The Conference theme this year was Reading with the Arts: Off the Charts. How awesome to see the entire Integrated Arts Team from Spencer Elementary at the conference and learning how the arts are used to collaboratively support literacy. Great to see you there! TIME SENSITIVE INFORMATION Charleston Ballet presents the Nutcracker Delight in this family holiday classic presented by the Charleston Ballet and the WV Symphony Orchestra. There is a cast of 75 dancers and guest artists, live music, and lavish costumes and sets. Performances are December 12th at 7:30 and December 13th at 2:00 and 7:30 at the Clay Center. Kennedy Center Very Special Arts team has issued a call for conference proposals for their 2015 VSA Conference. The 2015 VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference will take place August 3-4, 2015, in Arlington, VA. Intersections provides professionals in the intersecting fields of arts education and special education the opportunity to share current information in research, practice, programs, and policy, and serve as a leading catalyst for change. Proposals are now being accepted for conference sessions and workshops that explore an array of topics and emerging issues at the intersection of the arts and education for students with disabilities from kindergarten to 12th grade. Intersections participants seek: Practical information to apply in their classrooms and infuse into their practice. Meaningful opportunities to contribute to changes that improve the future of arts education for students with disabilities. Discussion, collaboration, and more with active colleagues in the field. This week the university announced a casting call for West Virginia high school students and college students to submit a film or video project for the 3rd Annual Tower Awards for Student Film and Media Arts. All submissions must be received by December 12, 2014 with the appropriate entry form, a $5 entry fee and a digital file. Art submissions must be received between January 2, 2015 and January 30, 2015. The awards reception and a free workshop will be held at the Culture Center March 3, 2014. The winner from each congressional district will have their artwork displayed at the United States Capitol for one year, as well as, receive a $100.00 Dick Blick Art Supplies gift card. There will be five second place winners who will receive a $50.00 Dick Blick Art Supplies gift card. These reports can be localized to any state, county, congressional or legislative district in the country. The living inductees are: R&B songwriter and performer John Ellison, steel guitarist Russ Hicks, and jazz pianist Bob Thompson. The deceased inductees are: fiddler Ed Haley, country music pioneer Buddy Starcher, and piano legend Harry Van Walls. The induction ceremony will take place October 24, 2015 at the Culture Center Theater and will be broadcast live on WV PBS. The event will be part of FestivALL Fall. The sixth induction ceremony coincides with The WV Music Hall of Fame’s 10th anniversary. The program is standards based. The program is based on an original children’s book written, illustrated, and composed by Sam Yurick on ipad. Drawing and music are explored on ipad. Creative movement and dance classes weave dance into the story. Students are lead through a presentation of the story for the school and guests. Presenters Barbara Yurick and Sam Yurick are available to provide Teacher Training to lead students through the program, or to provide sessions for students. Flexible programming is available for one day workshops or several day intensives. It is designed for 2nd or 3rd grades. Other arts integration programs are available.
