(Excerpt from the QCC mission statement: http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/about/mission.html) The Fall 2014 student enrollment was 16,182 students out of which 14,197 were degree and certificate seeking students. Sixty-seven percent of the degree and certificate seeking students were enrolled fulltime. The curricula with the highest enrollments were Liberal Arts and Sciences (A.A.), Business Administration (A.S.), Criminal Justice (A.S.), Health Sciences (A.S.), and Liberal Arts and Sciences (Mathematics & Science) (A.S.). A total of 1,985 students were non-degree. The majority of this group were high school students who were part of the College Now program, which enrolls high school students in college courses. Queensborough is a very diverse campus with students from 139 countries. The majority live in Queens. Thirty-seven percent report speaking a language other than English at home. Queensborough is an open-admissions campus; over seventy percent of the incoming freshmen require at least one remedial course. In the academic year 2013-14, 76 percent of all first-time full-time freshmen and 53 percent of all degree students received some form of financial grant aid. The six-year graduation rate for the Fall ’08 cohort was 27% from Queensborough with an additional 9.5 % that graduated elsewhere in CUNY or outside CUNY. This brings the overall six year graduation rate to 36.5%. QCC students usually go on to another CUNY senior college such as Queens College and Baruch College, but also enroll in non-CUNY colleges e.g. SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, Adelphi, Long Island University, NYU, and St. John’s. QCC graduated 1,973 students in the academic year 2013-14. The curricula with the most degrees were Liberal Arts and Sciences (686), Business Administration (315), and Criminal Justice (158). Fifty-seven percent of the full-time faculty at Queensborough have earned doctoral degrees. Another 19 percent have terminal degrees in such fields as nursing, engineering, and the performing and visual arts. 1 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 A. QCC Enrollment In fall 2014 a total of 16,182 undergraduate students were enrolled in 32 associate degree programs, seven certificate programs, and for-credit programs such as College Now at Queensborough Community College. Over two-thirds of all students enroll in a transfer degree program at Queensborough. The Liberal Arts & Sciences (LA-AA) program is by far the largest program with 5,511 students enrolled in fall 2014, many of whom were enrolled in pre-nursing courses. The Business Administration transfer program (BT-AS) is the second largest program at QCC with a total of 1,562 students in fall 2014. Dual Joint Transfer degree programs overall saw an increase in enrollment from 1,867 in fall 2013 to 1,999 in fall 2014. The Criminal Justice (CJ-AS) dual/joint degree program with John Jay College of Criminal Justices is the largest of them with 1,330 students in fall 2014. The Engineering Science transfer degree program (PE-AS) -- a small but demanding program -- has seen a steady increase in enrollment over the past years and had 259 students enrolled in fall 2014, more students than ever before. Fall 2014 also saw an increase in enrollment in a number of career degree programs such as Accounting (BA-AAS), Management (BM-AAS), and several STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs such as the Computer Information Systems program (DP-AAS), the Electronic Engineering program (ET-AAS), and the Mechanical Engineering Technology program (MT-AAS). The enrollment in certificate programs continued to decline in fall 2014. Ninety percent of first-time freshmen were enrolled full-time in fall 2014 and 67 percent of all degree seeking students at Queensborough Community College were enrolled full-time in fall 2014. 