Introduction

PERIscope is Bord Bia‟s comprehensive review of food attitudes, shopping and cooking trends amongst a
nationally representative sample of adults.

In previous waves of the research, biennial studies were produced for ROI/NI/GB and for other European
countries (including France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand and the US).
In 2015, the countries were amended and research was conducted in ROI, GB, France, Germany, Spain,
Netherlands and the US. In addition, China was a new market added this year.

In 2013, Bord Bia took the decision to combine both studies in order to obtain a more detailed perspective
on how consumers view food related issues and report their behaviours across 10 countries. PERIscope
2015 therefore, as in 2013, provides research findings for the ROI/GB and Continental study in one year.

Over the various studies we have held many questions constant to allow tracking over time; we also
include topical issues as they arise.

This deck is designed to provide a thorough flavour of the PERIscope 2015 results for Spain. The
charts included represent the study results. More detailed information is available in the tabular
reports.

Research Method

Online survey conducted by Ipsos MRBI on behalf of Bord Bia.

The research was conducted among a representative sample of adults aged 18+ in Spain.

Quotas were set on sex, age, region and social class to ensure a representative sample.

Sample size 1,000.

Fieldwork was conducted between June and July 2015.

Please note, there may be discrepancies in relation to some of the „total‟ figures within this report. This
is due to rounding (e.g. “slightly agree” at 45, “strongly agree” at 30, “agree” at 76).

Where new statements have been added or in instances where question wording and/or format may
have changed, missing data is represented by „n/a‟.

Attitudes Towards Food
Attitudes Towards Food: Summary
12

More than 90% of Spanish adults claim to have a diet that consists of a lot of protein, fruit and vegetables,
while almost 9 in 10 claim to eat high fibre foods and 86% avoid sugary foods / sweets.

Similar to 2013, a significant proportion of Spanish adults admit to rarely having time to eat a proper
breakfast (59%). In line with previous years, almost 7 in 10 admit to often eating ready prepared food.

In terms of utility ownership, 1 in 5 Spanish adults claim to own a Nutri-Bullet, while there appears to be a
further decrease in ownership of smoothie makers. In addition, there seems to be a continuing positive
environmental trend as more households appear to be switching to electric ovens over gas equivalents.

Since 2010, a growing proportion on Spanish adults believe that chilled food is better than frozen food.
However, the majority still consider frozen and chilled to be the same.

Attitudes Towards
Cooking
Attitudes Towards Cooking: Summary

The level of Spanish culinary expertise appears to be in continuing decline since 2006. In comparison to
2013 there has been a slight increase among those who can cook a simple dinner, while a further decline
has been recorded among more skilled cooks. Females and those aged 45+ tend to be more competent
cooks overall.

In addition, there appears to be a further increase in the regular use of ready prepared ingredients on a
weekly basis.

However, over 4 in 10 Spanish adults now acknowledge that cooking is important because eating well is
important and there has been a decline in the proportion of people who feel cooking is a chore.

Overall, the Spanish attitude towards convenience meals continues to be positive, with almost 7 in 10
believing that convenience meals are filling. While almost 6 in 10 claim that they are a good substitute for
home cooking when time is limited.

Quality and healthiness record an increase in importance for Spanish adults when preparing / eating a
meal at home. However, value for money and price appear to have become less significant, with a return
to rankings recorded in 2008.

Food Behaviours
At Lunch Time
Food Behaviours At Lunch Time: Summary

Just over 3 in 10 Spanish adults now claim to eat their lunch at work, which represents a growing trend
since 2010 whereby less of the Spanish population are eating lunch at home.

In addition, there has been a downward trend in those bringing their lunch to work and a corresponding
increase in the proportion of those going out to eat lunch.

Sandwiches and fruit are the items most commonly found in the lunchboxes of Spanish children. Juice
and water are the most popular drinks, while water is found in less than half of lunchboxes, followed by
smoothies in just over a third.

Similarly to 2013, cereal bars and cheese snacks are less popular, while crisps and popcorn are only
present in very few lunchboxes.

Eating in Home
Eating In Home: Summary
47

Similar to all previous years, approximately 4 in 10 claim to have responsibility for always preparing their
own meals, while a further 3 in 10 claim to take responsibility for meal preparation some of the time.

Since 2010, Spanish families appear more likely to sit down together for breakfast, with just over a quarter
claiming to eat together every morning. The majority still tend to do this most frequently at the weekend.

In 2015, there has been an increase in the types of entertaining done at home. Similar to 2010, Spanish
adults are more likely to have friends over and have a romantic meal at home instead of going out.

Interestingly, family celebrations at home appear to have become increasingly popular over the past five
years.

