The track itself is a Chevron 440 surface, possibly the most resilient surface ever produced. The entire layout of Wayne Valley Field is one of the nation's most imaginative and modern in terms of surface, spectator viewing and provision for electronic aids. The track was named in the memory of Wayne Valley, a former student-athlete who died in 1969. His father, Wayne Valley Sr., was also an Oregon State graduate who made numerous contributions to the OSU athletic program. Wayne Va'ley Sr., is a highly successful businessman in the San Francisco Bay Area, who at one time was a principal owner of the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League. Wayne Valley Jr. was a lineman on the OSU football team from 1964 to 1966. He played in the Rose Bowl in 1964 under coach Tommy Prothro. Valleydied in a drowning accident in 1969. 1983 The Coaching Staff CHUCK McNEIL Head Coach 2nd year at Oregon State (San Jose State, 1959) Now in his second year as Oregon State track and field coach Chuck McNeil is dedicated to building a strong overall program. Having been associated with OSU under coaches Sam Bell and Bernie Wagner for 12 years, he replaced Frank Morris, who left the Beaver camp for Arizona State. McNeil brings plenty of experience to his post having coached on all levels of competition. As an OSU assistant from 1964 to 1976, he helped develop nine individual NCAA champions while working in almost all areas of the sport. His main areas of concentration included sprints, hurdles and javelin, though he also handled jumpers and weightmen for the Beavers. A 1959 graduate of San Jose State University with a degree in physical education, he received his master's degree from Oregon State in counseling and Guidance in 1964. He is currently working on a second masters' degree. Originally from California, McNeil competed as a sprinter in high school and at San Jose State University. He also ran competitively for the Southern California Striders and the Santa Clara Valley Youth Village track clubs. His previous coaching experience includes stints on the high school and junior college levels. He has been a member of the Oregon State PE staff since 1965. McNeil also boasts international coaching experience having coached in six foreign countries. Among his positions was that of head coach for the Israeli National Team where he developed athletes for the Moscow Olympics of I 1980. McNeil has also coached in Ghana preparing athletes for the Munich Olympics and worked with track and field programs in Tanzania in 1970 as part of a Fulbright professorship. GARY SIEVERS MIKE CHRISS Assistant Coach 4th year at Oregon State (Cal State- Assistant Coach 3rd year at Oregon State (University of Long Beach, 1979)) Oregon, 1979) Mike Chriss, 28, joined the Oregon State staff in September of 1982 after serving as an assistant track and field coach at Tigard High School during the 1981-82 school year. He also coached at Sprague High School in Salem Gary Sievers came to Oregon State after running distance for the University of Oregon from 1974-77. Competing in the Pacific-8 Conference, S levers had best times of 3:59 in the mile and 1:48.0 in the 800 meters. He was the Oregon AAU champion in the mile in 1975 and won a bronze metal at the World Games in Helsinki, Finland in 1978. Sievers prepped at Twin Falls, Idaho, and helped his team from 1979-81. A former football and track star for Medford High School, Chriss picked up four letters in football as a defensive back and ran hurdles in track where he was an AAA state champion. He earned prep All-America honors in both sports. At the University of Oregon Chriss played football as well as participating in track. He graduated from Oregon in 1979 with a B.S. in health education. His duties at Oregon State to three consecutive state titles running the half-mile. He won the 800 twice and was all-state three years. The 30-yearold Sievers will coach the distance runners at OSU. He has coached the Oregon State cross country team the past two seasons and last fall led the Beaver women to a fourth place finish in the NorPac Conference. His men's team placed include working with men's and women's sprinters and sixth in the Pac-lO's with Gid Rysdam finishing 16th (among American runners) at Nationals, the top finish for a Beaver runner in 13 years. hurdlers. [1 OREGON STATE Men's Track Preview Improvement is the theme for this season's track team. After an encouraging preseason on the indoor circuit, Coach Chuck McNeil looks to take positive steps this year. The 1985 edition offers several events where Oregon State is strong. There is a major void in the area of depth, but the team will have many of its stars back in fold from last years Olympic trials. Chris Waitman and Gid Rysdam both redshirts last season hope to pick up where they left off in 1983. On a less upbeat note, Pete Warner, a fine distance runner may miss his senior year of eligiblity, because of a stress fracture in the lower leg. Coach McNeil is hoping to petition the NCAA for another year of eligibility because of the severity of his injury (he redshirted last year). He was one of the better runners in an already strong distance crew. Despite the loss of Warner, OSU will still be very strong in the longer distances. Paced by the brilliant running of sophomore Karl Van Calcar and the return of Rysdam, the Beavers will be tough to beat in the steeplechase and 3000 meters. Van Calcar exploded on the track scene last year, setting a school record in the steeplechase (8:39.81) and qualified for the Olympic trials. Rysdam, who was formerly one of the best