2 Enrollment¹ by Curriculum Spring 2009 to Fall 2014 QCC Code AF-AS BY-AS CJ-AS LE-AA NH-AAS NY-AAS SF-AS Sub total AM-AS BT-AS EH-AS FA-AS HS-AS LA-AA LS-AS PE-AS WE-AA Sub total DUAL/JOINT TRANSFER DEGREE QCC/John Jay Dual/Joint Accounting for Forensic Accounting QCC/York Dual/Joint Biotechnology QCC/John Jay Dual/Joint Criminal Justice QCC/QC Dual/Joint Education QCC/Hunter-Bellevue Dual/Joint Nursing QCC/York Nursing (AAS) Dual/Joint Nursing QCC/John Jay Dual/Joint Science for Forensics A.S./B.S. New Student Profile The college enrolled 3,392 first-time freshmen and 1,030 advanced transfer students in fall 2014. Freshmen were 50.1 percent male and primarily full-time (90.1 percent). Only 9.9 percent of freshmen were part-time in fall 2014. Queensborough Community College is one of the most diverse campuses nation-wide. Among freshmen, Hispanic students represent the largest group (31 percent), followed by Black students (25 percent), Asian students (22 percent) and White students (15 percent). Five percent of the freshmen were non-resident alien. Over 43 percent of the fall 2014 freshmen speak a language other than English at home. Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, Creole, and Korean were the most prevalent non-English languages among freshmen in fall 2014. QCC freshmen come from 75 different countries. Eighty-three percent of freshmen (with recorded high school information) were New York City high school graduates and 52.6 percent of advanced transfer students came from a CUNY or SUNY school. Over seventy percent of incoming (matriculated) freshmen were required to enroll in a remedial subject. In fall 2014, 70 percent of freshmen needed remedial mathematics, 27.4 percent remedial writing, and 23.1 percent remedial reading. A relatively small group needed remediation in two (19 percent) or three (12 percent) subjects. In addition, a small number of students with triple (or double) remedial needs are served through CUNY Start, a program for non-matriculated students that started in fall 2011 and enrolled 148 students in fall 2014¹. The CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) enrolled 274 non-matriculated remedial students in Fall 2014 not counted in the Fact Book¹. ¹Data source: CUNY Office of Research, Evaluation & Program Support and the Office of Pre-College, Continuing Education and Workforce Development. 12 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 Profile of New Students Fall 2009 to Fall 2014 Associate Degree and Certificate Seeking Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 Fall '14 First-Time Freshmen¹ Female Male 3,705 51.2% 48.8% 3,209 51.9% 48.1% 3,934 49.7% 50.3% 3,335 50.1% 49.9% 3,396 49.5% 50.5% 3,392 49.9% 50.1% Full-Time Part-Time 87.1% 12.9% 90.7% 9.3% 84.5% 15.5% 91.5% 8.5% 90.0% 10.0% 90.1% 9.9% 339 9% 171 5% 184 5% 116 3% 68 2% 92 3% Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 Fall '14 54.3 73.8 97.4 21% 7% 23% 53.9 74.5 96.3 23% 8% 13% 54.2 74.4 96 23% 9% 18% 54 75.2 96.7 28% 10% 17% 54.5 75.6 97.2 29% 12% 23% 56.2 75.9 97.3 32% 12% 27% Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 Fall '14 2.45 3.00 2.53 3.18 2.48 3.00 2.59 3.27 2.50 3.00 2.35 2.75 Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 Fall '14 Freshmen with GED % of all First-Time Freshmen High School Average (CAA) Minimum Median Maximum Have a H.S. average over 80 Have a H.S. average over 85 % without CAA Median First Semester GPA First-Time Freshmen¹ Advanced Transfer Advanced Transfer from: CUNY SUNY Other 1102 610 1,125 734 899 1030 41.8% 12.1% 46.1% 37.0% 10.8% 52.1% 39.6% 9.8% 50.6% 39.5% 8.0% 52.5% 41.4% 9.9% 48.7% 42.5% 10.1% 47.4% Race and Ethnicity² Fall ’09 Fall ’10 Fall ’11 Fall ’12 Fall ’13 Fall '14 1% 18% 26% 27% 21% 7% 1% 20% 20% 29% 23% 7% 1% 21% 24% 28% 21% 6% 1% 21% 21% 30% 19% 7% 1% 22% 22% 30% 18% 6% 1% 22% 25% 31% 15% 5% 0% 19% 28% 21% 25% 7% 0% 26% 20% 17% 27% 9% 1% 23% 27% 25% 21% 3% 0% 22% 25% 26% 20% 7% 1% 23% 28% 25% 19% 5% 0% 24% 29% 25% 17% 5% First-Time Freshmen¹ Am. Source: CUNY IRDB 17 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 C. Student Demographics Queensborough Community College is one of the most diverse colleges in the nation. Our students come from 139 countries and speak 87 different languages. Twenty-five percent of the students were born outside the USA. They come from every corner of the globe including Asia, North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Australia. The top five non-English native languages are Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Bengali, and Urdu. Thirty percent of all degree and certificate seeking students -- national and international -- are Hispanic, twenty-six