Eating Out of Home
Eating Out Of Home: Summary
54

Similar to 2013, the incidence of eating out in the last 7 days has increased across the board for meals or
snacks eaten in a pub/restaurant/café, takeaway meals and meals or snacks delivered in home.

The proportion of people who claim to have eaten a meal or snack in a pub/restaurant/café has increased
to 78%, and reflects a return to levels recorded pre-recession.

The most frequent type of meal prepared out of home is a takeaway meal. Among those who ordered a
takeaway meal delivered to their home in the past 7 days, an average of 4.3 times a week was recorded.

The proportion of people claiming to have eaten a takeaway in the past week has been creeping steadily
upwards since 2008, while the proportion getting deliveries of snacks or meals to the home is the highest
reported figure since research began.

Health & Wellbeing
Health & Wellbeing: Summary
57

Just over 8 in 10 Spanish adults believe their diet to be healthy, with only 3% claiming their diet as fairly
unhealthy.

Attitudes towards diet, nutrition and wellbeing among the Spanish population are overwhelmingly positive
and remain broadly static since 2013.

There is almost universal positive understanding that in order to be healthy it is really important to eat
properly, while almost 8 in 10 consider what they eat to be really important for wellbeing.

84% agreed that they find it difficult to understand nutritional claims on packaging, an increase of 1
percentage point since 2013. When compared to 2013, an identical proportion find it difficult to understand
labelling on food, indicating that despite claims of understanding what it means to be healthy, there is a
gap in the Spanish‟ ability to interpret the healthiness of certain food products.

Almost half of the adult Spanish population with dependent children state that they find it difficult to get
their children to eat vegetables with their dinner. 9 in 10 always try to ensure that their children have a
balanced diet, and 84% are conscious of their children‟s sugar intake, thus reinforcing the importance
placed on eating healthy among Spaniards.

Environmental Issues
Environmental Issues: Summary
71

Only just over 1 in 10 Spanish adults claim to have never heard of the term „Sustainably Produced‟. This
reflects levels of awareness recorded in 2010. However, just over half the population claim to buy food
with low sustainably produced features, an increase of 13 percentage points since 2013.

Similar to 2013, awareness of „Carbon Footprint‟ is relatively low. Just over half of Spanish adults claim
never to have heard of the term. Awareness and purchase of foods with a low carbon footprint have both
decreased since 2008.

Awareness of „Food Miles‟ has fallen since 2013, with just over 8 in 10 claiming to be unaware of the term.

Approximately 1 in 5 Spanish adults claim to be unaware of the terms „Food Waste‟, „Animal Welfare‟ and
„Conserving Resources‟ in the context of food production. However, a further half state that they
sometimes / actively / always try to buy food which considers these issues.

More than 6 in 10 Spanish adults claim to be “more conscious of environmental issues in their choice of
products nowadays” and to “prefer to buy from companies that are aware of the impact of environmental
issues.”

Grocery Shopping
Grocery Shopping: Summary

Spanish grocery shoppers continue to rank quality considerations among the most important when
shopping for grocery items. This year sees less of an emphasis being placed on price, with only 1 in 10
stating that price is the first thing they look for. In fact, while 4 in 10 Spanish adults still claim to shop
around, spreading their shopping across a number of shops to get the best value, the number of those
claiming to do so more often records a decline of 13 percentage points since 2013.

A new question in 2015, „low/reduced sugar‟ and „low/reduced fat‟ have emerged as the most important
statements on food labels, with almost 4 in 10 considering these to be very important.

Similar to recent waves, awareness of & likelihood to purchase functional foods continues to decline.
Awareness of Fair Trade and Ethical products and G.I. records levels of increased awareness in 2015.

In Spain, the majority of grocery shoppers claim to check for quality symbols and country of origin.
However, while the proportion claiming to always check for quality symbols has been declining, those
checking country of origin information records a marginal increase in 2015.

37% of Spanish adults claim to have ordered grocery shopping online. While just under three quarters
have ever downloaded a recipe. Among those who have downloaded apps, recipes, vouchers etc. the
frequency of doing so appears to be declining.

Buying Local
Buying Local: Summary
108

The importance of buying local produce when shopping for food has shown further improvements in 2015.
Almost 7 in 10 Spanish adults now consider local food to be very/fairly important.

In addition, the frequency of purchase also records an increase with a greater proportion of the adult
Spanish population buying local produce at least once a week.

Similar to 2013, almost half of Spanish adults believe „local food‟ to refer to food that is made within a
close proximity to where they live. Other definitions of local produce, including food that is available in
farmers‟ markets, and within a 20 mile radius to where they live both record increases in 2015.
