Design Template for Professional Development Component: Introduction to the Mathematics Program Improvement Review Design Team Members: Shelia Pell, Joy Marino, Roger Bennett Length of Time: 90 Minutes Essential Questions: How can putting an emphasis on the Mathematics Program Improvement Review program affect state, county, and school instructional performance in the classroom? How does this process of review affect student achievement? What purpose does the Mathematics Program Improvement Review document serve? Participants will Know: The purpose The process Benefits Who reviews? Participants will Understand: the importance of the Mathematics Program Improvement Review document. the process of performing a Mathematics Program Improvement Review. the benefits of performing a Mathematics Program Improvement Review. the composition of the Mathematics Program Improvement Review team. Participants will be able to Do (Skills): prepare their school and school personnel for a Mathematics Program Improvement Review demonstrate an understanding of the importance and purpose of the Mathematics Program Improvement Review process Activating Prior Knowledge: 1. KWL – Participants will complete a “what do you know and what you want to know” parts of the KWL chart on the Mathematics Program Improvement Review. (Handout #1) The KWL’s will not be shared with the group but will be individually done. A review at the end will conclude with the completion of the “what did you learn” section. Specialized Vocabulary: MPIR Active Learning: Present the PowerPoint including notes with the following embedded activities: 1. Teacher Self-Perception Ranking: Participants will complete the Teacher Self-Perception Questionnaire individually. After completing the questionnaire they will meet in small groups and review the sheets for most valuable questions. Participants will then rank the most important and least important questions as far as improving the Mathematics Program of their prospective schools from the questionnaire. (Handout #2) A group list could be made and discussed. 2. Parent/Student/Teacher Role play of a Panel Discussion Roles are given to 4 participants. (Handout #3) Participants are to act out their answers to the questions from different questionnaires. 3. Classroom Observation Participants will be viewing a video of a classroom. (Attachment #1) During their observation the participants will complete an Classroom Observation form or script the lesson (Handouts #4 and #5). After completing the video and forms the participants will share their results and compare information. Reflection The participants will complete the “L” section of the KWL chart.