percent are Asian or Pacific Islander, twenty-six percent are Black, and eighteen percent are White (CUNY Internal Count, page 20). Most Associate's degree seeking students enter Queensborough right after high school. Thus, the age distribution of students is relatively typical for an undergraduate serving institution with only 21 percent of degree seeking students 25 years or older. Fifty-three percent of degree students were female in fall 2014. Certificate students tend to be female and significantly older than associate's degree seeking students. The vast majority of our students are New York City residents and most live in Queens. About 16 percent of students commute from other boroughs and surrounding counties. 18 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 STUDENTS BY COUNTRY OF BIRTH - FALL 2014 ♦ 139 countries of birth, ♦ 87 native languages COUNTRY NUMBER Afghanistan Albania Algeria Anguilla Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Armenia Australia Austria Azerbaijan Bahamas Bangladesh Barbados Belarus Belize Benin Bolivia Bosnia and Herzegovina Brazil Bulgaria Burkina Faso Cambodia Cameroon Canada Chile China Colombia Congo Congo, The Democratic Costa Rica Cote D'Ivoire Croatia Cuba Cyprus Czech Republic Dominica Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Ethiopia France Gabon Gambia Georgia Germany Ghana Gibraltar 21 13 5 1 1 15 6 2 1 1 2 209 6 2 2 2 7 2 8 3 2 1 2 15 8 650 210 1 2 3 6 2 3 3 2 4 193 193 6 37 2 5 2 2 3 5 32 1 COUNTRY Greece Grenada Guatemala Guinea Guyana Haiti Honduras Hong Kong Hungary India Indonesia Iran (Islamic Republic Iraq Ireland Israel Italy Jamaica Japan Jordan Kazakhstan Kenya Korea, Democratic Korea, Republic of Kuwait Lebanon Liberia Macao Malaysia Mali Malta Mauritania Mauritius Mexico Moldova, Republic of Mongolia Morocco Mozambique Myanmar Nepal Netherlands Netherlands Antilles Niger Nigeria Pakistan Panama Paraguay Peru Philippines NUMBER 9 8 19 6 327 201 20 34 1 167 4 8 1 1 19 7 330 2 1 1 2 1 216 1 1 2 1 10 4 1 1 1 64 1 1 5 1 7 21 1 1 2 64 130 8 6 79 COUNTRY Poland Portugal Puerto Rico Republic of Montenegro Romania Russian Federation Rwanda Saint Kitts and Nevis Saint Lucia Saudi Arabia Sierra Leone Singapore Slovakia Slovenia Somalia South Africa Spain Sri Lanka St Vincent&Grenadines Suriname Swaziland Taiwan Tajikistan Tanzania, United Thailand Togo Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey Turkmenistan Uganda Ukraine United Arab Emirates United Kingdom United States Uruguay Uzbekistan Venezuela Viet Nam Yemen Yugoslavia Zambia Zimbabwe Not Reported Total # of Students NUMBER 31 1 27 4 8 16 1 1 4 3 4 2 2 1 2 2 4 12 8 11 1 28 6 2 1 4 117 3 6 1 1 7 1 7 6,883 3 35 21 4 7 3 3 5 5,314 16,182 73 : Top 10 countries: USA, China, Jamaica, Guyana, South Korea, Colombia, Bangladesh, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador 25% report to be born outside the USA. 37.1% report speaking a language other than English at home. Academic Services The Kurt R. Schmeller library recently saw an increase in circulations, reference questions, patron counts, and number of students receiving library instructions. Starting in 2014, the library lends devices in addition to books. Such devices include calculators, cordless chargers, headphones, DVDs, the scanner key and the key to the group study room. Programs in Pre-college, Continuing Education and Workforce Development continue to be strong and offerings have increased in the areas of remedial programs, vocational, avocational, and recreational programs. The department re-launched the Tax Practitioner’s Institute and started a Hemodialysis Technician program. Most importantly, however, the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant and the Liberty Partnership Project Prize grants enable remedial programs serving both high school and middle school students. Vocational programs with Martin Van Buren High School Perkins NYSED and with the NYC Small Business Services in allied healthcare were added. 