THE RISK INSTITUTE EXECUTIVE EDUCATION SERIES BALANCING RISK TO CREATE VALUE Session: May 15, 2014 ENABLING THE RIGHT RISK CULTURE: THE ROLE OF GOVERNANCE AND INCENTIVE COMPENSATION In the final session of the Risk Institute Executive Education Series, Fisher College of Business Professors Anil Makhija and Bernadette Minton discuss how to use lessons about the relations among governance, firm value, and risk taking to create a risk culture that allows organizations to engage in value-enhancing risk management practices. Fisher College of Business Senior Lecturer and Practitioner Expert, Robert Lane, will lead a panel discussion about the roles of corporate governance and the board of directors as value creators, and the extent to which governance can be enterprise-wide in nature. Panelists will include Don Shackleford, Chairman Emeritus of Fifth-Third Bank, Jerry Jurgensen, former CEO of Nationwide and current board member of AIG, and Bill Lhota, former executive of AEP and board member of various boards of publically traded companies. The Risk Institute Executive Education Series is an integrated approach to risk management. He specializes in corporate finance and issues related to capital structure, corporate governance and utilities. His work has appeared in major academic journals and he has won many prestigious teaching awards. Dr. Makhija received his PhD in finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bernadette Minton, Professor of Finance — Bernadette Minton leads curriculum development at the Risk Institute, and is the Academic Director for the Risk Institute Executive Education Series. As a co-director of the Fisher finance PhD program, Professor Minton works closely with future finance thought leaders. She teaches corporate risk management and corporate finance to Fisher undergraduate business students, and has taught related topics for Fisher’s executive education programs. Robert Lane, Senior Lecturer in Finance — Robert Lane joined Fisher College of Business Department of Finance as Faculty Coordinator for the Financial Services Cluster, as well as assisting in the inaugural Specialized Masters – Finance Program (SMF) in Autumn 2011. He brings an extensive background in financial services and consulting, and has taught at the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Professor Lane holds an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, an MA from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and a BA from Elon University. Most recently, he served as President of KeyBank, Central Ohio District, and he is also CEO of Lane Leadership Group, LLC providing executive coaching and professional development.
