Tell Me About It : Careers 1 GRADE 5 LESSON 22 Time Required: 30-45 minutes Content Standards: AA.S.1 Students will acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the lifespan. AA.S.5 Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals and know where and how to obtain information about the world of work and postsecondary training/ education. AA.S.9 Students will understand safety and survival skills and apply coping strategies. Indicators (Students will…): AA.A.5.1.08 AA.C.5.5.05 Develop effective communication skills. Develop awareness of the education and training needed to achieve career goals. GOAL: Students will begin researching careers in preparation for a career presentation to their peers. Activity Statements: Students will identify West Virginia Career Clusters. Students will practice effective communication within a small group setting. Students will select career clusters and at least one career to research. Students begin preparing for a “public speaking’ presentation on at least one career each. Project the 16 career clusters from http://careertech.k12.wv.us/. 2. Show students how to navigate the site to learn about career clusters, concentrations and jobs within each concentration. 3. Pass out Handout 1 - Career Clusters- Chart of Careers. 4. Break students into groups and have them use Handout 1 to share information about any of the careers they are familiar with. 5. Ask students to use either this handout, the CTE website, or one of the optional websites to select a career cluster to begin exploring and then a career of to begin researching. 6. Tell students clusters will be assigned on a first-come, first served basis so that that all career clusters will be investigated. 7. Tell students they will need to select a career in the career cluster they are not familiar with at this time. 8. Give students a copy of Handout 2: Outline for Career Research. Tell students they use this outline to investigate and become an “expert” on their selected career. 9. Assign advisory times in the next few sessions when each student will present on their career using proper public speaking skills. 10. The teacher may display the West Virginia Career Cluster page by data projector to follow links for further discussionhttp://careertech.k12.wv.us/ . Discussion: How did you feel about sharing Career Clusters within a small group? What strategies did you use to cope with stress if you were nervous about talking to a group? What are the Career Clusters identified in West Virginia? Were you already aware of Career Clusters? Can you name examples of careers for each Career Cluster? Do you have an idea yet as to which career cluster you are interested in pursuing? Are there any careers from the examples give with which you are not familiar? How can we learn more about careers that are available or may be available in the future?