26 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 Kurt R. This service was initiated in October 2006. The drop in the patron count during 2007-08 is attributed to increased availability of library resources online and loss of library space, especially the temporary loss of a silent study area. In 2014 the circulation statistics reporting changed. Previously, all items loaned from the reserve desk were books. Starting in 2014, the reserve desk loans books and devices. Devices include calculators, cordless chargers, headphones, DVDs, the scanner key and the key to the group study room. Source: Kurt R. Tuition Based Enrollment While the community service and remedial program enrollment remained approximately the same, the vocational and avocational program enrollment increased. The department re-launched the Tax Practitioner’s Institute and started a Hemodialysis Technician program. The avocational, recreational and social program enrollment increased due to an increase in swimming and pool rental programs. Grant Based Enrollment The 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, the department's largest, changed its focus. Along with the Liberty Partnership Project Prize grants, it is now categorized as a remedial program, serving both high school and middle school students. Vocational programs were added with Martin Van Buren High School Perkins NYSED and with the NYC Small Business Services in allied healthcare. The CUNYCareerPath program wound down by the fall of 2014, completing its third year cycle, and was working on job readiness skills with its final cohort of students. 28 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 E. Grades, Academic Standing, Retention and Graduation The college-wide grade distribution is very stable at Queensborough. In the past five years, semester grades showed the following pattern: about 30 percent of students received As, roughly 40 percent received grades between B+ and C, and 27 to 30 percent received grades below a C. Students do better in freshmen composition courses than in gateway mathematics courses. This might be a reflection of incoming students' stronger remedial needs in mathematics. First-time full-time freshmen who entered QCC in fall 2013 earned on average 17 non-equated credits in their first year at Queensborough. Twenty-three percent took one or more courses in the summer after entry. Twenty-nine percent of transfer students who entered QCC in fall 2013 took one or more summer courses after entry. In general, transfer students are more likely to take summer courses than freshmen. The one-year retention rate of the fall 2013 first-time full-time freshman cohort was 69 percent. An additional 1.8 percent transferred to another college within CUNY and 3.6 percent transferred to a college outside CUNY by fall 2014. The minority one year retention gap decreased further for the fall 2013 first-time full-time freshmen cohort. While the one-year retention rate of underrepresented students (black, Hispanic, Native American) was 7.4 percentage points lower for the fall 2011 cohort, the fall 2012 cohort showed a difference of 5.9 percentage points and the fall 2013 cohort showed a difference of only 4.3 percentage points between underrepresented and non-underrepresented student groups. The one-year retention rate of male students was 5.1 percentage points lower compared to the rate of the female students for the fall 2013 cohort. The three-year graduation rate at QCC has increased from 16.2 percent for the fall 2009 first-time full-time freshman cohort to 18.5 percent for the fall 2010 cohort and remained stable at 18.1 percent for the fall 2011 cohort. This is encouraging in part because the fall 2011 cohort was the first CUNYfirst fall cohort and had a lower one year retention rate than prior cohorts. The four-year graduation rate of the fall 2010 first-time full-time freshmen cohort was 26.2 percent, the highest four-year rate recorded. An additional 2.2 percent had graduated from another college before fall 2014 and 26.4 percent were still pursuing their degree by fall 2014 (either at QCC or another college within or outside CUNY). Source: Registrar Office 36 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 F. Degrees Awarded and Transfer-Out Queensborough Community College granted 1,949 Associate's degrees and 24 certificates in the academic year 2013-2014 (summer 2013, fall 2013, spring 2014 graduations combined). The programs with the largest numbers of graduates were the Liberal Arts & Sciences program (LA-AA), the Business Administration