Education Foundation of SLC – Foundation Focus Foundation Focus is a television program conducted by the St Lucie Education Foundation. It is hosted by the Executive Director of the Foundation. The purpose of the program is to raise the awareness of the purpose and activities of the Foundation and to discuss relevant issues that meet our primary mission to promote, encourage and recognize excellence in public education. We do this by providing grants and awarding scholarships to students. We are a direct support organization of the St Lucie Public School District and all of our activities support public K-12 education in St Lucie County. Recruitment & retention segment. School Report St. Lucie Public Schools - An innovative partnership that has been in development for several months, literally took off at Adams Arena in Fort Pierce as middle school students compete for top honors by navigating drones through a maze. In a joint venture with the Treasure Coast Research Park, AT&T, and St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS), 18 drones were donated to support inquiry programs at Dan McCarty Middle School, Samuel S. Gaines K – 8 Academy, and West Gate K – 8 School. Speakers Bureau - Dan McCarty Middle School The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speakers at Dan McCarty Middle School this month were Representative Larry Lee, Mr. Jerome Ryant, Reverend Kenny Mills and Mr. Lafayette Ashley. Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grade students had the opportunity to hear the authentic testimonials of their guest speakers. Three separate sessions were held to accommodate each grade group and each session began with a musical presentation from Dr. Rolanda Jones and her Students playing their African Drums. Speakers Bureau - Ft. Pierce Westwood High School The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speakers at Ft. Pierce Westwood High School this month were Mr. Randy Roundtree, Mr. Darcy McFolley, Mr. Thernell Mills, and Mrs. Shaniek Maynard. All the speakers expressed to the students the importance of making the right choices as they journey through life. The central theme that was expressed by all the speakers was, “It’s okay to be different and not follow the crowd.” Speakers Bureau – Samuel S. Gaines Academy K-8 The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speakers at Samuel S. Gaines Academy K-8 this month were Mr. E. Wayne Gent, Superintendent of St. Lucie Public Schools, and Mr. Lafayette Ashley, Graduating Senior of Ft. Pierce Central High School Class of 2016. Mr. Gent captured the attention of the students as he told them how he chose to never give up on his dream of becoming a superintendent of schools. Mr. Ashley inspired the students by sharing some of his personal challenges and expressed to them that if you want something bad enough, you will work hard to get it. Mr. Ashley will be attending Warner University in the fall on a full ride scholarship. Hibiscus Children’s Center The Hibiscus Children’s Center program focuses on April - National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Paul Sexton, Hibiscus Children’s Center CEO, hosts the show and his guests are Chloe Henry and Art Ciasca. Chloe is a former Hibiscus resident who years ago, was moved around from foster home to foster home, then placed at Hibiscus Children’s Center. She is sharing her story to help bring awareness about child abuse and growing up in the child welfare system. During a very difficult and scary time in her young life, she found safety, guidance and love at the Hibiscus Shelter. Paul will discuss with Art Ciasca, CEO of Suncoast Mental Health, the critical mental health services that both Suncoast and Hibiscus provide to the community and the importance of recognizing mental health issues and how they are addressed in our community. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so this program brings together two very important months that shed awareness on critical subjects our children and families are facing. ¿Qué Pasa St. Lucie?
