Post-Secondary Options Pt. 2
GRADE 8 LESSON 13
Time Required: 30-45 minutes
Content Standards:
AA.S.2 Students will complete school with the academic rigor and
preparation essential to choose from a wide range of
substantial postsecondary options, including college.
AA.S.5 Students will employ strategies to achieve future career
goals and know where and how to obtain information
about the world of work and postsecondary
training/education.
Indicators:
AA.A.8.2.15
AA.C.8.5.07
Explore the costs associated with postsecondary options.
Explore postsecondary educational options.
GOAL: Students will review and expand their knowledge of postsecondary options.
Activity Statements:
Students will work in small groups to share information given to them about postsecondary
options. Then they will help each other answer questions associated with what they are
learning today about postsecondary options.
Materials:
Handout #1 2 & 4 Year College
Handout #2 Vocational and Technical Schools
Handout #3 Apprentice
Handout #4 Join the Military
Handout #5 Employment AfterHigh School
Procedures:
1. Divide students into groups with 5 in each group. Each member of the group will have a
different handout (total of 5 different handouts).
2. Instruct the student’s in their group, they will take turns sharing with their group
members the content of their handout. Essentially, they will be teaching the others the

content of their handout. They are each responsible for answering the questions at the
bottom of their handout with help from their group members.
3. Give students approximately 25 minutes to work in their groups.
4. Then go around randomly to each of the groups and select a student to report out to
the rest of the class the answers they wrote on their handout (with their groups help).
With each group that you select make sure to select a student with a different handout.
In other words, you will have all 5 handouts reported on but from different groups, not
all from the same group.
Discussion:
1. What did you learn new today about the benefits of different postsecondary options?
2. Did you learn something new today about one of the option? If so, what?
3. Did you learn any information today that might cause you to look differently at an
option now or to consider one you had not considered before?
4. What stood out to you the most today about all these different options?
