I Can Do That! GRADE 3 LESSON 3 Time Required: 30 Minutes Content Standards: (7.2.1. Standard 4): Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. Indicators: a. Students will develop skills to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information. b. Students will learn about the variety of traditional and nontraditional occupations. GOAL: Students will explore careers of interest and evaluate the earning potential. Activity Statements: Students will learn about various career requirements, training/education, potential earnings, and projected job growth by accessing a website and exploring areas of academic interests and career possilities. Materials: 1. LCD Projector or Interactive whiteboard 2. Computer (with internet access)for each student (This is a lesson meant to be done in the computer lab) 3. Handout #1 Procedures: SAY: Today we are going to a government web site that will show you about different jobs, or careers. This website will give you an opportunity to select subjects that you are interested in, about the job, how to get ready for the job, how much it pays (averages), future growth of job, I Can Do That! GRADE 3 LESSON 3 related jobs and where to find more information about a job. (This lesson is meant for fourth and fifth graders, but it is an appropriate site for this age) 1. Instructor will go to http://kids.gov/educators/ed_careers.shtml (from main site click on educators, the 12 interests are listed on the left)). Display the so the class can see where to go and as a group, select several jobs so they can see how to select subject areas and jobs/careers that may interest them. (Please review the site prior to going over as a class.) 2. During the lesson, give the handout and ask the students to circle interests (subjects and jobs/careers), record how much money, and education/training is needed in the areas of interest. Discussion: 1. As a class, click on a job, for example careers involving and fixing things, then select a job and read/review with class the information found on that job. 2. Tell the children to then look around the site on their own, selecting subject areas, then jobs/careers of interest to them (Try to go to each child to help them, as well as ask questions about what they like, what jobs/careers interest them and why, etc.) 3. Approximately 5 minutes before class is over, ask the students, as a group, what they learned about the different jobs.
