SENIOR PROJECT PREP GRADE 11 LESSON 25 Time Required: 30-45 minutes Content Standards: AA.S.1 Students will acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the lifespan. Indicators (Students will…): AA.A.11.1.03 Develop a plan for completing a research-based project. GOAL: Students will revisit Senior Project, narrow down topic and begin planning the research and possible product using a checklist. Activity Statements: Students will discuss the Senior Project, realizing that they will complete research on a topic of their choice, then create a research paper, prepare a portfolio and speech, and visual display about that topic. This project will be evaluated by a community/school panel who are utilizing rubrics given to the students in advance. Students will complete a personal checklist and planning timeline for completing the senior project. Materials: Handout 1 – Commitment Form Handout 2 -- Sample Topics Handout 3 -- Student Responsibilities Handout 4 – Student Activities Checklist (two copies needed per student) Handout 5 – Timeline Teacher should download the SREB Senior Project Guide from Web link below. Procedures: 1. Allow time for students to retrieve past information and handouts dealing with Senior Projects from their portfolios. 2. Review and discuss the information and handouts students have in their portfolios. 3. Distribute and review new information, Handouts 1 and 5. Have students complete Handout 1 to become familiar with each line item. Discuss Handout 5 Timeline in reference to next year their Senior Year and Handout 4 Checklist. Have students review their possible project choices (from Grade 10, Lesson 26, Handout 1). 5. Discuss possible project mentors. 6. Allow time for questions about the Senior Project. 7. Place handouts in portfolio for later reference. Give copies to students who want to take home. Discussion: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Why should you be thinking about your Senior Project topic now? Why is it important to learn how to write a research paper? Why is it important to be able to speak in public? How will these skills help you in the future? What topics are you considering? What research have you completed to determine if this topic will work for you? 6. Who will be your senior project advisor? Product mentor? (Discuss your school’s specific responses to the questions, senior English teacher?)
