroughs and surrounding counties. 18 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 STUDENTS BY COUNTRY OF BIRTH - FALL 2013 ♦ 143 countries of birth, ♦ 84 native languages COUNTRY NUMBER Albania Algeria Angola Anguilla Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Armenia Australia Austria Azerbaijan Bangladesh Barbados Belize Benin Bolivia Brazil British West Indies Bulgaria Burkina Faso Burma Cambodia Cameroon Canada Chile China Colombia Congo Costa Rica Cote D'Ivoire Croatia Cuba Czechoslovakia Dominica Dominican Republic Dutch Antilles Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Ethiopia Finland France Gabon Gambia Georgia Germany Ghana Greece Grenada 13 2 1 1 2 12 7 3 3 2 198 7 1 1 5 13 1 1 2 1 1 4 15 7 690 251 4 2 8 1 5 2 6 206 3 201 4 40 1 1 4 2 1 2 3 29 10 9 COUNTRY Guam Guatemala Guinea Guyana Haiti Honduras Hong Kong Hungary India Indonesia Iran Iran (Islamic Repub Iraq Ireland Israel Italy Jamaica Japan Jordan Kazakhstan Kenya Kosovo Kuwait Latvia Lebanon Liberia Macedonia Malaysia Mali Mauritius Mexico Mongolia Montenegro Morocco Mozambique Myanmar Nepal Netherlands Niger Nigeria Northern Mariana Is Pakistan Palestine Panama Peru Philippines NUMBER 1 25 8 338 223 18 46 1 177 5 7 2 2 2 24 11 337 9 2 4 4 1 4 1 1 4 2 11 3 1 66 2 4 5 1 7 22 1 2 55 1 152 1 11 82 85 Poland 37 Portugal 1 COUNTRY Puerto Rico Romania Russia Russian Federation Rwanda Saint Lucia Saudi Arabia Senegal Serbia Sierra Leone Singapore Slovakia Slovenia Solomon Islands Somalia South Africa South Korea Spain Sri Lanka St. Lucia St. Vincent and The Suriname Swaziland Sweden Switzerland Taiwan Tajikistan Tanzania Thailand Togo Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey Uganda Ukraine United Arab Emirate United Kingdom Uruguay USA Uzbekistan Venezuela Vietnam Yemen Yugoslavia Zaire Zimbabwe Not reported Total # of Students NUMBER 18 11 17 3 1 2 7 1 1 4 3 5 1 1 2 3 244 3 16 5 6 13 1 1 1 42 7 3 2 4 137 4 9 1 7 1 3 4 5260 35 21 5 5 2 2 7 6,728 16,291 : Top 10 contries: USA, China, Guyana, Jamaica, Colombia, South Korea, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Ecuardor, Bangladesh 26% report to be born outside the USA. 38% report speaking a language other than English at home. Academic Services The Kurt R. Schmeller library continues to see an increase in library instructions, reference questions, and database searches and offered more library hours per week in 2013 than the year before. Programs in Continuing Education and Workforce Development continue to be strong and offerings have increased in the areas of remedial programs, community service programs, vocational grant programs, and in recreational programs. 26 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 Kurt R. This service was initiated in October 2006. The drop in the patron count during 2007-08 is attributed to two things: increased availability of library resources online and loss of library space, especially the temporary loss of a silent study area. In addition, the department was awarded a Perkins Title V grant to support career readiness and job placement services. The Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development continued to expand its career related offerings in Allied Healthcare and also added a Personal Trainer Certification to its roster of professional programs. In the fall of 2013, the department assumed oversight of all campus-wide pre-college programming. Project Prize/Liberty Partnership and Career Clusters came under its leadership, as have CUNY-wide NYC DOE collaborative programs such as College Now, College Focus and others. Round 6 of the NYSED 21st Century Community Learning Center grant was also awarded to the department. Tuition based vocational and avocational/recreational/social programs were consolidated due to limited fiscal and facility resources and to allow for the increase in grant