OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED ON OR BEFORE November 1, 2007 MAIL ALL ENTRIES TO: Project on Racism Essay Contest YWCA of Wheeling 1100 Chapline Street Wheeling, WV 26003 We join with the King Center and the WV State MLK Celebration Commission’s Celebration 2006 by examining Dr. King’s teachings. It is the hope of the King Center and the YWCA’s “Project on Racism Contest” to further the teaching and lessons of Dr. King by providing a venue for West Virginia students to share their vision of Dr. King’s legacy. In his Nobel Peace Prize lecture *Dr. King said “we have inherited a large house, a great ‘world house’ in which we have to live together - black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Moslem and Hindu-a family unduly separated in ideas, culture and interest, who because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace.” The theme for this years essay is: Inheriting a world house: learning to live together peacefully, describe how Dr. King’s dream for equality around the world can become a reality. Any student in grades 1 through twelve (1-12) attending public, private or home schools in the state of WV may enter. All essays must be handwritten, typed, or computer generated in black ink on white paper, double-spaced, one-side only. Maximum length: 500 words. Do NOT include photographs, images, illustrations, etc. Do NOT send binders, portfolios, or report covers. An official entry form must be attached to each original, unpublished essay. Winners will be selected according to the following criteria: originality- 20%; grammar – 20%, relevancy to theme – 30%; effective expression – 30%. First, Second and Third Place winners will be chosen in four categories: grades 1 through 2, 3 through 5, 6 through 8, and 9 through twelve. Winners will receive savings bonds awards and first place winners will be given the opportunity to read their essay at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Luncheon in January 2008. All winning students and submitting teachers will receive recognition certificates. No responsibility can be assumed for lost or late mail. Entries will not be acknowledged or returned.
