Welcome to Monash Sport
Participation in sport and recreation activities
is an important part of campus life and the
student experience at Monash University.
There is growing evidence indicating that
participation in the programs and activities
that we facilitate will positively benefit your
mental health & wellbeing, stress relief, your
sense of belonging on campus and ultimately
your academic performance. We passionately
believe that healthy bodies complement
healthy minds.
Monash Sport hosts over one million
participant visits to its services, programs
and facilities each year. The staff at Monash
Sport strive to ensure that you have access
to high quality health & fitness, social sport,
aquatic and indoor/outdoor sport participation
opportunities and we provide a diverse array
of services and programs to enrich your on
campus experience - we can help you learn
to swim, provide expert health and fitness
programs and advice, get you involved in a
team in our social sport competitions and help
you achieve your health and fitness goals in
our running groups, group fitness classes or
SwimFit programs.
In 2015 we introduced a free learn to swim
program for Monash University students
3
called Water Wise. The program has been
an enormous success and helped over 1,500
students develop water safety skills and
techniques and feel more confident in the
water, in its first year.
We also pride ourselves on ensuring you have
lots of fun whilst on campus and we run and
get involved in a number of annual events on
campus including:
• Play On!
• College Clash
• Friday Night Freeze
• Monash Games
• Footy Colours Day
• One World Festival
• Mega Swim
A number of these events raise siginificant
funds for worthy causes. Further information
about these events is included in this guide.
Monash Sport is home to over 50 University
sports clubs which train and compete in a
wide range of sports and activities and provide
tremendous peer support networks and
leadership opportunities for students. There
are clubs that offer participation opportunities
at varying levels of competition and social
activity. Alternately, you can form your own
team and join the 5,000 students that play in
our social sport competitions each year at the
Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses.
We also provide free-play opportunities during
the day at Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula
when you want to chill out or shoot a few
hoops with other students.
This guide features many options to assist you
to ‘get active’ on campus and enhance your
experience at Monash University. We regularly
evaluate and improve our services, programs
and facilities and welcome your feedback and
suggestions. Enjoy your time at Monash and I
hope to see you in action soon.
Keep well,
Brett Lavale
Director, Monash Sport.
The Monash Sport Fitness Centre received the Health Club of
the Year Award, at the 2015 Aquatics and Recreation Victoria

Walter Robles,

Water Wise participant
“I wanted to join the Water Wise
program because I thought it
was an excellent opportunity to
learn how to swim in Australia
and it was free!
I’m much more confident
going into the sea. Much more
confortable going into the
swimming pool, even if it’s
deeper than I am tall.”
