TALK TO ME (Public Speaking, Part II)
GRADE 7 LESSON 23
Time Required: 30-45 minutes
Content Standards:
AA.S.7 Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and
interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect
self and others.
Indicators:
AA.PSD.7.7.08 Practice effective communication skills.
GOAL: Students will practice public speaking and communication skills.
Activity Statements:
Students will practice positive and respectful communication with peers. The students will use
non-verbal, written, and graphic communication to relay information about themselves and
then interpret the communication of other students.
Materials:
Handout 1 – Name Tags
Teacher Resource 1 – Respectful Communication
Card stock, oak tag or construction paper for name tags
Crayons or markers
Music (Optional)
Procedures:
1. Begin class by warming up with a Trust Walk. All except the leader place hands on
shoulders of the person in front. The Leader leads without giving any verbal cues. The line is led
by using body language and movement. Teacher may play music while group walks. When the
music stops, the students stop and change leaders. The Leader moves to the back of the line
and the next person becomes Leader.
2. The teacher follows instructions on Handout 1 – Name Tags to help students develop
their own personalized name tags.

3. As students are completing Name Tags, use Handout 2 – Respectful Communication to
lead a discussion about the same. Ask students to give examples of respectful
communication, respectful listening, etc. Explain that they will be sharing Name Tags
with classmates and discuss expectations for respectful communication.
4. When Name Tags are complete, the teacher collects them and gives to students at
random. Students will then take turns interpreting the information for the class.
Discussion:





What are the benefits of people treating each other with respect?
Agree or disagree: Courtesy and politeness are a lot of nonsense.
How do we demonstrate respect through our actions?
How do we demonstrate respect through our communication?
Give examples of both verbal and nonverbal communication that demonstrates respect.

Extension Activities:





Post the name tag glyphs for Back to School Night with the key for parents.
Create a birthday graph or chart for the class using the name tags.
Students may create their own Name Tag activity by further developing the pattern, using
additional embellishments, etc.
Students may take their Name Tags home to share with family members.
Other activities as assigned by advisor.
