Administrative History
The History of Physical Education and Sports Filmstrips were produced c. 1970-1979 by Robert
A. McCall, Ph.D. and Richard H. Caldemeyer, Ph.D., both Ball State University professors, in
conjunction with Historical Filmstrips. The filmstrips were conceived as a teaching aid for use in
secondary and higher educational school settings.
Scope and Content
The collection contains filmstrips, cassette tapes, photographs, artwork, graphs, and maps of
sports and athletic activities from ancient to modern times which appear in the History of
Physical Education and Sports Filmstrips. Each illustration is numbered consecutively according
to its appearance in the filmstrips and guide booklet which may be found in Box 1. Each
filmstrip represents one period of time: the ancient and classical period (section I), the medieval
period (section II), the early modern period (section III), the early American period (section IV),
the later American period (section V), the twentieth century (section VI). Section numbers
(denoted by Roman numerals) appear at the top of each folder to the left of the folder title. Each
section is divided into five folders of ten illustrations each.
Box 1 contains two copies of the filmstrips set (each contains 6 filmstrips and 6 cassette tapes)
along with the container list, guide booklet, sales brochure, and title page proofs. Boxes 2 and 3
contain sections I-VI of the filmstrip illustrations. Box 4 contains all oversize illustrations. Box 3
holds approximately 9 folders (folders 16-24) which contain illustrations not used in the
filmstrips. Sections II- IV contain complete sets of illustrations. Section I is missing illustrations
number 1, 12-14, 17, 26-28, 30, 34, 51, and 52. Section V is missing illustration number 53 and
section VI is missing illustration numbers 7, 43, 45, and 49-51.
