A LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR
School of Global & Professional Programs
A New Name for the Integrative
Major: Liberal Studies
The School of Global &
Professional Programs is
pleased to announce that a
name change in the major of
Integrative Studies to Liberal
Studies has been approved by
the State of New York. This
is a pivotal move that will
make the degree more
valuable for students and
more clearly speaks to the
nature of the degree and its
career outcomes. The Liberal
Studies major is a degree
completion program for adults
that allows an individual to
focus on specific
concentrations such as
criminal justice, psychology,
communications, economics
and more, while providing
flexibility and convenience
for a more mature student.
The degree can be completed
on campus or online and there
are also options for a business
minor which can lead into a
master's program. Please
contact our school for further
information at (845) 575-3202
and ask to speak with Donna
Tompkins, our Liberal Studies
advisor!

Weekend Paralegal Certificate Program
The Paralegal Certificate Program at
Marist is approved by the American
Bar Association and is offered to adult
students with 36 transferable college
credits. Students attend classes on
alternating weekends and can
begin the program in March or
September. It is a 12-month
program that is offered as a
cohort, which allows students
to work together in a
supportive environment. The
Paralegal Program provides
students with an opportunity
to learn the skills for a successful
career in a law office, corporate setting
or public agency and offers a
curriculum which combines legal
theory and practical application.
According to the
Department of Labor,
the field has seen huge
growth over the past
30 years and is
expected to continue
growing over the next
several years, much
faster than the average
of all other occupations.
The Weekend Paralegal Program is
offered at our Fishkill Executive
Center and is taught by Marist faculty
and practicing attorneys. We will be
starting our 49th cohort in Spring 2010.
For more information about the
program, please contact Donna
Tompkins at

CAAS Now Open to Adult Students in
Traditional Majors
Under the umbrella of Student Academic

Academic Services (CAAS) is an
academic support program designed to
provide a wide range of services for adult
undergraduate students, traditional
undergraduate students, faculty instructors
and administrative advisors. As of
November 2009, adult students in the
traditional majors have transitioned to
receiving their advisement with a faculty
advisor for spring 2010 registration. The
faculty advisors within the major

ADULT STUDENT
COMMENCEMENT
The 64th Annual
Commencement Ceremony
will take place the weekend of
May 21st and 22nd 2010. This
marks the 4th year Marist will
host 2 ceremonies. Friday,
May 21, 2010 is the Graduate
and Adult Student Ceremony
and Saturday, May 22, 2010 is
the Traditional Undergraduate
Student ceremony. A unique
feature of the Graduate and
Adult Ceremony is the time
honored tradition of PHT
honors. Since 1966, it has
been a Marist College tradition
for all adult students,
undergraduate and graduate, to
honor the one person who
exemplifies the commitment of
support, patience, and
encouragement during your
journey to degree completion.
It is an honor the college has
coined as “PHT” honors,
otherwise known as “Putting
Him/Her Through.” This can
be any one person in the
student’s life (e.g. family,
friends, coworkers, and
faculty) who has been part of
making the degree a reality.

Leadership Orange
On November 4, 2009, Toni
Constantino participated in a panel
discussion on higher education at
Leadership Orange’s Education
Conference at Orange-Ulster BOCES
in Goshen, NY. This event was
attended by approximately forty
individuals, including the
administration of the Leadership
Orange program, the current
Leadership Orange Class of 2010, as
well as a representative from SUNY
Orange. Toni presented on the topics
facing adult college students in
today’s economy, such as affording
college, financial assistance options,
and returning to school to improve
one’s marketable skills and career
prospects. The annual conference
covers an array of topics relevant to
all educational institutions, such as
the No Child Left Behind Act, public
school finance and accountability,
school safety, special education,
career and technical training, school
board membership, and postsecondary education. Toni herself is
a 2004 graduate of the Leadership
Orange program, which is dedicated
to the discovery and development of
community leaders in Orange
County, NY. She is a Program
Coordinator at the Marist Fishkill
Executive Center, where she

Honor Society - Alpha Sigma Lambda
Marist
College
has been a

since 1981
Since 1981, Marist College has
been a chartered chapter of the
Alpha Sigma Lambda National
Honor Society. This honor
society recognizes the
outstanding achievements of
adult students who accomplish
academic excellence while
balancing the multiple
responsibilities of home,
family, career, community and
education. Unique in its
concepts and creation, Alpha
Sigma Lambda goals are
unique as well. It strives to
provide stimulating momentum
to highly motivated adult
students of higher education
during their academic career.
In the winter of 1945-46, Dr.
Rollin B. Posey, Dean of the
University College of
Northwestern University,
realized that a measurement of
encouragement and recognition
accorded an evening student’s
scholastic achievement at an
early stage of his/her program
could provide the thrust of
desire to achieve his/her
educational objectives. Dr.
Posey founded a society, Alpha
Sigma Lambda, to honor those
dedicated adult students who,
while skillfully handling their
life responsibilities, achieve
and maintain high scholastic
standards. In 2009, Marist
College was honored to induct
79 adult students into the Alpha
Sigma Lambda National Honor
Society.
The 28th Induction Ceremony
of Alpha Sigma Lambda will
be held in early May 2010.

Marist Fishkill graduate
students do not limit
themselves to one or the

the option of combining onground and online classes to
have the best of both worlds.
Starting in August 2010,
Marist will offer an MBA for
Accountants that will fulfill
the requirements for licensure
as a Certified Public
Accountant. The first course
will take place on the
Poughkeepsie campus, with
subsequent courses taking

Bring a Friend to Class
The School of Global &
Professional Programs at the
Fishkill Executive Center
hosted a new initiative
entitled Bring a Friend to
Class Week. During the
weeks of November 30th
and December 7th, students
in the BA Psychology and
BS in Organizational
Leadership &
Communication programs
were invited to bring a
friend to class. Both guests
and students enjoyed the
opportunity to share
firsthand the experience of
these exciting programs.

Student Spotlight
Marist College student, Master
Sergeant Dion is currently in his
second Middle East deployment
within two years. This deployment,
however, won’t keep him from
completing his Bachelor’s degree in
2010. He has been working steadily
on completing this degree since the
Fall of 2004 when he joined Cohort
7 of the B.S. in Liberal Studies
degree completion program for IBM
employees at the Marist Fishkill
Center. He has completed a class
every ten weeks, with the exception
of last fall, when he was deployed as
part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in
Baghdad from September 2008
through January of 2009. During
this deployment, he’ll use whatever
free time he has to work on a three
credit Independent study, so that his
planned 2010 graduation won’t slip.
Master Sergeant Dion has been in
the National Guard for 23 years,
joining the Vermont Army National
Guard in September of 1986 and
graduating from High School in June
1987. After serving in both
Operation Desert Shield and Desert
Storm, he returned to Vermont and
became one of the “Green Mountain
Boys” of the Vermont Air National
Guard. After his transfer from IBM
Burlington to IBM East Fishkill in
April of 2002, he joined the New