opportunities and awards. Source: Office of Contiuning Education and Workforce Development 28 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 E. Grades, Academic Standing, Retention and Graduation The college-wide grade distribution is very stable at Queensborough. In the past seven years, semester grades showed the following pattern: about 30 percent of students received As, roughly 40 percent received grades between B+ and C, and 27 to 30 percent received grades below a C. Students do better in freshmen composition courses than in gateway mathematics courses. This might be a reflection of incoming students' stronger remedial needs in mathematics. The average number of credits earned by first-time, full-time freshmen is rising. While the fall 2006 freshmen cohort earned 14.4 non-equated credits on average in one year, the fall 2012 freshmen cohort earned 17.2 non-equated credits in the same time period. Twenty-four percent of fall 2012 first-time freshman took one or more courses in the summer after entry. Transfer students are more likely to take summer courses than first-time freshmen. Of the fall 2012 entering advanced transfers, 30.5 percent took one or more courses in the summer after entry. The one-year retention rate of the fall 2012 first-time, full-time freshman cohort was 70.9 percent. An additional 2 percent transferred to another college within CUNY and 3.4 percent transferred to a college outside CUNY by fall 2013. The minority retention gap decreased for the fall 2012 cohort. While the oneyear retention rate of underrepresented students (Black, Hispanic, Native American) was 7.4 percentage points lower for the fall 2011 cohort, the fall 2012 cohort showed a difference of 5.9 percentage points between underrepresented and non-underrepresented student groups. The one-year retention rate of male students was 6.6 percentage points lower compared to the rate of the female students for the fall 2011 cohort. This gender gap has widened slightly to 6.9 percentage points for the fall 2012 cohort. The three-year graduation rate at QCC has increased from 16.2 percent for the fall 2009 first-time full-time freshman cohort to 18.5 percent for the fall 2010 cohort. Thirty-one percent of the fall 2010 cohort was still enrolled at QCC or another CUNY college after three years and another 9 percent had transferred to a college outside CUNY. The four-year graduation rate for the fall 2009 first-time full-time freshman cohort was 23.5 percent, the highest four-year rate in the last decade. The six-year graduation rate for fall 2007 first-time full-time freshmen was 28.7 percent. An additional 8.8 percent graduated from another college (within or outside CUNY), which brings the overall six-year graduation rate to 37.5 percent for the fall 2007 first-time full-time freshmen cohort. 29 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 Course Grade Analysis Fall and Spring Terms -- Excludes Equated Credit Course Grades Fall Semester Grades A 19% 19% 19% 19% 20% 20% 20% 11% 11% 11% 11% 11% 12% 12% B+ 10% 10% 10% 10% 9% 10% 10% B 11% 11% 11% 11% 10% 10% 11% B- 8% 6% 7% 5% 7% 9% 6% 7% 4% 7% 8% 6% 7% 5% 7% 9% 6% 7% 4% 7% 8% 6% 7% 5% 7% 8% 6% 7% 4% 7% 9% 6% 7% 4% 7% C+ 18% 15% 16% 16% 17% 16% 14% Fall '07 Fall '08 Fall '09 Fall '10 Fall '11 Fall '12 Fall '13 A- C CD+,D & DF/WU Spring Semester Grades A 19% 19% 19% 18% 20% 11% 11% 11% 11% 11% 11% 11% B+ 10% 9% 9% B B- 21% 21% A9% 10% 10% 10% 11% 11% 11% 10% 10% 10% 10% 8% 6% 6% 4% 7% 8% 6% 7% 4% 6% 8% 6% 7% 4% 7% 8% 6% 7% 4% 7% 8% 6% 7% 4% 7% 8% 6% 7% 4% 7% 8% 5% 7% 4% 7% 18% 18% 17% 19% 17% 17% 18% Spring '07 Spring '08 Spring '09 Spring '10 Spring '11 Spring '12 Spring '13 C+ C CD+, D & DF/WU Below C Source: CUNY IRDB, CUNYFirst PMP Key Indicator: Percent of students passing with a C or better Fall 2007 Fall 2008 Fall 2009 Fall 2010 Fall 2011 Fall 2012 Fall 2013 Freshman