2. Admission Requirements

Applicants must be non-Japanese nationals and must correspond to one of the requirements below, provided that the resident status in Japan is ‘student’ ( shugaku or ryugaku ).

1) Applicants who have a bachelor’s degree or will obtain it by March 2010.

2) Applicants who have completed 16 years of education or equivalent at overseas institutions or will complete it by March 2010.

3) Applicants who are acknowledged by our committee to have academic ability equal to or surpassing that expected of holders of a bachelor’s degree.

[Notes]

- Holders of dual nationality come under the term of ‘non-Japanese.’

- Applicants who have completed an undergraduate/a master’s program in Japan as foreign students come under 1 or 2.

- Applicants who received high school education in Japan do not fall under 1 or 2.

Two Letters of Recommendation (Form D-6)

・ One from an advisor, the head, or Dean of the last school attended (except Japanese language school).

・ The other one can be written by anyone but the guarantor.

Statement of Financial Eligibility (Form D-7)

The document should demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition, fees, and living expenses while at the Graduate School.

Please attach a certifying document to prove one’s financial resources (eg. bank account balance certificate).

Acceptance Notice (Form G)

If you wish to receive the admission result by mail, please write the guarantor's name 1 and address.

*Note:

Applicants who have graduated from a university/graduate school in China or Taiwan must submit the ORIGINAL copy of academic transcript/diploma with Japanese or English translation. If you wish to have the original documents returned, please attach a self-addressed envelope with return postage for registered mail. The documents will be returned to you after confirmation.

Please note the following:

1) We may ask applicants to submit the original copy of some documents other than indicated above. (If the applicant wishes to have the original copy returned, please attach a self-addressed envelope.)

2) If documents are not in Japanese or English, a translation must be attached.

3) Once the documents are submitted, statements cannot be changed.

4) Applicants may apply for one graduate program only.

5) If the applicant is a foreign resident, completed application documents must be sent by the guarantor in Japan. In case the applicant resides in Japan, he/she may send the documents by him/herself. However, please note that all information from the university will be sent to the gurantor.

6) Once the documents are submitted and payments are complete, they will not be returned.

7) If there is any false statement in the documents, admission will be canceled.

8) All documents should be posted only by express or registered mail.

9) In case any document is missing or incomplete, or fails to reach us by the designated date, the application will not be accepted.

10) Applicants may not change the program or major after the primary screening.

Financial Eligibility

The Statement of Financial Eligibility (Form D-7) should be filled in by the applicant’s financial supporter. Please attach the following documents to prove one’s financial resources:

1) Personal Funding:

・ Bank account balance certificate of the applicant’s own account (the amount should be enough

to cover all expenses needed in Japan:- ¥1,500,000 or more)

3) Scholarship:

・ Certificate of scholarship (the amount should be enough to cover all expenses needed in Japan:-

¥1,500,000 or more)

4) Funding by a sponsor residing in Japan:

・ Copy of tax certificate, income tax certificate, or tax deduction certificate

・ Employment certificate

・ Certificate of residence (or alien registration certificate)

・ Proof of the sponsor’s relationship to the applicant (eg. a photo with the applicant)

Guarantor

Guarantor is responsible for the applicant’s application and admission procedures who will act as contact person during the applicant’s stay in Japan. The university will not introduce or act as guarantor.

A guarantor must meet all of the following requirements:

・ A self-supporting adult residing in Tokyo or in a neighboring prefecture.

・ A relative or friend of the applicant.

If the guarantor is a foreign national, he/she should be a permanent resident in Japan or should be able to stay in Japan during the applicant’s stay as a permanent or long term resident, or be a spouse of a Japanese national.

Guarantor's responsibility:

・ Application and admission procedures.

・ The applicant’s personal affairs/problems such as finance, studies, and life in Japan.

To make sure that the applicant does not get involved in any activities other than that are permitted by the Immigration Bureau.

4. Screening Procedure

1) Primary Screening (based on the evaluation of submitted documents)

The result of the primary screening will be announced by early December. Successful applicants will receive an admission card, a payment slip, and an application form for the secondary screening.

For overseas applicants, please obtain a visa at the Japanese embassy for entry into Japan for the purpose of taking the secondary screening test. Please contact the Faculty of Engineering upon your arrival to Japan.

Successful applicants who are selected in the primary screening must pay the application fee of

¥33,000 through a bank in Japan between the dates below:

December 7 – 17, 2009 (before 14:00)

Please note the following:

・ Payment should be made through a bank in Japan using the payment slip sent from the university.

・ The receipt slip should be stamped by the bank and returned to the university together with the completed application form.

・ Application fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

2) Secondary Screening (written test and interview)

A written test of English and an interview will be held to evaluate the knowledge in the research field, and academic ability on January 10, 2010

5. Anouncement of Successful Applicants

Successful applicants will be announced on the Faculty of Engineering bulletin board on:

January 20, 2010 at 13:00.

Please note the following:

1) Successful applicants should come to the Faculty of Engineering Administration Office before

January 30, 2010 (10:00-17:00) to receive the Letter of Admission and other forms necessary for enrollment. If you fail to visit the office before this date, your admission offer will be cancelled.

2) If you wish to receive the result by postal mail, please fill out and submit the Acceptance Notice

(Form G) and the Address Label (Form E-2).

6. Enrollment Procedure

Initial Enrollment: February 1 – February 8, 2010

Final Enrollment: February 15 –February 26, 2010

Please note the following:

1) If you fail to enroll during the designated period, your admission will be revoked.

2) You must pay the registration fee, tuition, and other expenses within the enrollment period. You may choose to pay the tuition for one semester or one academic year.

3) In the event of admission withdrawal, tuition and other expenses (except registration fee) will be refunded. However, you must inform the university up to one day before the entrance ceremony.

Certificate of Eligibility and Visa Application

Successful applicants of foreign nationality must obtain the Certificate of Eligibility ( zairyu shikaku ) for visa application.

1. Overseas applicants

1) If the applicant’s family member or financial sponsor (including the scholarship agency) resides in Japan, the Certificate of Eligibility should be applied by the family member or financial sponsor.

2) In case the applicant has no family member or financial sponsor in Japan, Soka University will act as proxy upon request to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility. Please fill out the designated form and submit it together with other required documents for enrollment.

Please note the following:

・ The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice. Soka University does not, therefore, guarantee issuance of the Certificate of Eligibility.

・ When the Certificate of Eligibility is issued, it will be mailed to the guarantor. The applicant must submit the certificate to the Japanese embassy or consulate in his/her country for visa application.

・ The Ministry of Justice may request additional documents.

2. Applicants who reside in Japan

If the applicant already holds a visa, it should be extended or changed to a student visa at the

Immigration Bureau.

・ Permanent residents do not need to change visa status, however, please note that you may become ineligible for scholarships provided to foreign students.

・ For other visa holders, please directly contact the Immigration Bureau.

3. Application by gurantor

Guarantor may apply for the Certificate of Eligibility directly at the Immigration Bureau.

Other Remarks

If you fail to arrive in Japan before the entrance ceremony or if there is any falsification in any of the documents presented for application or enrollment, the admission will be revoked.
