Dear Parent, Your child has reached an important milestone and will soon be completing a preliminary plan for high school courses. It is important for you to be involved in the process in order that you understand West Virginia’s graduation requirements which include your child selecting a career cluster. In order to prepare our students for the rigor of college and technical education and the Global 21st Century Workforce, West Virginia has increased graduation requirements. Students graduating from ___________ High School must earn ____ credits. Student must begin deciding on a career focus and whether they will enter a skilled or profession pathway. We would like to invite you to meet with your student and the school counselor/advisor to participate in this important academic planning meeting. To be prepared for the meeting you should be aware of the following: we will discuss career concentrations, course available at the high school and requirements for admission to West Virginia Colleges and Universities as set forth by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Council (the governing body for colleges and universities in West Virginia). Generally speaking, students must complete four credits in English, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. Two of the four mathematics courses must be above Algebra I and Geometry. Students must also have one credit of fine arts, physical education and health. Four year college bound students must also have two credits in the same foreign language. They also must participate in some form of work based experience prior to graduation. Students who plan to participate in career and technical programs at the high school level must meet the following requirements for graduation: four credits in English, Social Studies, and Mathematics as well as three credits in science.
