INTRODUCING THE THREE-YEAR PLAN
GRADE 10 LESSON 9
Time Required: 30-45 minutes
Content Standards:
AA.S.5 Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals and
know where and how to obtain information about the world of
work and postsecondary training/education.

Develop educational plans to support career goals.
GOAL: Students will build upon the two-year Personalized Education Plan (PEP) by
completing a preliminary three year plan.
Activity Statements:
Students will begin the next stage of developing their five-year plan also known as the Individual Student
Transition Plan or ISTP. During this session advisors will introduce students to the WV CTE Programs of
Study website http://careertech.k12.wv.us/ and to the school’s PEP Process. Advisors may download the PEP
template from the handouts section or from your school websites.

Handout 1 – Outline for Career Presentation
Procedures:
 Advisors or the school counselor will take students into the computer lab to explore the WVDE
Programs of Study website http://careertech.k12.wv.us/ and www.cfwv.com to review interest
inventories, career matches, and courses needed for your top careers.
 Students will review school information on State CTE and Local Programs of Study and identify the
career cluster and Program of Study that matches careers goals.
 Students will review school materials to identify required courses and personalized electives for
their identified Program of Study.

 Advisors may place students considering the same cluster/Program of Study into groups to discuss
possible careers and possible course selection for the 11th and 12th grade year.
 Students will begin developing a draft copy of their three-year PEP using PEP Template included
with this lesson or the school form. Please check with counselor/LINKS coordinator to identify the
form students will use to complete the 3-year plan.
 Advisors will pass out Handout 1 – Outline for Career Presentation and assign students to give
presentations for the next LINKS session.
 Have students identify the careers they will present on next week to avoid duplicate and to give all
students a broader knowledge about career choices.
 Teachers will record each student’s career cluster and Program of Study on recording form and
share with the appropriate counselor.

What courses should you take while in high school to prepare?
Which career do you plan to research for your career presentation to be given over the next

Extension Activities:
 Ask students to go online at http://careertech.k12.wv.us/ to identify course requirements for WV CTE
Programs of student, to learn more about careers within each cluster, and to practice completing the PEP.
 Ask students to conduct their career research in their identified cluster this coming week and be ready for
their classroom presentations using the outline found in the handouts section.
Activity: Have students complete the Career Cluster Survey and then comment in their Journal
about the results (i.e. what did they learn, what careers within their top clusters were interesting)
Have students Browse the Career Clusters. Have them explore careers, programs of study and recommended plans
for each Cluster. When they find a cluster they like, have them add it to their Portfolio.

Students – Career Cruising Activity: Enter courses in Grade 11 and 12 sections of Education Plan and begin working
on Post-Secondary Plan in preparation for the ISTP meeting.
Advisors – Career Cruising Activity: For students to use the Portfolio to track their courses, it is highly recommended
that advisors populate the Education Plan with courses offered in advance.
