Biographical Note
In 1940, Louis E. Ingelhart received his A.A. degree from Mesa State College in Grand Junction,
Colorado. Two years later he graduated from Colorado Northern University where he received his A.B.
in Literature and Languages. After serving in the Army during World War II, Ingelhart resumed his
studies and received his M.A. from Colorado Northern University in 1947. He earned his PhD at the
University of Missouri, School of Journalism, in 1953. He held numerous teaching positions throughout
the midwest, and began teaching at Ball State Teachers College in 1953. From 1973-1979 he was
appointed chairman of the Department of Journalism. Ingelhart was an active promoter of the First
Amendment's freedom of the press, and wrote many books and articles on the subject throughout his
career. After retiring in 1983, Ingelhart was named Professor Emeritus of Journalism as well as Director
Emeritus of Student Publications at Ball State University. He served as a member of several professional
journalism organizations. Louis Ingelhart passed away January 7, 2007.
Scope and Contents
The contents of the Louis E. Ingelhart collection include information concerning his career and academic
activities. Also contained within the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, publications, awards
received, photographs, and video cassettes. The correspondence files include letters to and from
colleagues and friends, as well as his letters to the editor submitted to various publications. The collection
contains material written by Ingelhart, both manuscripts and published works. Ingelhart received many
awards during during his extensive career as a journalism educator and first amendment rights advocate,
which are contained in the collection as well. The video files contain recorded interviews with Ingelhart,
his 55th class reunion, awards ceremonies, and Ingelhart family home videos. The photograph files
contain pictures of Ingelhart throughout the years. The photos range from his military service during
WWII to his presentation to the National Press Club.
