Board members and Mr. Lannon expressed appreciation to Cody for his inspiration and outstanding contribution to the school system. Cody also recognized and thanked Ms. Barbara Casteen, Director of Student Services, for her help throughout the year. 5. Florida History Fair Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award Winner - Valerie Arendas (Revised) Minutes: The Florida History Fair awarded Port St. Lucie High School history fair school coordinator and 10th-grade world history teacher Valerie Arendas with the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award, Senior Division, for her many years of dedication to National History Day activities at her school. The Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award recognizes outstanding National History Day educators. Each state selects a junior and senior-division recipient, who receive a $500 cash prize. The names of these individuals are advanced for competition at the national level. Junior- and seniordivision winners of the national Behring Award each receive $10,000. The Board congratulated Ms. Arendas on her excellent work and dedication. 6. Employee Wellness Program Logo Design Contest Winners - Treasure Coast High Graphic Arts Students (Revised) Minutes: Wellness Manager Carlye Fabrikant revealed the St. Lucie County Public Schools Employee Wellness Program logo that was created by Treasure Coast High School Graphic Arts students, Kiersten Pauline and Victoria Willis, and presented the students with an award for their very appropriate and beautiful Page 2 of 18 design. 7. Teacher of Excellence Utilizing Technology Grant Awards Minutes: Mr. Glenn Rustay, Chairman of the St. Lucie County Education Foundation's Teachers of Excellence Utilizing Technology (TEUT) Committee, introduced and presented three educators with Dell computers for their outstanding grant applications as follows: Pamela Garrity from Bayshore Elementary, Diane Buchholz from Port St. Lucie High School, and Sally VanDereedt from Lincoln Park Academy. JoAnne Trubisky, the District's Teacher of the Year, also received a Dell computer. 8. Mr. Tim Bargeron, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services/CFO, provided budget details on per student funding, critical operating millage, non-recurring revenue sources, deferred capital funds, operating revenues and expenditures. 33. Stories From Our Schools Minutes: Mr. Lannon shared letters from Dan McCarty 3-8 School celebrating a 22% gain in writing scores and Mariposa Elementary related to PTO officer elections and their commitment to students. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS' REPORTS 34. Comments/Reports Minutes: Comments from board members centered around Lincoln Park Academy school ranking, FCAT testing v. standardized testing, Roundtable subcommittee beginning discussion on generational poverty, and tribute to teachers for what they do every day. UNSCHEDULED SPEAKERS 35. Speaker(s) Page 17 of 18 Minutes: Mr. Dario Lizarazu, math teacher at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, talked about working to the contract, low teacher morale, financial difficulty on a teacher's salary, and lower evaluations that 70% of teachers received this year. Mr. Lizarazu asked that the Board not put teachers on the back burner--consider the teacher's point of view when looking at the evaluation system overall. ADJOURNMENT 36.
