Administrative History
The Housing Futures Institute (HFI) was located within the Department of Architecture in the College
of Architecture and Planning. The institute was founded in 1991 to provide a platform for research and
development in innovations in housing structures and settings. The institute received funding from private
and public sectors in Indiana and adjacent states for projects designed to advance the technology of
new housing and also to provide opportunities for market stimulation for various aspects of the housing
industry.
The institutes main focus was to anticipate and address the housing requisites of home dwellers of various
age and income brackets. By designing spaces to fulfill perceived human needs and by incorporating
innovative, cost effective, and environmentally sound building technologies, the HFI sought to advance
the condition of the built environment and make homeownership a desirable and attainable reality for all.
The institute's focus eventually went beyond the home and encompassed the surrounding communities
and environments and their complex relationships. In 1999 the institute's name was changed to the
Building Futures Institute exploring architectural/community relationships through many types of
architecture.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes promotional materials, architectural drawings, project plans, correspondence and
administrative records from the College of Architecture and Planning's Housing Futures Institute ranging
from 1987-1998.
