Post-Secondary Options Pt. 2 GRADE 8 LESSON 13 Time Required: 30-45 minutes Content Standards: AA.S.2 Students will complete school with the academic rigor and preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial postsecondary options, including college. AA.S.5 Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals and know where and how to obtain information about the world of work and postsecondary training/education. Indicators: AA.A.8.2.15 AA.C.8.5.07 Explore the costs associated with postsecondary options. Explore postsecondary educational options. GOAL: Students will review and expand their knowledge of postsecondary options. Activity Statements: Students will work in small groups to share information given to them about postsecondary options. Then they will help each other answer questions associated with what they are learning today about postsecondary options. Materials: Handout #1 2 & 4 Year College Handout #2 Vocational and Technical Schools Handout #3 Apprentice Handout #4 Join the Military Handout #5 Employment AfterHigh School Procedures: 1. Divide students into groups with 5 in each group. Each member of the group will have a different handout (total of 5 different handouts). 2. Instruct the student’s in their group, they will take turns sharing with their group members the content of their handout. Essentially, they will be teaching the others the Post-Secondary Options Pt. 2 GRADE 8 LESSON 13 content of their handout. They are each responsible for answering the questions at the bottom of their handout with help from their group members. 3. Give students approximately 25 minutes to work in their groups. 4. Then go around randomly to each of the groups and select a student to report out to the rest of the class the answers they wrote on their handout (with their groups help). With each group that you select make sure to select a student with a different handout. In other words, you will have all 5 handouts reported on but from different groups, not all from the same group. Discussion: 1. What did you learn new today about the benefits of different postsecondary options? 2. Did you learn something new today about one of the option? If so, what? 3. Did you learn any information today that might cause you to look differently at an option now or to consider one you had not considered before? 4. What stood out to you the most today about all these different options?