program (BT-AS), Criminal Justice program (CJ-AS), the Health Sciences program (HS-AS), the math and science focused Liberal Arts & Sciences program (LS-AS) and the Nursing Science program (NS-AAS and NH-AAS). These programs together granted a total of 1,455 Associate's degrees in the academic year 20113-2014. To date, Queensborough Community College has awarded 60,833 degrees and certificates. Eighty-five percent of the 2013-2014 dual/joint degree program graduates (246 graduates) transferred to a senior college (CUNY or outside CUNY) within one year. Close to three-quarters (73.7 percent) of graduates from other transfer degree programs transferred and 50.1 percent of graduates from career programs transferred to a senior or comprehensive college within one year after graduation. Transfer rates were calculated by counting a graduate transferred if he or she had registered in a senior or comprehensive college (CUNY or outside CUNY) in any or all semester(s) of the academic year following the graduation year (for the 2013-2014 graduates, the academic terms were summer 2014, fall 2014, and spring 2015 -- summer only registrations not counted). Thirty-seven percent of all 2013-14 graduates who transferred to a senior school went to Queens College, 13 percent went to a school outside CUNY, 12 percent went to Baruch College, and ten percent went to John Jay. A National Student Clearinghouse search revealed that QCC students also transfer to other schools before earning a degree. Not surprising, most students who transfer without a degree come from the largest programs such as the Liberal Arts and Sciences programs (LA-AA and LS-AS), the Business Administration program (BT-AS), the Health Sciences program (HS-AS), and the Criminal Justice program (CJ-AS). 37 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 Degrees Awarded by Program Graduation Years¹ 2007-2008 to 2013-2014 QCC Code Program Degree '07/'08 '08/'09 '09/'10 '10/'11 '11/'12 '12/'13 13/'14 A.S. Faculty & Personnel Queensborough Community College employed 391 full-time faculty members, 44 other full-time instructional staff members, and 183 full-time higher education officers (HEOs) in fall 2014. The number of full-time faculty has increased by 20 percent over the last five years, from 327 in fall 2009 to 391 in fall 2014. The number of higher education officers has increased substantially in the last five years from 122 in fall 2009 to 183 in fall 2014. The College added 30 more HEO positions in the last year. The majority of these new positions provide direct services to students, especially in academic advisement. Women and men are equally represented among full-time faculty. The full-time equivalent (FTE) students to one full-time faculty ratio of 29 : 1 in fall 2014 was the lowest since fall 2007. While the student enrollment increased substantially at Queensborough during this time period, the hiring of full-time faculty slightly outpaced the increase in student enrollment. The shifts in proportions among faculty ranks reflect the influx of new hires and the impact of recent retirement incentives. 48 Queensborough Community College, 2014-2015 Full-Time Faculty By Rank Fall Term Professor # % 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 74 76 77 76 77 66 67 65 67 26% 25% 25% 23% 22% 19% 17% 17% 17% Associate Professor # % 55 62 61 84 95 103 97 91 90 19% 21% 20% 26% 27% 30% 25% 24% 23% Assistant Professor # % 116 119 117 100 109 109 123 142 143 40% 40% 38% 31% 31% 32% 32% 37% 37% Instructor # % Lecturer # % 18 13 13 17 19 23 14 13 5 25 31 36 50 57 45 83 72 86 6% 4% 4% 5% 5% 7% 4% 3% 1% 9% 10% 12% 15% 16% 13% 22% 19% 22% Total # 288 301 304 327 357 346 384 383 391 By Gender Professor Associate Professor Assistant Professor Instructor Total Lecturer Fall Term Male Female Male Female Male Female Male Female Male 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 45 46 44 46 46 37 34 34 35 29 30 33 30 31 29 33 31 32 29 32 32 43 46 46 46 44 43 26 30 29 41 49 57 51 47 47 51 49 48 39 46 45 57 66 70 65 69 69 61 63 64 66 76 73 9 8 8 8 10 12 6 7 4 9 5 5 9 9 11 8 6 1 14 14 15 20 23 18 37 34 41 Female % Female 11 18 21 30 34 27 46 38 45 48.6% 50.5% 51.6% 52.3% 52.1% 54.3% 53.1% 51.7% 50.6% M/F 288 301 304 327 357 346 384 383 391 Includes: Leaves, Subs.