steeplechasers in the Pac-10 will team with Van Calcar to make OSU very tough in this event. Rysdam also has the best time in the 5000m (14:5.0, 2 years ago). addition to the hammer and discus Chris also leads the OSU depth charts in the shot put. The jumping events will feature a prize recruit in Dave Turnbull, Oregon's first 7 foot high school high jumper. He and incubent Dan Franklin should improve a previously weak event. Coach McNeil feels Turnbull should be able to surpass 7 feet this season, and Franklin should be much improved. The triple jump will be strong with Kenny Taylor, one of the best on the coast. Pole vault should again be strong with sophomores Greg Likens and Nick Till both returning after strong frosh campaigns. Likens and Till should be able to improve on last years marks of 170 and 15'O respectively, making the pole vault one of the stronger events for the Beavers. Despite the improvement in many areas the 85 edi- ton of the Beaver track team is very thin. Coach McNeil feels this year left him a little on the short side of the depth ledger. Many great athletes in the football program didnt come out this year because of the coaching switch. Once they become more settled we should see a few more football players. Regardless of whether or not the OSU track team gets some football players, this years team should stUl yield some very exciting individual performances. Unfortunately, the sprinting events wifl not boast any top flight returners. Ex-footbafl players Kenny Taylor and Tony Green head what will be a young unit. Brad Coe, a Washington State champion at the high school level, heads the list of newcomers. The middle distances look to be solid, but this is one area where Coach McNeil is especially thin. Holdovers Kasey Griffin and Greg Ferguson should lay a solid foundation for newcomers Marc Stewart, Jeff Tressler, and Steve Hickey in the 400m. Tressler and Hickey looked very strong during the ndoor season, and McNeil was also impressed by Stewart. Marc may surprise a few people this season, said McNeil, I look for good things to come from him. Craig Nelson finds himself alone in this previously 0' strong 800m event for the Beavers. Nelson is not a hanger-on however, last year he ran a 1:49.44, good enough to place 5th at the Pac-lO meet. Hurdling will also yield a scarcity of the Orange and Black. These events only have two returnees, Steve Wright and decathiete Greg Ferguson. Wright has shown promise as a 400m hurdler placing 3rd in the Pac-lO last year. The llOm hurdles failed to have a Pac-lO championship qualifier last season, but coach McNeil feels Wright will do better this season. In the field events, the Beavers look very solid with the return of multi-talented Chris Waltman. Newcomer John Thomas should provide immediate help in the hammer and discus. "John has been throwing 30 feet long in his practice throws this year, so we're hoping for big things from John." Waitman should do well also with a year of work on his strength and technique. "Vicki is not outstanding in any single Johnson and Meredith Howell, will be redshirted this season. Johnson, after a fine season last year where she put a school record 500h/2, will be sorely missed. event, but she is very strong," said McNeil, "she shou'd do very well for us." Tracie Johnson has shown some potential in the lOOm and McNeil feels she will also contribute in Meredith Howell has been slowed by a leg injury this winter, and it has been decided that rather than risk fur- 200m. Kelly Kaser another freshman is also expected to ther injury she will also redshirt. Losing Johnson and Howell the Lady Beavers will be hard pressed to make up for them. The distance events will be strong this season with Kathy Knowlton and Karen Mathison returning to form a strong nucleus. Knowlton has especially impressed McNeil during the indoor season. "Kathy improved step into a leading role in 400m and possibly the 400m intermediate hurdles. Kelly was All-State in Oregon last year. Its obvious that McNeil's concern about numbers is verified. The women's team this year make up for the lack of numbers, however, with a strong unity. almost 11 seconds between the Vandel and Oregon In- door meets. Karen Mathison is the first ady of the 1500m, setting a school record in that event of 4:27.9. Mathison may also run the 800m, but the 1500m is her race. There might be a surprise in the high jump event this season with a newcomer from the volleyball program, Shari Jamison. Jamison has some rather large shoes to fill following Carina Westover's graduation, but once again McNeil is optimistic. The Lady Beavers wiil have a fine lineup of javelin throwers this spring with Connie Peterka and Monica Witt returning. There is also a strong contingent of newcomers hoping to impress the coach. Julie Waage, a Portland native, decided to leave Kansas State and come back to Oregon after placing 3rd in the Big Eight. Kathy Sanders is another candidate high on McNeil's list. "I think we have two potential 170-foot javelin throwers, and two others who can throw 160 (Witt and Sanders). The responsibility of the discus and shot put fall on the shoulders of freshman Kristi Wreath. Kristi has Karen Mathison 1 shown potential putting the shot 36-1 3/4 at the Oregon indoor meet. Another freshman, Karen Rogge will probably make an impression before the season is over. Sprinting and hurdling will be handled by incubent Kari Weston. Weston competed in the lOOm high hurdles, 400m intermediate hurdles, lOOm, 200m, and Kathy Knowlton Alta Bates. Offering excellence in a wide range of acute and non-acute hospitaL care.
