Grants from the Foundation are made in four different programs: Civil Society,
Environment, Flint Area and Pathways Out of Poverty. Each of our four programs has
funding priorities that are detailed on this site.
As your initial contact with us, we recommend that you send a letter of inquiry. The letter
should describe the purpose and objectives of the project, general methodology and total
cost of the project.
A letter of inquiry enables the Foundation program staff to determine the relevance of the
proposed project to the Foundation's programs and to provide advice on whether to
submit a full proposal.
Alternatively, you may decide to begin your contact with the Mott Foundation with a full
proposal. If so, go to Step 5. (Please see exceptions for foreign organizations.)
We strongly discourage you from sending videotapes or audio tapes. Please send them as
a method of application only if the Foundation requests them. We cannot return tapes.
Your letter of inquiry should be clearly marked GRANT PROPOSAL and sent to:

What We Fund
Guided by the business philosophy and values of our Founders, the Packard Foundation
invests in and takes smart risks with innovative people and organizations to improve the
lives of children, enable creative pursuit of science, advance reproductive health, and
conserve and restore earth’s natural systems.
Core Grantmaking Programs
We focus the majority of our grantmaking in three program areas:
Our Conservation and Science Program seeks to protect and restore our oceans, coasts,
and atmosphere and to enable the creative pursuit of scientific research toward this goal.
Our Population Program seeks to slow the rate of growth of the world's population, to
expand reproductive health options among the world's poor, and to support reproductive
rights.
Our Children, Families, and Communities Program seeks to ensure opportunities for all
children to reach their potential.
Other Areas of Funding
In addition to our core grantmaking programs, our Foundation provides support in other
important areas:
3
Our Local Area Funds provide support to arts and community organizations which offer
important cultural and social services in local geographic areas of historical importance to
the Packard family.
Our Capacity-Building and Philanthropy Funds seek to strengthen the organizational
effectiveness of grantee organizations, provide program-related investments to further
program goals and objectives, and improve the practice of philanthropy.
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is a private foundation. We accept grant
proposals only for charitable, educational, or scientific purposes, primarily from taxexempt, charitable organizations. We do not provide funding for projects that benefit
specific individuals or that serve religious purposes.
Application instructions for each of our programs that accept letters of inquiry or
proposals are available at the links at left. Before preparing a letter of inquiry or grant
proposal, please carefully review the guidelines and geographic limitations for your area
of interest.

Green Building Initiative
Encouraging nonprofit organizations to consider building green
The Foundation’s Green Building Initiative, launched in 2003, is intended to increase the
awareness of sustainable or green building practices among nonprofits and encourage
them to consider building green. Upfront planning and an integrated design process are
necessary to achieve the full benefits of a green building. The Initiative offers educational
resources and special grants to help nonprofits during this planning phase.
The Initiative’s Planning Grant program encourages nonprofits working in the arts,
health, and human service areas to consider green for the first time. Grant guidelines in
this program encourage environmentally-focused organizations to innovate, creating new
models of sustainable design. Planning grants are available in amounts from $25,000 to
$100,000.
As of February 2006, The Kresge Foundation has awarded 64 planning grants totaling
$4,146,000 since the Initiative's launch.
4
The Initiative’s LEED Bonus Grant program for grantees in the Capital Challenge Grant
Program is closed with a total of $7,200,000 committed to 42 nonprofit organizations.
These organizations will receive bonus grants of $150,000 or $250,000 when their
projects became LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council
(http://www.usgbc.org).
The Foundation also makes available a series of educational materials designed
specifically for nonprofits, helping you understand the green approach and consider it
next time you build. Download the brochures at right.
In order to support in-depth learning about green building, The Kresge Foundation
also sponsored green building workshops designed for nonprofit organization executive
staff and volunteers interested in the subject.
Science Equipment Program
Equipping and endowing institutions for the long term
This program helps colleges, universities, teaching hospitals, medical schools, and
research institutions raise funds and awareness to support their instrumentation/laboratory
needs.
Half of each Kresge Science Initiative grant is applied toward the purchase of scientific
equipment. The other half supports an endowment restricted to the future maintenance
and replacement of the equipment. If awarded a Science Initiative grant, your challenge is
to raise the remaining funds to complete the endowment goal.
Replacing or adding equipment presents a significant development opportunity. As you
describe a need for equipment and the importance of providing funds to repair and
replace it, you can build relationships and help prospective donors understand the
importance of modern equipment in recruiting students and faculty and the quality of
research activities.
Pre-application Consultations
If you have general questions, we encourage you to contact a member of our Program
Staff . We make ourselves available on a daily basis to respond to inquiries about our
guidelines and policies.
If you wish to have a more formal consultation, we offer pre-application meetings or
conference calls for prospective applicants to the Capital Challenge Grant and the
Science Equipment Programs. These pre-arranged meetings/conference calls provide an
opportunity to discuss how best to time your application so that it is more likely to be
funded.
These consultations are not required, but many prospective applicants find them valuable.
If you wish to schedule a meeting or a conference call, please call our Appointment
Coordinator at least six to eight weeks before your desired date for an appointment. After
your consultation is scheduled, you will be asked to submit completed application forms
along with a brief description of your organization, project, and campaign plans to help
us prepare for the discussion.
5
We do not schedule more than one consultation in a 12-month period with an
organization. Also, we do not schedule consultation meetings or calls after a proposal is
submitted.

Protecting the Environment
Healthy communities have a high quality of life. The Frey Foundation believes that
managing growth and capitalizing on the natural environment contribute greatly to the
quality of life. For this reason we place a major emphasis on land protection. We
encourage environmental preservation and seek to maintain a balance between open land
and well-planned development in our target communities of western Michigan.
Our grantmaking priorities include:
 Preserving and restoring high-quality lakes and streams
 Expanding recreation trails and greenways
 Protecting and preserving critical lands - including farmland, parkland and natural
areas of rich biodiversity.
 Beautifying scenic transportation corridors, including gateways and the control of
billboards