composition Gateway mathematics courses 87.4% 57.8% 87.0% 56.3% 86.6% 57.1% 85.1% 60.3% 83.1% 60.5% 82.3% 65.4% 82.0% 65.4% Source: PMP 2013, CUNY IRDB 30 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 Freshmen and Transfers Taking One or More Courses in the Summer After Entry¹ Fall Cohorts New Student Type N Took Summer Courses % Took Summer Courses 2007 First-Time Freshmen Advanced Transfers 2,200 500 660 171 22.7% 25.9% 2008 First-Time Freshmen Advanced Transfers 2,340 491 643 160 21.0% 24.9% 2009 First-Time Freshmen Advanced Transfers 3,181 762 827 228 24.0% 27.6% 2010 First-Time Freshmen Advanced Transfers 2,731 581 484 127 21.3% 26.2% 2011 First-Time Freshmen Advanced Transfers 3,313 744 834 223 22.5% 26.7% 2012 First-Time Freshmen Advanced Transfers 2,794 669 574 175 23.9% 30.5% ¹ Based on a fall cohort of first-time freshmen and transfers still enrolled in the college of entry the following spring. Source: Registrar Office 36 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 F. Degrees Awarded and Transfer-Out Queensborough Community College granted 1,951 associate degrees and 17 certificates in the academic year 2012-2013 (summer 2012, fall 2012, spring 2013 graduations combined). The programs with the largest numbers of graduates were the Liberal Arts & Sciences program (LA-AA), the Business Administration program (BT-AS), the Criminal Justice program (CJ-AS), the Nursing Science programs (NSAAS and NH-AAS), the math and science focused Liberal Arts & Sciences program (LS-AS), and the Health Sciences program (HS-AS). These programs together granted a total of 1,417 associate's degrees in the academic year 20112-2013. The Health Sciences program (HS-AS) more than doubled the number of degrees awarded and the Criminal Justice program (CJ-AS) nearly doubled the number of degrees awarded from last year. To date, Queensborough Community College has awarded 58,860 degrees and certificates. Eighty percent of 2012-2013 dual/joint program degree graduates (219 graduates) transferred to a senior college (CUNY or outside CUNY) within one year. 70.6 percent of graduates from transfer programs transferred and 43.1 percent of graduates from career programs transferred. Transfer rates were calculated by counting a graduate transferred if he or she had registered in a senior college (CUNY or outside CUNY) in any or all semester(s) of the academic year following the graduation year (for the 2012-2013 graduates, the academic terms were summer 2013, fall 2013, and spring 2014 -- summer only registrations not counted). Thirty-nine percent of all 2012-13 graduates who transferred to a senior school went to Queens College, 15 percent went to a school outside CUNY, 12 percent went to Baruch College, and ten percent went to John Jay. A National Student Clearinghouse search revealed that many QCC students transfer to other schools before earning a degree. Not surprising, most students who transfer without a degree come from the largest programs such as the Liberal Arts and Sciences programs (LA-AA and LS-AS), the Business Administration program (BT-AS), the Health Sciences program (HS-AS), and the Criminal Justice program (CJ-AS). Some of the smaller programs however have proportionally larger percentages of students leaving for another school. For example about 10 percent of the students in the Engineering Science program (PE-AS), the Dual Joint Liberal Arts & Sciences and Education program (LE-AA), and the Business Accounting program (BA-AAS) students transfer to senior colleges before earning an associate degree at QCC. 37 Queensborough Community College, 2013-2014 Degrees Awarded by Program Graduation Years¹ 2006-2007 to 2012-2013 QCC Code Program Degree '06/'07 '07/'08 '08/'09 '09/'10 '10/'11 '11/'12 '12/'13 0 0 32 0 0 0 0 49 0 0 0 0 40 0 0 0 7 38 0 0 0 24 66 0 0 5 83 58 0 0 4 146 50 15 4 32 49 40 45 90 146 219 A.S.
