Purpose. To establish procedures for administration and governance of the Quantitative Eco~iomics(SQE) major, offered jointly by the Economics Department and the Mathematics Department. 2. Discussion: a. The goal of the SQE major is to produce graduates who are adept at using ma.thematics to understand and evaluate problems in economics. The major requires students to take approximately equal numbers of courses from the Economics and Mathematics Departments and a capstone research seminar course taught jointly by members of both departments. b. The SQE major is administered by a standing committee, the Quantitative Economics Committee, consisting of six faculty members - three from the Mathematics Department and .three from the Economics Department. The Chair is a faculty member from the Economics Department. The Senior Academic Advisor is a faculty member from the Mathematics Department. c. The SQE major is a Group II major. The Quantitative Economics Committee reports to the Academic Dean and Provost through the Division Director, Division of Mathematics and Science. d. Proposals for curl-icularchanges are submitted by the SQE Committee Chair via the Group II Curriculum Committee. e. The Chairs of Economics and Mathematics each nominate committee members from their departments for approval by the Academic Dean and Provost via their division directors. The Economics Department Chair nominates the SQE Committee Chair through the Division Directors of Humanities and Social Sciences and Mathematics and Science. The Senior Academic Advisor for SQE is chosen by members of the SQE Committee from among those members of the SQE Committee who are faculty members in the Mathematics Department. Reappointment beyond four years will be considered when such reappointment is deemed in the best interest of .the Naval Academy. SQE Committee members serve four year terms and may be reappointed to subsequent terms. 3. Action a. SQE Committee Chair (1) Will establish times and locations of committee meetings and determine the rules of procedures to be used during meetings. (2) Will inform the Chairs of Mathematics and Econo~iiicswhen vaca~icieson the committee occur and request replacements. (3) Will perform other such tasks as are necessary to assure the smooth functioning of the SQE program. b. SQE Senior Academic Advisor will assign academic advisors to SQE majors and will counsel students considering the major. c. Department Chairs of Mathematics and Economics (1) Will submit nominations for membership of the SQE Committee to the Acaderr~icDean and Provost via .their division directors. Nomination of the SQE Committee Chair will be submitted via both division directors. (2) Will offer courses necessary to meet the requirements of the major and assign appropriate teaching staff to those courses. (3) The Mathematics Department Chair will determine the meeting time and location of .the jointly taught capstone research seminar. Each department will assign a faculty nieniber to teach the course.
