The School of Continuing Education is now the School of
Global and Professional Programs
During the Fall semester, our new Dean of the School of Continuing Education, Dr.
Lauren Mounty, met with various leadership committees to discuss strategic plans for
the school, receiving many good ideas and suggestions. One of the primary topics under discussion
was the term "Continuing Education" and whether
or not it continues to adequately reflect Marist's
mission and future vision for the school. A proposal to change the name to School of Global and
Professional Programs (GPP) was discussed with
the Academic Affairs Committee, Faculty Affairs
Committee, Integrative Major Committee, Dean's
Council, and President's Cabinet, and it was
agreed that this new name better promotes strategic goals for academic excellence, innovation,
professional development, and global reach. I am
pleased to announce that at its February 7 meeting, the Marist Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt School of Global and
Professional Programs as the new name of the school.

The School of Global and Professional Programs is introducing an optional winter international residency in
Rome, Italy in January 2010 as part of the on-line Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science offerings. This
exciting study-abroad opportunity held in conjunction with our branch campus in Florence, Italy, distinguishes
our adult programs by incorporating an international experience more common in traditional, non-adult
undergraduate programs.

David Violante is an OLC graduate and the Assistant Director of
EMS for the Arlington Fire District. He teaches EMS services
abroad in places such as Africa and says the OLC program
“Combined facets of education that would be incredibly useful
in everyday work: communication and organizational
leadership.”
David recently obtained his Masters in Public Health, which will
help increase his ability to educate those at home and abroad
about health and human services. “Marist and Columbia have
given me the tools that I need to be an effective leader in
everything that I do, whether it’s strategic planning at work,
system planning abroad, teaching in the classroom, or
conversing about local or global events. Challenges really are
opportunities and Marist has instilled that belief in me.”
SPRING 2009
Student Highlight
“I came to
Marist for my
bachelors
degree because
of its
reputation,
flexibility in
scheduling,
proximity, and
because the
OLC program
was a mix of
online and inclass learning.”
David Violante,
When asked how he managed to juggle the demands of work,
family, and school David states: “I’ve been married to my
wonderful wife Dorinda for 15 years and we have two children,
Antonio who is 9 and Angelina who is 8. Dorinda is finishing
school right now as well, and this has been made possible with
our crazy schedules by working together, getting help from
family, using technology in education and being able to stay up
late or get up early to study and do school work. Seeing the
benefits of education at work every day in all that we do is also a
great motivator. Our kids aren’t so sure yet, seeing us still doing homework as adults. It’s all possible though. At the end of the
day, making it through school, succeeding at work, and having fun in life has been possible because of the inspiration and help
from family, friends, teachers and colleagues, stopping to enjoy and experience life for what it is and musing on the inspiration
given by Gandhi, ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world.’”
